RUMOR: DC COMICS' 5G Reboot Plans Significantly Reduced In The Wake Of Dan DiDio's Departure

5G, a line-wide reboot of DC Comics that saw heroes like Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman aged up and replaced by younger heroes, is said to have been reduced to a smaller number of titles.

Dan DiDio's departure from DC Comics sent shock waves through the industry and the story continues to develop as fans and journalists alike attempt to discern what his absence means for 5G, aka Generation 5. Most sites agree that 5G was set to be a line-wide reboot that saw the publisher's most popular heroes (like Batman, Superman, Aquaman, etc.) aged up and replaced by a younger, more diverse group of heroes who assume their mantles.

Now, Bleeding Cool is reporting that AT&T and Warner have given DC the mandate to reduce the original scope of 5G to, "a smaller line of books that have already had a number of issues completed." Additionally, whereas 5G was going to attempt to chronicle and categorize all of DC's past history, it's now going to cover a much smaller breadth of time.

On the surface, it certainly sounds as if AT&T and Warner are backtracking on 5G, but with so much of the work already completed, they don't have any choice but to press forward. Yet strangely enough, DC's overseers are also said to be simultaneously intrigued by the prospect of direct-to-video feature films based on the new 5G heroes.

Of course, sales figures will be the deciding factor regarding whether 5G is ultimately expanded or quietly swept under the rug. It would certainly be interesting to see the reaction to 5G's launch (which is rumored to be in October) resulting in DC outselling Marvel.

Finally some good news in the world. DiDio thinks 90s grim n grit is what young people want. Not to mention his abysmal treatment of Dick Grayson or Wally West.

@mattniles007 - Grim and grit is what people do want from DC. What they didn't want from Didio was loose continuity that didn't matter. Long time readers don't like new writers making the events of old issues worthless, otherwise what's the point of collecting them?

@mattniles007 - I really don't know what Didio had against the two most successful sidekicks in all of comicdom.
What's even more confounding is that he went and created a bunch of Marvel pastiches and tried to pass them off as new original DC characters, i.e. Sideways and Silencer and that thing that looks like Uatu.

@Battabing -
Marvel and DC have been ripping each other off the whole time. Some of it is just exploring archetypes in different fashions.

@mattniles007 - The worst thing about Dick Grayson's treatment is that he could easily be as big as Spiderman if given a push like Harley was.

A cheerful and friendly young adult acrobat character who constantly has relationship problems, weird family troubles, and is trying to carve out his own place in the world away from his obsessive father.

Hell, MCU Spiderman literally IS Dick Grayson.

Giving Wally West the powers of Dr. Manhattan is so [frick]ing dumb

@tmp3 - He hasn't got Manhattan powers yet. He has Metron's powers. But I wouldn't be shocked if he gets the Manhattan power soon.

DC to DiDio after hearing this idea:

Yeah that worked out great for Marvel Comics.

This isn’t even an original idea it’s been done in else worlds before

@Ha1frican - I like the clarification "An Imaginary Tale"... as opposed to the usual adventures of an alien and vigilante dressed as a bat.

@Ha1frican - yeah if they want to give 5G a try, either do another elseworld or set up an imprint

@Ha1frican - Read it last week, since someone on here mentioned it when they first announced 5g. Twas nice.

I just hope they get rid of this bi-monthly BS, Tom King's Batman run could've been sooooo much better if he had been given more time to craft his stories.

Though I am a little concerned that if AT&T has that kind of control then they're going to install a yes-man to replace Didio and mandate movie/book synergy and that's always bad news.

I wouldn't mind seeing it in an elseworlds type book tbh similar to the Generations book they did a while back.
