BATMAN '89 #1 Preview: The Original Dark Knight's Story Continues With a First Look At Two-Face And Robin

Michael Keaton will reprise the role of Batman in The Flash, but the upcoming Batman '89 comic promises to continue this Dark Knight's story following the events of Batman Returns. Here's a preview...

The Flash looks set to pick up with Michael Keaton's Batman decades after we last saw him leap into action to protect Gotham City. However, DC Comics' Batman '89 promises to continue his post-Batman Returns story courtesy of Sam Hamm (who co-wrote those original two movies) and artist Joe Quinones.

Throughout the course of the six-issue series (which kicks off on August 10), we'll pick up with the Caped Crusader, the version of Catwoman played by Michelle Pfeiffer, Billy Dee Williams' Harvey Dent as he transforms into Two-Face, and even the debut of a brand new Robin.

We have no idea whether this will be canon or if the events of the comic book are going to be acknowledged in The Flash in any way, but it's definitely exciting for fans (DC Comics previously revealed that the series "will pull on a number of threads left dangling by the prolific director [Tim Burton]").

"Gotham City is being torn in two as citizens dressed as Batman and The Joker duke it out in the streets!" reads on official description for the series (that will be the equivalent of three full-length comics. "As D.A. Harvey Dent tries to keep the city together, he targets the one problem tearing it apart: Batman! And he'll get Bruce Wayne's help in taking down the Dark Knight!"

Check out some interior artwork below along with a first look at Robin suited up:

I never really cared for Burtons Batman. Thinks that’s mainly just because I never care much Burtons work in general, but I am tempted to pick this up just to see this universes take on different characters

It is weird seeing this Batman move so freely, when in the movies he was quite slow and stiff

@Knightrider -
Agreed, felt that was a highlight of those films. Made Batman seem like one of those slasher movie villains where whatever you did he just kept coming, he was an inevitability. The fact he was moving slower and stiffly yet criminals were still afraid of him helped the idea that they knew they could not really escape him no matter how hard they tried he'd find them.

I can still remember seeing Batman at the cinema and I was just blown away. I grew up on comics and Adam West so seeing this was just mind blowing. Gonna check these out.

@MarvelousMarty - I saw it at home but it was real low quality, filmed in a chinese theater. Was still blown away.

Like the two face look. Don't like the robin look though. The hood just makes it too modern. Wish they had kept the design more in line with the concept art.

I like that they went with the original chest plate/ musculata instead of the Returns segmented mechanical looking costume design.

Love the Frank Miller homage ("All this and brains too") and the giant penny too. I wonder if this will be the official new history for the Burtonverse and a prequel of sorts to next year's Flash movie.
Can't wait to see Damon Wayans Robin. I wonder if he's Dick, Jason or someone else.

@dragon316 - So, may I ask, what do you like?

This just seems like a standard Batman comic with some Batman 89 skins. Nothing really sticks out as it being the Burton-verse.

@FoiledCranium - To add, I don't think Robin's design screams Burton-verse either. Robin's design is needlessly strange. Even if Robin isn't operating under Batman yet.

If I took that Robin design on it's own, and somebody tried to tell me this is how Robin would look in Tim Burton's Batman universe, I'd ask them to try again.

Robin design looks interesting. But these first pages are not really pulling me in.
For those interested in what-could've-beens of Burton's Batmanverse, I recommend these fanscription videos.

They all so have this fun idea of what Batman 89 would've looked like if Harley Quinn had already existed in comics and Burton would've used her in some capacity in the first Batman movie.

This looks pretty sweet. Also one correction...those joker thugs aren’t looting, they’re “peaceful protesting”.

@HulkisHorny - ah yes, an article on a comic follow up to a 30 year old movie. THIS is where I let them know my take on the affairs of the world from the last year 😂👌

I wish Quinones took more influence from Bob Ringwood's original concept art for Robin.

Other than that, I'm super excited for this!

Riddler and Mxyzpitlik in the superman comic should be based on Robin Williams

Looks solid enough. Hopefully Batman gets more character here.
