Jason Aaron's exclusive contract is now over at Marvel Comics after 15 years (he actually started out at DC Comics) and the talented comic book writer has decided to become a free agent.

One of the first projects he's announced is a 6-issue limited series with Dough Mahnke titled, Batman Off-World. He's also teased that he's developing some creator-owned titles, as well.

The limited series will see a young Batman venture to an alien galaxy for the very first time, without any other Justice League members in tow.

It's a very clever premise and looks to explore something rarely tackled in Batman's long and varied mythos.

On his substack newsletter, Arron wrote, "I've mentioned here a few times that I've been working on a lot of new projects since my Marvel exclusive ended. It's probably not a complete shock that one of them would wind up being a Batman book. Seemed the right way to finally make my proper debut as a DC writer."

Aaron went on to confirm that the story will take a young Dark Knight, who only recently started his crimefighting career, very, very far from Gotham.

Aaron added, "BATMAN: OFF-WORLD is drawn by the legendary Doug Mahnke, who I've wanted to work with for years now, along with inker Jamie Mendoza. BATMAN: OFF-WORLD #1 will be coming your way November 21. And I'll be over here working on even more of those new projects."

The official synopsis for Batman Off-World #1 reads:

A routine night in Gotham City for a young Batman proves to be anything but routine when the crime-fighter is confronted with a sort of foe he’s never faced before—one from beyond the stars! A universe of possible alien threats leads Batman to make a daring decision—to venture alone into the far reaches of the cosmos for the very first time, where the Dark Knight will face the fight of his life!

Superstar writer Jason Aaron delivers his first Batman story ever, partnered with blockbuster artist Doug Mahnke for a unique, brutal tale!

Batman Off-World is priced at $3.99 for the standard version and $4.99 for the cardstock variant covers. Issue one will be released on November 21.

The premise is interesting but Aaron has lost his touch, his Avengers run was a nightmare.

@Doomsday8888 - I liked his Punisher for the most part. I think he’s just not a team book guy, especially one with stakes in the way Avengers has.

...this is a clever premise? Putting earthbound characters into space not only is overly played out but has been known as a sign of a franchise failing.

@Origame - I mean, it’s Batman. The clubhouse he hangs with his friends at is in space. One of his best friends is an alien. He’s been brought so space before. I think the premise is more about seeing it forced upon him at the beginning of his career.

@OmegaBlack13 - thats what team ups with those aliens are for. Just having him go to space on his own is weird.

They already did this

@PlusUltra - No one said that it hasn’t been done. Something rarely tackled means that it was tackled at least once.
