Neil Gaiman's Death Movie Still in the Works

The Endless' creator had a promising meeting with a director that's interested in the project

There's been no very little said regarding the film adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Death: The High Cost of Living since 2008. Back then, during the 20th Anniversary celebration for The Sandman series, the fan favorite author seemed positive that the wheels were steadily turning on the project:

"New Line is very much interested in making it," Gaiman told MTV News, "once the dust settles. That will probably happen, unless it doesn’t. The delight in doing ‘Death: The High Cost of Living’ is that it’s already a movie-shaped story. And it’s not even the fact that it’s Death from the Sandman comics. It’s just this lovely little story about a boy who’s depressed and a girl who says she’s Death, and the day they spend together."

The concept behind the story is that once every century, Death is incarnated as a mortal woman for a single day to experience what she takes from others. Since then, there has been little word on Death and Me, the working title for the film based upon the Death: The High Cost of Living series.

Just today, Neil Gaiman updated his verified Twitter account with the following:

The WETA he's referring to is the esteemed, visual effects studio that has worked on such films as Avatar, District 9, The Chronicles of Narnia, Hellboy and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The 'Guillermo' in question is none other than director Guillermo Del Toro; who is no stranger to comic book adaptations. He has already directed two Hellboy movies and the Blade sequel.

Though the director's slate appears to be full for the next year and a half, with four films currently in pre-production including the two part LOR prequel The Hobbit, he may be the guiding light that Gaiman is looking for.

This might not be a giant step in bringing one of The Endless to the silver screen, it is definitely a move in a positive direction.

MPP - What do you Sandman fans think? With all the delays surrounding The Hobbit, could Del Toro be the one to finally take the directorial reigns of the highly anticipated Death film?

O Hell mofreaking No!!! I hate [frick]ing Elle Paige. She's going to beat the movie to death with freaking "witty cultural reference after witty cultural observation". SHe can't pull off wearing the ankh earring or being an amorphous character that has been and has taken every know shape and form. Please for teh love of God dont Juno this shit up. On a none ranting note however I feel that if we got An actress like Summer glau we would have a good movie in the making! A woman with the right amount of comedy and grvitas then we would have something truly special.

*Please excuse spelling errors if there be any blame it on the boss.

@ leee777 ellen paige perfect, she can act, easy on the eye with those cute looks,i read in a uk film mag ,gaimen was on the set of hellboy 2 watching very closely to the process of film making,he told the mag that he had a scirpt for death the high cost of living, that would have a running time of about 40 mins of footage,he wants the movie to have a run time of about 1 hour & 30 minutes.
lets get this film of the ground.

Ellen Page could maybe pull it off. I can never cast any of the endless though (just Hugo Weaving as Destiny). Ricci would be better as Delirium.

And I thought Gaiman was planning on directing and he was just getting tips from Del Toro.

I'm a huge fan of The Sandman and Death graphic novels, and as much as I’d like to see a film I’m nervous about how it might turn out.

Death would be best played by an unknown, we don't "need" someone hot we need someone who can understand the character.

@Muti who's the picture of? I like it.

I've been a fan of Neil Gaiman since Sandman first kicked Vertigo Comics into action. I seriously do NOT want this movie made. With comic movies, especially Vertigo comic movies, they turn out to be completely changed and ultimately disappointing. I would prefer an animated movie with talented voice actors, but I guess that wouldn't make money for the suits now would it.

@punk I hear what you’re saying, but the only Vertigo movie adaptation I didn't like is Constantine - how can you not love V for Vendetta, it's defo one of the top 10 cbm's

punkazzINC - 3/15/2010, 12:42 PM
@kaos - Have you read V for Vendetta? They followed the guidelines for it, but completely changed the characters and their progression. It was needless to have the romantic relationship take the forefront. As a film on it's own merits it was pretty good. As a comic adaptation it missed the mark, much as League of Extraordinary Gentlemen did.
