As CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER Turns 10, We Dip Into The Archives For Our Interview With Chris Evans

If you were ever curious about Chris Evans' views on signing up to star as Steve Rogers in Marvel's Captain America: The First Avenger just before the film came out, you’ve come to the right place.

This year marks the 10thanniversary of Captain America: The First Avenger, and to celebrate we’ve turned to the archives and pulled this audio interview with actor Chris Evans conducted just before the film was released.

As such, it’s an opportunity to get an assessment of how the actor viewed the character, how he anticipated his life would change, just how much he hated the idea of losing his anonymity as he began living life in the public spotlight, and his feelings on the “controversy” over the fact that he had previously played the Human Torch in a pair of Fantastic Four movies (which seems pretty silly in retrospect).

“I honestly look at the movies as I would any other movies,” he says, addressing the latter point. “I know they’re obviously Marvel and that they’re both superheroes with abilities, but I look at them just as characters. Just a person I’m portraying who has his own issues and his own character traits, and it doesn’t really hit any strange bells for me just because it’s under the same Marvel umbrella.”

On the fear of his life changing, he adds, “I think I was saying no at first because I was so scared. It’s daunting, it’s a lot of responsibility and it’s very life-changing in ways that I wasn’t sure I wanted my life to change. It just took a while to be comfortable with it. And then I said to myself, ‘You know, Chris, you can’t say no to this because you’re scared. That’s no way to live life and you just have to go for it.’”

Just rewatched this last week when I decided it was time to start a watch through of the MCU (Timeline order)...At the time his casting was announced I thought they were way off the mark...But it’s amazing how perfect for the role he turned out to be...To the point that I honestly couldn’t picture anybody else in the role...

One of the goats. It’s crazy to think that Chris almost didn’t take the role I’m sure someone else could’ve killed it but he was amazing. I watch his video talking about his anxiety when mines is sky high. Chris is a national treasure

The grenade scene alone made me fall in love with the character. Such a great portrayal.

@Vanillain - That and the scene where he says, "I don't want to kill anyone. I don't like bullies."

Boooyyyy, I was ready to go to war with this kid. He epitomized fighting for the right reasons.

@HydraB0b - I recently re-watched Cellular lol

Not in the slightest I would believe back then that this guy would one day shout "Avengers.. Assemble."

@kylo0607 - me neither. Especially after F4. I mean he wasn't bad as Johnny Storm, I actually think he captured the essence of that character. Just a bad movie...but I didn't think he'd go for the superhero genre after that. Glad he did.

I'm still wondering: was Evans/everyone else aware of the potential impact that Avengers and the MCU as a whole would even have? Besides the SDCC 2010 footage and how hyped that was, I honestly can't remember what the general feeling was like [back then].

Because, if anything, I was expecting Evans' hesitance in taking the role to simply be that of starring in another potential superhero dud. Nothing to do with the pressure of being Cap specifically... especially at that time.

The Best MCU trilogy and quite possibly the best comic book movie trilogy.

@marvel72 - I absolutely agree. Although I'd also say Avengers has a place at the top too. I can't help but look at them differently. As in, one revolves around a single character, the other revolves around the entire franchise and where are the characters are at in the overall story.

@Tonic24k - I didn't include The Avengers because it is basically 4 movies but you could class Infinity War and Endgame as one movie.

@marvel72 - I literally almost said the exact same thing about how IW and EG could be considered a two-parter. But yeah, all up there however we want to look at it.

Still one of the best MCU films. The earlier ones like this just seemed so much better in that there was no requirement to add stuff for the sake of it. They just told a story and began to set the stage for future stories to be told. Bliss 😊

Pretty good movie. Any doubts I had about Evans as Cap were gone after I saw it.
