DC Comics Announces DC FUTURE STATE Two-Month Event Giving Glimpse Into DC Universe's Future

DC Comics was once planning a 5G reboot focusing on legacy heroes, but that's being turned into a special two-month event dubbed DC Future State, with a glimpse into a possible future for the DC Universe!

DC scrapped plans for a 5G reboot which was set to shift the publisher's focus to a future DC Universe with new heroes taking over familiar mantles, but fans will get an idea of what that would have looked like with a two-month, line-wide event this January. DC Future State will feature a combination of monthly and twice-monthly oversize anthologies, as well as a monthly schedule of miniseries and one-shots.

DC Future State is going to spotlight the DC Universe's heroes in fresh new roles, with all-new characters taking up their iconic mantles. Award-winning writers and artists with new voices from the worlds of TV, movies and animation will assemble for this event, and in March 2021, the regular DC title lineup resumes, continuing existing story lines from 2020 and introducing new arcs for the year.

However, it seems likely that the characters and titles that resonate with fans - and do big numbers in terms of sales - could return in future limited series or ongoing titles.

"The DC Universe has always been fertile ground for new and refreshing takes on our characters, and DC Future State definitely contributes to this legacy," said DC Executive Editor Marie Javins. "When the event begins in January, some savvy readers will not only pick up on some of the breadcrumbs that have already been tossed out in our current titles, but they will also find new hints and clues of what’s to come in 2021."

Anyway, as a massive Dc Comics fan, this event is a huge thumbs up for me. Sure, it is a 5G and Futures End Mash-up, but it is still pretty interesting.

We haven't had titles with Black Adam, Mister Miracle and Midnighter for ages.

Also the new ''future'' designs are neat.

@DARKSIDEIS - It all looks so good.

The Asian Batman is apparently the detective introduced in Detective Comics #1027, btw (same writer, Mariko Tamaki).

@OmegaBlack13 - Bruce is supposed to be dead according to The Next Batman synopsis (he's probably not, though).

@zeon00 - That would be Asian BatGIRL.
(Even though by now her and Spoiler should be Batwomen, but whatevs)

@GwenLantern - The Dark Detective solicits say he's the star of the book though

Kinda curious but i'm glad it wont be canon or anything.

Still...I wanted to see a whole ass journey for lil Jon and then becoming Superman one day, even in an event like this but f*cking Bendis truly ruined every single moment for me.
I wanted something like Kratos/Atreus "We must be better" but instead he's all aged up and kissing Saturn Girl.
F*ck this shit.

@Doomsday8888 - What are you talking about? I don't ever recall Bendis touching Superman or 1/2 of the Supersons? I'm glad that after Tomasis' Supersons we got to see their story continue in DCeased, an odd choice for sure for DC to continue the Supersons in that book, but it makes up for his absence in mainline DC.

lel, pretty based! :3

I feel you, fam.
And yeah, Taylor's been doing pretty good with Jon in DCeased!

@AbidNaga - that's not a bad way of looking at it. Dcceased> the main canon of Bendis and King's indulgences
AbidNaga
AbidNaga - 10/15/2020, 12:24 PM
@FishyZombie - It's really weird man. Bendiss run on Superman/Action & Kings run on Batman were/are imo just.... agh.

But give Bendis a Batman mini and King a Superman mini (and please only give King minis, he knocks it out of the park with those [not considering HiC] and it feels like he just sort of collapses with longer runs based on Batman) and they both give out some of the better books of the year. Like, the proof is right there, just do that! :(

@AbidNaga - I think all the negative reactions to Batman #50 thre King off his game.

It's all good up until then, but an arc or two afterwards, you can see he's off his game.

I guess that's the pitfalls of doing a real-time monthly instead of a mini. Like you say, he should stick to limited runs and minis.

So is this the "rebrand" for 5g? Either way the covers look cool and the creative teams on the book sound solid even if though this is just a little temporary line before going back. If it weren't for Hickman throwing a ton of X-Books out there, my pull would probably have more variety lmao

The covers don't really give too much away. I'm assuming this is the new black Batman that the writer of 12 Years of a Slave said he is writing.

UXASIS
UXASIS - 10/15/2020, 12:15 PM
@blackandyellow - It will probably be Luke Fox, and this is his design.

blackandyellow
blackandyellow - 10/15/2020, 12:23 PM
@DARKSIDEIS - I can't even begin to explain to you how much it bothers me that you have "Darkseid" spelled wrong in your name.
dracula
dracula - 10/15/2020, 12:47 PM
@blackandyellow - Will or sure check it out, although really just got to ask, in relation to Dan Dinio's original plan to actually make it a long lasting thing. A black Batman is okay, would still rather have Bruce Wayne, but a black batman is fine, but why Luke Fox, he is Batwing, there is nothing wrong with Batwing, the new 52 comic lasted a good amount of time. Switching his hero name doesn't really change the character so why not just revive the BAtwing comic
GwenLantern
GwenLantern - 10/15/2020, 1:21 PM
@DARKSIDEIS - Either Luke or Tim.

Can't wait for this book. This is the one I'm really looking forward to. John Ridley's a really good writer.

Gonna be a mega-hit, these two issues.

@blackandyellow - Man, of course I tried DarkseidIs as my nickname!!!
But somebody already took it, so I changed it a bit (funny thing is...the pronounciation is still the same :D )

Bit of an All-New All-Different vibe to the promo material, but not in a bad way. I was interested in seeing what they would do with 5G (the idea of tying comic continuity to a real world calendar has always been interesting to me). This may not have the real-world timeline gimmick, but it might still have some fun stuff.

Reeds2Much - 10/15/2020, 12:18 PM
@Spock0Clock - The gimmick of putting a real time table to comics needs to be done more often. Spider-Man: Life Story kind of did it pretty well, and seeing other characters getting that treatment would empty my wallet; Especially if it were Batman.
Franshu
Franshu - 10/15/2020, 8:29 PM
@Reeds2Much - As a mini, sure. But in main continuity, I don't think it'd do very well on sales.
GwenLantern
GwenLantern - 10/16/2020, 1:37 AM
@Franshu - Strange thing is, we call it a gimmick these days and wonder if it would be a good idea to do, sales-wise, but it never used to be a gimmick. It was used to just be the natural order of things.

Every Marvel comic up until the'80s was in real time. Then the characters seemed to stop aging or start aging really slowly (using the 'sliding time-scale' device).

And technically, every canon DC comic has been real time from the beginning.
They just reboot so often that their characters are always young.

Even old cartoon characters aged in real time until the 50s.

I think the real gimmick is that there IS no real time aging process.

It's cool that they're bringing Red X into the main DC universe.
