WONDERCON: More From Chris Evans About Captain America & Comics

At WonderCon yesterday Chris Evans had some words to say about playing the legendary Steve Rogers.

Chris Evans seems to be the talk of San Fransisco's WonderCon. During a press conference for The Losers he actually talked a little about the role of Steve Rogers.

"I think Marvel is doing a lot of good things right now. It's a fun character. Even if it wasn't a comic book. I think the story of Steve Rogers is great. He's a great guy. Even if it was just a script about anybody, I'd probably want to do it.

"He's a great character to play. He just happens to be a comic-book hero, too, and that's where I'm coming from."

He also went on to talk a about the fact that this will be his fifth comic book movie.

"I don't have a history or love of reading them. I didn't grow up reading them, but they're fantastic for film."

"It's an intangible thing," he said. "You have all of these different creative people come together trying to make something. The director is the quarterback trying to bridge the gap of all these different artists together with words. A lot of the times, the message can be lost in translation.

"The beautiful thing about comic books or even movies based on novels, you have a blueprint, you have something tangible thing where you can go, 'This is the world we're going for.' Especially in comic books you have a color palette, you have a visual home base to root yourself in. As an actor it's nice knowing at least the people behind the visual element to the film have this nice blueprint to work off. As an actor you have something to go off of too. It's a treat! It's always nice working on a comic book (film) because you know what you're getting into beforehand.".

Awesome find HAWKS! :)

I really hope people arent going to start saying he's wrong for the role just because he didnt read the comic books when he was younger...just look at the amazing job he did with Johnny Storm! I have complete faith that Chris Evans will end up being the best choice possible that they could have made for Captain America!

Randy Orton For Captain America. He's one million times better than Chris "Plays a Douche too well" Evans.

And he really is a proud American. Chris is just another one-sided actor. He's gonna suck, which is gonna make the movie suck and we're going to hang our heads in shame every time we hear the film mentioned the same way we do when we hear about the older Cap America movies.

A wrestler as Cap is bad on so many levels! The acting is the obvious point but even if you find a wrestler who can act he will be too big! Cap is the peak of human conditioning, that doesn't mean brute strength and size. Cap is fast and agile, a true athlete, not a muscle bound lump of a man!

Also, Evans CAN act, just watch Sunshine! He steals the show from Cillian Murphy for christ sakes!

@ r0r5ch4ch84

lol...wrestlers. are you joking? i don't get why people insist on saying that wrestlers would be good casting choices for comic characters...or ANYONE really. name one good movie that had a professional wrestler as the star. lol. you can't do it, you know why?? because it doesn't exist. and to call Evans a "one-sided" actor just puts you in the same category with the other ignorant people that say Evans only plays good comedy/smart ass characters. go watch some of his movies where he plays serious roles. then make comments...hahahahaHAHAHAHAHAHA...Randy Orton...

i think hes just trying to keep himself from looking like a CBM junky... he doesnt wanna be looked at as just a comic book actor thats why i think hes putting emphasis on the story of the character outside of his CB ties.

Face it people...he's got the part. Live with it. As CDB said, for those that keep saying he is a one dimensional actor shows that you don't have a friggin' clue about what you are talking about. Watch more of his films and then come back and try to tell us that.

I kind of find it refreshing that an actor is honest and doesn't go down the typical, "I'm a big comic book buff! I've been reading them forever and blah...blah. He's an actor. He likes playing comic book roles and is right for the role, so that is all that matters. If they were to only cast characters in CBM's that loved reading comic books of the characters they are to play while they were growing up, they wouldn't have much to pick from.

Andre the Giant for Cap

YES! Okay, now I'm getting excited for Evans as Cap!

I've said it before and I'll say it again....what separated Christian Bale from the other men who have played Batman is that Christian Bale played Bruce Wayne first. CB seemed to relish in showing how Bruce's dark, obsessive, single-minded, barely this side of psychotic, psychological make-up is the real story behind Batman. The fact that Evans talks about how Steve Rogers would be a great character with or without Cap speaks volumes to me. After all, Rogers is the one with the ideals, the determination to serve and to be the best. Without Rogers, CA is....USAgent(?)

I'm rambling now, but I'm warming to Evans as Cap. Even if I still want to see Mark Valley as the 're-animated' Cap!

@CDB: Princess Bride is awesome and had Andre the Giant in it, but I agree. That's just dumb. The fact is that we don't know what Evans or Johnston will do with the role, but the inclusion of Bucky and input from Marvel speak volumes as to how authentic they'll make the movie.

@telavizion: Get over it!

BubbaDude - 4/4/2010, 2:48 PM
Saying that Evans can never do any other comic role other than Johnny Storm is like saying John Wayne could never do another western after "Stagecoach".....gimme a break. This is a new genre(maybe a dominant one?), like the western was from the 30's through the 60's. We should be proud and happy about that. We should also expect that some actors will be in numerous genre films. It's called suspension of disbelief. I shouldn't have to explain that concept to comic fans...right?

I think the only films I've seen Evans in are the FF flics. However, I have faith that he can be a good Cap.

I really hope two things happen in this film. It's a stretch, but I'd love to see The Invaders in this film, even if it's only a moment. And I want to see Cap fight the original Human Torch.

I think some of the actors in wrestling aren't bad, The Rock is obviously the best actor out ones I've watched, and I used to watch WCW and WWF/WWE when I was young up to about high school, then I stopped. Anyway, Walking Tall is good, The Rundown is good, and most people like The Game Plan (it's a family film). I liked Stone Cold Steve Austin in that Condemned movie. They fit their characters well. Doesn't mean they are Johnny Depp or Daniel Day Lewis here. Give em a break, they are actors, and better than Tatum lol. What I don't get is if you actually watch Triple H in WWE, he doesn't suck at saying his lines or anything, but then you watch Blade 3 and you're like "Hunter, wtf" lol.
