DC Comics Announces Sweeping Changes To SUPERMAN Titles As Jonathan Kent Becomes The New Man Of Steel

DC Comics has announced some sweeping changes to the Superman line of titles, and many fans could be upset by the news.

The "Future State" event was initially planned as a full-blown reboot of the DC Universe, moving into a future where key characters had been replaced by legacy heroes (similar to The Falcon becoming Captain America and Ironheart taking over from Tony Stark).

That's no longer the plan, but at least a few of those changes will still go ahead. Among them is a brand new Man of Steel starting July 13th when Superman: Son of Kal-El replaces the current Superman monthly title. Written by Tom Taylor (Suicide Squad) with art by John Timms (Harley Quinn), the spotlight will be put on Jonathan Kent as he suits up as the DC Universe's new Superman.

"As Clark Kent continues his fight to liberate Warworld, both on the front lines and with a new team of covert operatives, the new series will follow the son of Superman as he begins his next chapter," explains The Hollywood Reporter. "Jonathan Kent is well suited for the task of wearing his father's cape, having fought evil with Robin (Damian Wayne), traveled across galaxies with his Kryptonian grandfather, and lived in the future with the Legion of Super-Heroes." 

Clark Kent, meanwhile, will also have a very different status quo moving forward. In a new four-part series, Superman And The Authority, from Grant Morrison (The Green Lantern) and Mikel Janín (Batman), the Man of Steel will be part of a new team led by Manchester Black, and combine original members Midnighter and Apollo with new members Enchantress and Natasha Irons, as well as new versions of Lightray and O.M.A.C.

These changes to Superman's world are seemingly here to stay, and it's certainly going to be interesting to follow Jonathan Kent's attempts to live up to his father's legacy as the Earth's new protector.

@TheInvincible - I agree. Maybe it's just my own creativity making the concept seem cool, or maybe watching Superman and Lois has opened me up a bit, but this sounds interesting to me.

@roxas1003 - Yeah same. I really liked the Clark Jon dynamic with Jon being a kid, or even the Jon/Damien dynamic in Supersons. But this is his own title so I'm interested to see how it goes with an aged up Jon since we haven't really gotten that yet.

@AbidNaga - I would’ve liked to see Jon age up naturally with Damien before this title would come out. Not a fan of Bendis making him 17 but we will see

Not sure how this will pan out, but I always try to be supportive when they change the status quo in comics, clark kent has existed for 80+ years, his son replacing him will be a good way to spice things up, even if just a little.

TOM TAYLOR IS DOING THIS AND I CANNOT BE MORE HAPPY LMAO. Seriously though, the love he has for Supersons and Jon Kent shines through DCeased so I'm genuinely excited for this.

Honestly, I don't hate it. Gotta do something to stay fresh...but they probably shoulda just kept Supes as a Dad for longer. That was interesting as Superman and Lois is proving...

It's not a bad idea. Although I rather have Conner Kent be Superman first and Jonathan Kent staying Superboy for a while longer before becoming Superman.

Not so sure about the art though. Could use a little more classic look in my opinion.

Though this certainly has the potential to be an enjoyable run, it sounds about as permanent as the Azrael Batman.

Absolutely love Jon, but they need a better artist to go with Tom's writing....still gonna ck this out .

Oh and having Kal with Apollo is EXTTEMELY OVERPOWERED !

I read a few Superman comics as Bendis was writing it but I couldn’t finish it. Not a fan at how he handled the character but I’m curious about this upcoming series.

The Future State books weren't great in the Superman corner. I would love to see the Wonder woman and Aquaman arcs continue. Yara and Jackson are great

remember when writers came up with new stories for long standing characters instead of replacing the characters and the running them through the same drama as the originals? I am not saying that these artists and writers are not talented because at the end of the day they are doing what they are told. It is just a way of getting sales using existing titles (sometimes with slight modifications) when using a new title wouldn’t generate much sales. It’s a very worn gimmick (52/Jane Foster Thor/Falcon-Bucky-Cap).

@ShimmyShimmyYA - I know, and once in a while it can be a pleasant surprise but why not simply have someone like Miles or another Superman without the Spider-Man/Superman baggage. An original character that stands on their own without using an existing character name? When the second Captain Marvel (Monica, not Carol) came out in Amazing Spider-Man and continued in the Avengers, she became one of my favorite characters. The name she used wasn’t being used by someone else at the time because Mar-vel had just died. She later changed it but she never assumed the original Marvels rough gallery to get her over. She definitely should have had an ongoing series. But back to my point, it is a more risky option to launch a new series with an unknown as the lead, but doing it under the guise of an existing property is lazy and risk adverse.

It's just so crazy, it might work- for a while. I'm cautious over the different costume designs on the covers. That's a bad sign. However, the stories could be fresh. New villains with interesting objectives, another world to explore, etc. Make it interesting. Penny, penny.

I never really followed Superman comics, but have always loved everything he represents. I'm not sure why it is so difficult to keep him engaged with readers with outstanding stories. I honestly don't mind the switch - might even start reading again as I am more curious about this than have been about any character in a long time. So, if there is a gripe, I haven't been exposed to it. I just know, growing up with the original "Death of Superman" Run, its never really been the same. Even the Jim Lee run (my fav artist) was OK to say at best and confusing to follow to say the least, ad that was years ago.
