This July, DC Comics will revisit the world of Richard Donner's Superman: The Movie and Tim Burton's Batman. Writer Rob Venditti is teaming with artist Wilfredo Torres for Superman '78, while screenwriter Sam Hamm and artist Joe Quinones are delving into Batman '89

The latter promises to pull on a number of threads left dangling by the prolific director. It's said that, "Hamm and Quinones will help usher in the return of Selina Kyle/Catwoman and will debut a new Robin! Plus, Quinones has a vision for Harvey Dent/Two-Face that is as close to movie magic as a comic can get!"

So, despite the title, this is clearly set to serve as a Batman Returns sequel.

As for the Superman series, "bystanders are surprised and delighted by Superman’s abilities, and Lois Lane doesn’t (yet!) know that Clark Kent is secretly Superman. The sheer thrill of seeing a man fly, leap, or stop a bullet will be reflected in this environment where Superman has just been introduced! Inspired by Donner’s classic, timeless style of superhero storytelling, in Superman ’78 Venditti and Torres will show fans that a man can truly fly."

DC Comics has confirmed that Batman '89 and Superman '78 will six digital chapters of each new series on July 27, followed by new chapters of each comic book for the six weeks that immediately follow. The twelve chapters of each new series will also publish as six printed comics between August and October and as hardcover collections in October.

I may have to dig, but I think I still have a copy of the official DC adaptation of Batman (they didn't have to call it Batman 89 back then) with art by Jerry Ordway.

@RolandD - I know I used to have it when I was a small kid. Wish I still did.

@RolandD - I also had the official movie adaptation for the original TMNT. That one was actually really good.

@RolandD - I still have mine, the hype for that movie back in 89 was phenomenal.

Batman T-Shirts everywhere.

@marvel72 - Had a lot of Batman stuff as a kid, but 89 was when I had my first Batman shirt. Black with the classic yellow oval and bat. Friend of mine (and mind you, we're grown adults at the time, at least in body) were always saying to each other, "What are you?" "I'm Batman."

Based on the picture of Superman above, they may not have license to use the actors' likenesses like they did in this one.

They realize they have other characters right? Like they bought all the Fawcett, Charlton, Quality and Wildstorm characters. A lot of great characters and like 90% of all I see is more Bats and more Supes.

@TheUnworthyThor - Uh, I don't know. I'm still waiting to see a return of Supes in the cinema, you know, his own movie again.

Now obviously Two Face will be based on Billie Dee Williams, but will Robin be based on Marlon Waynes, and will Riddler be based on Robin Williams.

Hopefully they keep the Tim Burton style for the new designs

Now hopefully Superman 78 ignores Superman 3 and 4, but which Superman 2 will they use in continuity, the Donner cut or the Lester cut
