DC Comics Will Continue Releasing Titles Digitally As Diamond Stops Distributing Physical Copies

COVID-19 is hitting the comic book industry hard, and while the likes of Image Comics and Dark Horse won't be releasing any titles for the time being, DC Comics has now revealed plans for the pandemic...

Just like movie theaters, comic book stores are being hit hard by the Coronavirus pandemic, and there's concern that many of them will be unable to re-open by the time life returns to normal. With Diamond Comic Distributors forced to temporarily shut down, there's no way to distribute physical comic books to retailers (who won't be unable to sell them anyway due to lockdowns).

However, while a number of publishers (including Image Comics and Dark Horse) are halting the release of physical and digital copies of the comic books, DC Comics has now confirmed that this Wednesday's titles will go on sale digitally as per usual.

Based on comments from Adam Phillips, DC's Director of Marketing Services, this will be the case moving forward as well. "All our data shows the digital consumer and the physical consumer are two different audiences. For now, we're going to continue to release digital comics, but will revisit this if the pipeline for physical distribution continues to be challenged and disrupted."

As for whether DC Comics will consider allowing retailers to sell codes for digital comics, he said: "Not yet, but we'll look into it."

Marvel Comics is expected to also release titles as normal on Wednesday, but they haven't confirmed that one way or the other yet. It would be a surprising move for the big two comic book companies to halt digital sales, and while that will hurt retailers, it's not realistic for publishers to site on hundreds of comics for the foreseeable as it will then be the creators not getting paid to produce new ones!

It's a tricky situation all round, and the hope is that COVID-19 won't be a problem in late 2020 so that things can return to normal sooner rather than later. As things stand, though, the future of comic book stores looks to be even more at risk than movie theaters right now.

Marvel, Image, and IDW will probably follow, but I'm most curious on Dynamite since there's a The Boys sequel starting up that I'm mildly curious about.

@BlackBeltJones - Yeah. Garth Ennis is my guilty pleasure, I'm always curious to see if and how he can top himself with the goreporn.

Poor retailers lots of people will now switch to digital and might not go back to physical.

@kider - yeah, it’s weird. If they keep releasing digitally how with retail stores catchup? Make it an event where they sell all the physical copies stock piled?going to buy something physical that has been out for a month or longer? Hmmm. And the crazy variants they always sell at a premium? It’s a weird place. Wish they would have just waited so the hunger for new comics would go to an all new high

@MutantEquality - They should wait and release a bunch of new secret origins mini's or one-shots the moment stores reopen. Sell them for like $1 put in a bunch of ads for ongoing titles and try to get some new readers. That would help both the industry and the retailers.

@MutantEquality - "Wish they would have just waited so the hunger for new comics would go to an all new high"

It's more likely 'they' would have just moved on to some other form of entertainment. Many of 'them' would not have come back later.

@JDL - so you think after 80+ years of comics people will just...get over physical comics. After a month or two of comics everyone just buys an iPad and goes digital? Let’s not try to abandon Comic Book stores all together and hope that they have a come back

@MutantEquality - Basically yes, that's what will happen if the hiatus goes on long enough.

The only logical thing to do.

Retailers are pissed af, which i understand, but if it were up to them, they would put the Big 2 in standby for Rao knows how long.

This industry was already in deep shit, this could be the final blow, so it's better NOT to kill the momentum and keep making comics and distributing em by any means necessary.

Adapt or die, indeed.

I won't be reading digital copies ever, it would be a totally different reading experience.

Call me old fashioned but nothing beats turning the page of a comic book.

You will never again have a comic book increase in value because there would be no physical copies, it would be stuck in a device forever.

There is a lot of back issues I have never read, so time to try something new or complete a run.

I’m torn. I want to keep up and not fall behind, but digital books in general have no appeal to me. And I’m really nervous about how this will hurt the retail industry. My local shop was already struggling under quarantine, this is going to be really bad for them.

@SerKurtWagner - I keep ordering from advance solicitations, until Forbidden Planet tells me they aren't getting physical copies of what I ordered anymore I am continuing to do so.
The people that order in advance the publishers will see there is still a demand for them.

Honestly, the only Rebirth title I've read is Venditti's Hawkman and I'm still like 10 issues behind on the DC Universe app, so this doesn't affect me slightly.

Aside from the already printed comics sitting on a warehouse, the smart move will be to move physical distribution to collections, release a couple of volumes back to back when the stores open back up in a couple of months. Maybe make that the permanent model going forward, single issues are released digitally and print the collected volumes.
