Frank Miller's future in the world of comic books has been in doubt for quite some time but the legendary writer of hits like The Dark Knight Returns and Daredevil is now returning to DC Comics for Superman: Year One. Set to be published under the "Black Label" imprint, the first super-sized issue arrives in June, with #2 coming in August and #3 in October.

A single volume will then hit bookstores in November if that's your preferred way of reading a story like this.

Miller will be on writing duties only and John Romita Jr. is set to provide interior art alongside inker Danny Miki and colourist Alex Sinclair. Here's the synopsis teasing what to expect:

"Superman: Year One is a coming-of-age story for the future Man of Steel, featuring a young alien-boy just trying to find his place in a new world. Faced with the need to hide his heritage and powers in order to survive, Clark will find his humanity through the grounding of the Kent family and the relationships that will define the man he will become. Told by two of the most revered voices in comics, Superman: Year One is more than a superhero story – it’s about the choices made by Clark Kent on his path to becoming a legend. It’s a testament to the importance of choosing to become a hero."

Miller is, of course, responsible for Batman: Year One so it should be very interesting seeing what he brings to the table here. Romita Jr. has plenty of experience working on the Man of Steel after pencilling a short-lived series by Scott Snyder a few years back.

Here are the covers for all three issues and the eventual collected edition release:

Time for him to prove once and for all that he DOES NOT hate Superman.

As a Batman fan, TDKR was f*cking awesome.

But as a Superman fan, it was gutter trash.

I was super cool with TDK Strikes Again tho. :3

TDK III wasn't even co-written by him, i usually LOVE Azzarello, but he dropped the ball, yo.
But, again, Superman was fine, more than fine actually.

P.S. I will NEVER get tired of reading Superman's origin stories, this shit is evergreen!

@Doomsday8888 - I felt TDKSA was silly. How's DK III?

@RageDriver2401 - No listen to that idiot, TDKSA Start out great but when downhill very quickly. Dkiii was much better and you should check it out. It feels like a continuation of the first one

@RageDriver2401 - DKIII is a complete mess. I'm a huge fan of Miller and all, but it's damn near unreadable

@RageDriver2401 - TDKSA was utterly silly. And that may be the one thing I love the most about it. It was brilliant, but misunderstood.

DKIII was crap. Completely agree with everyone there.

@GwenLantern - it's been a really long time since I read TDKSA, but I remember hating the Dick Grayson Joker idea. Plus I think the artwork really ruined the experience for me. I couldn't take the book seriously with the horribly drawn characters.

I love both these creators, and I love Superman, so I'm sold. DK3 was solid, and I'm enjoying Romita's work on The Silencer.

Frank Miller is a weird guy where he's written some of the best comics decades ago, but has since been writing a lot of... well bad would be a euphemism.

Anyways, we sort of already got a great super-man year one:

I just hope it's true to the spirit of Superman and not needlessly gritty. I don't want Lois Lane to be a hooker or Jimmy Olsen to be abducted by a pedophile ring...

It must chap his britches to go from movie director back to writing funny books.
Couldn't have happened to a "nicer" guy.
Lol.

@rocketeuropa - Frank loves comics way more than movies. It's his home. He's a lifer. I'm sure he's happy where he is.
