Captain America Super Bowl TV Spot Analysis

My reaction and commentary on the first footage from Captain America.

Overall, I was very impressed by this first trailer. They managed to fit a lot into 30 seconds. I felt like I got almost as much out of it as I would seeing a full trailer as the debut, which I think was very important for them to do seeing as this was the first footage shown of the movie and it was shown to such a huge audience. The action is looking great. It looked like we'll get a good mix of dramatic slow-motion and frantic fast pased sequences. The HYDRA soldiers don't look too advanced, which is good because they have the potential to make the movie campy and too unrealistic if done poorly. The visual style of the movie and the tone are both right about where I think they should be. In conclusion, I can't wait to see more of this in a full trailer!

I doubt the scene of Cap training is where he gets rejected, as a rejction would occur before he ever sets foor in boot camp.

I wrote a Cap script a while ago with a similar scene, and in it the training is meant to weed out those who don't have the heart to be super-soldiers. I think that's what's going on here.

I think they've made an excellent job of shrinking Chris Evans. Some area little dodgy, but a lot of those scenes are supposed to be brief so its ecxused if they're not quite perfect. The shot of Steve when hes' with Erskine is my favorite.

Nice vid, though. Glad to see a lot of people are getting into CA TFA.

I was really impressed with skinny steve - I think they really nailed it. If you compare this to skinny peter parker (sam raimi's) in spiderman 1 you can really see how CGI has come on.

There are some really nice touches with him as cap too - love the shot of him rolling up and whipping his shield in front of him as an armoured car explodes behind him. VERY captain america.

Joe Johnson has really got a handle on how to shoot Captain America to get maximum symbolic impact of the shield already - and that is just in a 30 second trailer.

Not hate'n on the teaser, because my reactions were on par with earzmundo, but I feel I have to remind folks that the trailer could look awesome, and the film could be crap. Case in point Independence Day. I will still be the first in line to see the flick, though. I am so ready for this movie.

@FrankGarret, That wasn't my initial thought, but I figured it was a possibility.
@Orphix, I thought skinny Peter Parker was just Tobey before training.
@bgharcourt, I know what you mean. I was so certain Terminator Salvation was going to be amazing. Ever since then, I've been more cautious in my optimism.

you should never ever take trailers as indication on weather the movies going to be great or bad, A lot of people were saying how cool the TF3 looked the trailer for TF2 looked pretty "cool" and we all know how that turned out. But cap teaser looked impressive it could have come off as really cheesy but It didn't and even the hydra goons didn't look that ridiculous and the fact that they had flame throwers instead of some advance unbelievable tech was good now people can stop worrying about the hydra goons

Thanks. I was kind of chuckling a lot now that you point it out, but I wasn't high. Just goofy.

Skinny Rogers was cool, are you freakin' kidding me?

My ONLY concern is that this film ends up looking too glossy, too squeaky clean and shiny. I like the gritty, dirty look of the outdoor scenes, but everything indoors looks a bit too CGI heavy. Like that scene where Cap walks in some large doors with the Howlers behind him, the background looks so fake ... a lot like the newest Indiana Jones movie, way too much CGI, not enough real environments and practical sets. Remember what made the original Star Wars great: Lucas insisted on a "used universe" where things looked worn in, used and grimy if necessary.

Other than that, I'm good to go.

@CapWriter, I agree about the artifical/over CGI look to some of the scenes, including the one you mentioned with him and the Howlers going in that door. The last indoor scene with the shield looked decent though, and as you said, the outdoor scenes have a great gritty and dirty look. I think skinny Steve looked good in the first shot and the one where he was crawling. The other ones looked like they needed a little bit of work still.

@capwriter - EXACTLY! I thought that it was a great teaser, but I also notice that it looked a little too clean in some scenes, especially when you look at some of the stills. I'm hoping that the overall look is a little more like "Saving Private Ryan" or "Band of Brothers". Pre-Cap Steve was nailed, period! My only real concern is that the suit looks too busy with the gray in it. That grey is just eatin at me for some reason. To me, it just doesn't have the military feel. If they were planning on adding another color, why not olive drab. That would have been a little more acceptable for me. As for Chris? I was a skeptic at first but damn. When I saw that first shot of Chris as Steve, it looked like the comic had come to life. It's too bad that he's got this Johnny Storm character hanging over his head because he is definitely Steve Rogers.

@hotkar - There was a story that was put out a few years ago that had Steve and a group of other canidates going thru a mini boot camp to measure their endurance.

@orphix - if you slow that scene down you can see that cap is actually catching his shield which tells me that it was thrown and it was on a return course.

As far as trailers being better than movies. I think we can agree that the greatest example would be The Phantom Menace trailer that had people sharding themselves while the movie was a major dissappointment.

Everyone who whined about him not throwing his shield, well, at least you see him catch it. I just hope they didn't reverse the footage to do that.
