CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD Star Anthony Mackie Teases Harrison Ford's Surprising Role As General Ross

Captain America: Brave New World will put Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson front and centre as the MCU's new Star Spangled Avenger. Unlike his predecessor, Steve Rogers, Sam has no superpowers, and we saw how much John Walker struggled before taking the Super Soldier Serum.

With The Leader and the Serpent Society set to take aim at Cap, Sam could find himself in serious trouble, especially if the rumours about General (and soon-to-be-President) "Thunderbolt" Ross transforming into Red Hulk are correct.

During a recent interview with Inverse, Mackie talked about acting opposite Harrison Ford and revealed new details about Sam and the General's dynamic.

"The first day was so intimidating," he recalls. "I was so f***ing nervous I couldn’t remember my lines. He’s Harrison f***ing Ford. There is this aura about him. But he dispels that really quickly because he’s such a cool guy. He’s everything a movie star should be. He would say, ‘Let’s shoot this piece of sh*t.’ And everybody was like, 'Yeah, let’s shoot this sh*t.'"

"We spent a good bit of time together. Ross and Cap have always had that relationship, where they were friends and they respected each other, but they always bumped heads," Mackie teased. "That’s their relationship in the storyline."

It's possible Ross and Wilson worked together when the latter was in the military, though we're a little surprised they're remotely friendly considering the fact The Falcon was among those who defied the Sokovia Accords by joining Steve's Secret Avengers.

As for what role Captain America will play in the wider Multiverse Saga, all Mackie would say is, "I’m still trying to figure out the Marvel-verse, or whatever. I don’t know. I don’t even know what the multiverse is. Dude, I have no idea what it is. I’m still trying to figure that sh*t out."

Captain America: Brave New World will be released in theaters on July 26, 2024.

@ShimmyShimmyYA - Harrison genuinely and quite literally meant, "let's shoot this piece of shit".

And he said the same at the beginning of principal photography for indy 5.

Harrison Ford is that rare guy who doesn't give a shit about some of the goofy material or lore he gets put into, but as soon as the check clears, he gives you a damn performance. What a pro

This could be so great or so terrible.

Will we get the MCU that excelled all the way through Infinity War/Endgame, or will get we get more preachy angsty crap like the tedious Disney+ show.

Make the new Captain America shine, not Shinola.

Mackie can be such a great Cap if they only let him.

"I hate when they make Captain America political."

Ooh that'd be a cool bit of backstory if Sam actually served under Ross at some point in his military career prior to meeting Steve, and that they actually have a sense of respect towards each other despite being on opposite sides of numerous issues since the Sokovia Accords

...so we're just gonna ignore how disrespectful this is to the legacy of William hurt?

What? Just applying their own logic for not recasting tchalla.

@Origame - The only thing you’re consistent for is having the absolute worst and nonsensical takes on this entire site.
Origame
Origame - 6/29/2023, 10:00 AM
@DTor91 - their stated reason for not recasting tchalla is to honor the legacy of Chadwick boseman, implying that recasting would've been disrespectful. So what about William hurt is worthy of being disrespected from that logic?

Even if you don't believe it's implying disrespect to recast, then why isn't William hurt worthy of honor when he tragically past away too?

And to make it clear, in a bubble this decision to recast is fine. It's standard Hollywood practice and the show must go on. But it should go both ways. If William is recanted, so should boseman. And if boseman isn't recast out of "respect", then so should william.

Now do you care to actually rebuttal my point or are you gonna just stick to ad hominem attacks.
AvalonX
AvalonX - 6/29/2023, 10:40 AM
@Origame - It was idiotic to not recast t-challa. You make a great point, William Hurt had a long storied career but he didnt make the first culture impacting black superhero movie ever.

Neither did Chadwick but they dont want to hear that.
Origame
Origame - 6/29/2023, 11:08 AM
@AvalonX - now I agree black panther has been over exaggerated in recent years (the disrespect blade has been getting is unreal). But black panther still had a huge impact culturally.

However, what we also ignore is that Chadwick specifically wanted this role to be like James bond for black people. It's undeniable he wanted the role recast. But apparently you can't honor someone's memory by doing what they wanted.

And then when William hurt dies, they just recast with no fuss. Wtf? So what is it? Is recasting disrespectful and you hate hurt? Or is it perfectly fine to recast but you decided to give boseman the finger?
AvalonX
AvalonX - 6/29/2023, 11:12 AM
@Origame - Right. Im not saying it had no cultural impact. Im just saying Blade did it first. You can argue it had a larger cultural impact because it pretty much started the superhero movies again after a long drought.
Slotherin
Slotherin - 6/29/2023, 12:28 PM
@Origame - casual moviegoers know Boseman as T'Challa... Hurt as Ross is a bit more if you followed the MCU.
Sucks to say but he didn't have the same impact.
Origame
Origame - 6/29/2023, 1:18 PM
@Slotherin - I think that's debatable. Ross was there at the very beginning year of the mcu. One of the first major antagonists of the franchise. And his improvised credits scene cemented the very concept that the mcu was all about. And his role in civil war led to the heroes being separated, which allowed infinity war and endgame to happen.

Not only that but hurt came into the franchise already a Hollywood legend.

Now I don't think saying this is fair to boseman. He wasn't alive nearly as long as hurt. However, it's also not fair to only honor the guy who died at the height of his popularity and ignore the Hollywood legend simply because the zoomers didn't know the legacy he had.

But that's what it comes down to. They didn't care about either of these actors. They cared about what could give their company the best look and let them sell the next movie better, integrity be damned.
Slotherin
Slotherin - 6/30/2023, 9:30 PM
@Origame - yes, Ross was there at the beginning of the MCU, but that leads to a reiteration of my point: casual moviegoers don't know that.
They know Boseman was T'Challa and celebrated it whether they knew he was already there in Civil War beforehand.
Origame
Origame - 6/30/2023, 9:36 PM
@Slotherin - well that's my point. Marvel doesn't give a crap about respect and honor like what they claim. They care about what would make the company look good and get them the most money. F@#$ what Chadwick and hurt actually wanted. All that matters is the bottom line to them.
Slotherin
Slotherin - 7/1/2023, 6:27 AM
@Origame - pretty much in line with my point.
They're concerned with how general audiences receive them. Which honestly makes a lot of sense even if it isn't my cup of tea.

My biggest issue isn't even Ross being recast, it's moreso how lazy they seem to be with it at the moment.
Could they not get Harrison to rock a stache?
Slotherin
Slotherin - 7/1/2023, 6:29 AM
@Origame - I will say the one thing Boseman has on Hurt is that Boseman so far is the only person to portray T'Challa live action.

Ross has been played by 2 different people, about to be 3.

Scared for this movie. Was soooo pumped for TFATWS show and then it ended up being such a disappointment and really not good at all. then they announced this movie with the same people from the show... then the leader, then the serpent society, then red hulk (possibly)... like, they are trying wayyyyy too hard with this movie and cramming too much into it. Go back and simplify shit, like with the BEST MCU movie, Cap TWS. I want this to be good but i just don't see it happening. Hope i'm wrong
