iPad and Kindle owners now have the advantage of getting their comics exclusively on Apple's iBookstore, the Kindle Store, and Nook store. This is a great way to get, and enjoy your favorite DC comics quicker than ever! DC previously only offered certain graphic novels for digital downloads. Seems like that's a thing of the past! Hopefully Marvel Comics will do the same soon!

DC Entertainment, the #1 comic book publisher in the U.S., announced today its entire line of periodical comic books are now available for download from the top three e-bookstores including Kindle Store, iBookstore and NOOK Store™. The precedent setting new digital availability brings bestselling DC Comics and Vertigo periodical titles, including JUSTICE LEAGUE, BATMAN, SUPERMAN, DETECTIVE COMICS, ACTION COMICS, BATGIRL, WONDER WOMAN, GREEN LANTERN, FABLES and AMERICAN VAMPIRE, among many others, to an even broader audience of digital readers.

“As e-readers and tablets continue to explode in popularity it’s important for us to offer consumers convenience and choice in how they download digital comics and graphic novels and these new distribution deals with the top three e-bookstores do just that,” said Jim Lee, co-publisher, DC Entertainment. “We’re very excited to work with Amazon, Apple and Barnes & Noble to bring bestselling DC Comics and Vertigo periodicals to their e-bookstores.”

Marvel comics are useless, they have been poor for some years not bought a marvel title since civil war. Dc are just light years ahead in comics and animation maybe not movies though lol

In terms of reading comics faster, then yes that's a great idea. But do you actually own the comic?

Can you pass the comic on to your kids? Is it downloaded onto your computer and then yours forever?

Will this decrease the value of real comics or increase it?

Death of the comic book store?

Just curious! :-)

Sorry, I still prefer to actually have in my hands a hard copy comic book. It's part of the experience and fun of reading comics.

I prefer to buy real comics instead of digital. Digital's more convenient, easier to store and they're easier to find, but there's just something about turning pages and the satisfaction of knowing that the book belongs to you.

I think what Marvel have been doing for a while is a good idea though, offering a free digital copy of any real comic you buy; that way, you really get the best of both worlds.

fantastic! really looking for an alternative for comixology where you can keep an actual file that you purchase. here's hoping that other publishers do the same.

I'm confused as to why this is news... you can already get all their comics through Comixology. I've been reading my comics on a tablet only for over a year now.

@ HappyHouston11

if you haven't read anything marvel since civil war you're missing some great titles, both companies have very good comics recent titles listed below.

dc new 52

-animal man
-aquaman
-batman
-green lantern
-swamp thing
-the flash(some issues not all)
-wonder woman

marvel

-daredevil
-uncanny x-force
-venom
-fantastic four
-ff
-journey into mystery
-winter soldier
-captain america

i wouldn't say dc were light years ahead, marvel now looks like its gonna have some good titles as well.

Uh... where have you guys been for the past year? You've been able to get ALL of the New 52 lineup from ComiXology same day as release. ComiXology works from a browser or any Android/iOS device. Marvel has been doing this for all of their new titles too.

@ddrussianinja: thank you! I was going crazy thinking I was the only one...

I like holding a comic book in my hands, too, but when you pick up 40-50 books each month, you run out of room to store them pretty quickly.

I much prefer the Marvel and DC apps rather than the iBooks version. The apps zoom in for each frame, I books requires you to zoom in to read it on your iPhone. Maybe this would be better on an iPad? The only thing the iBooks version has is the neat-o page turning effect.

@ddrussianinja and @malschla
i think the big difference between dc offering their single issues on kindle, nook, and apple's iBookstore and supplying them on comixology is that you don't actually purchase a file from comixology that you can keep. with nook, kindle, and iBookstore, when you purchase a book, it is a an actual file that you have on your computer (at least i do) that you can keep. if comixology goes under tomorrow, your collect can be gone (which they talk about in their fine print). With that in mind, this is huge. graphic novels have been for sale for a bit in these digital stores, but not a lot of single new issues. only problem is the iBooks comic book reader sucks something fierce.

I have been reading comics on my iPad since I got it. It's fantastic really. I like the "movie mode" alot where it goes frame by frame by you so you're not tempted to cheat and look ahead. The picture is beautiful.
Actually in some comics like AvsX they actually add extra stuff that isn't in the physical book that I'm not sure everyone knows about.
Someone earlier brought up a point that I do think about. The local comic book store could suffer a whole lot and end up going away do to this. Everyone goes digital. People will still buy the physical stuff because there is nothing like but less and less. I know people that share the same "digital account" and everyone buys a couple each month so everyone can read them all. Plus piracy, I hate that stuff when it comes to comics.
Anyway, digital is coming and staying. Physical will always be but hanging out at the local comic store might be over soon. Ahhh progress. Done

There is NO collectability in digital comics.

I think it's okay for a fraction of the cost (lets say $1); however, when they are being sold for the same price as their print counterpart; digital comics can take a dive off a rocky cliff.

One of the worst things the industry did was make comics so expensive that kids were unable to buy them. When I first started collecting, comics were made from newspaper paper, and they cost about 75cents. They edged up to $1, and stayed there for years. They were intended for kids, and they cost slightly more than a candybar (50cents) at a convenience store. Once the industry started using better paper, the comic-book prices started to soar. Now, comics are $2.99-3.99, WTF?!?

I think digital comics can make comics affordable for children again. However, Because of the endless greed of the industry, they want to charge people the same price for print or digital.

The thing is when you buy comics, you might end up with a few key issues that you can later sale for a pretty penny. How are you going to do that with digital?

[frick] hard copies. they lie around in heaps and bundles for years making a mess, only to be sold for dirt cheap prices years later

thank [frick] for this. where i live, i'm having a hard time getting my hands on any comic book. this should help greatly.

Marvel and Dc have apps that do just that..you can buy civil war for like 9bucks. They also do marvel mondays which have sale price issues for 99c or 69p in the uk.
The data base is a great idea though

The "resell these later" argument doesn't really apply anymore.

It's gotta REALLY be special for it to be worth it later. Comics get printed in large quantities, so getting that value to go up is rare.

@ellispart3: What are you talking about? I use Comixology for all of my comics and they are all downloaded (if I choose) to my Kindle Fire. If Comixology goes under, those comics will remain there.
