It's been announced today that DC Universe Online will be released on January 11th 2011 for PC and PS3. Along with the date comes the pricing information of $59.99 on PS3 and $49.99 on PC. This of course includes a 1 month subscription with the now standard MMO subscription rate of $14.99 per month. There is also talk of a lifetime subscription price of $199. Here is the press release in full:

Sony Online Entertainment LLC (SOE) today announced that the highly anticipated online action game DC Universe™ Online (DCUO), has reached gold master status and will be available at retail outlets worldwide on the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and PC on January 11, 2011. DCUO, licensed by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment on behalf of DC Entertainment, will be the first online game based in the DC Universe, the first MMO on PlayStation 3, and the first time DC Universe Online will be accessible to the millions DC Universe fans.

"Creating DC Universe Online has been a massive undertaking, and we're excited to be that much closer to launch," said Christopher Cao, Game Director of DCUO for Sony Online Entertainment. "We're grateful to our beta players for providing us invaluable feedback in these final stages that has enabled us to put the finishing touches on a fun and exciting experience when the game launches in January."

DC Universe Online will carry an anticipated retail price of US$59.99 for PlayStation 3 and US$49.99 for PC in North America. The game includes one 30-day game membership, with monthly subscriptions available thereafter for US$14.99. For customers playing the PC version of the game, DCUO will be included in SOE's all-in-one Station Access subscription. Sony Online Entertainment expects to update the game regularly with new episodes featuring iconic DC Comics characters, new instances and major in-game events.

As a traditional action-based MMO that combines fast-paced, twitch-based combat with an interactive physics system to deliver a new and unique gameplay experience, DC Universe Online brings the DC Universe to life, allowing players to create their own superheroes - or villains - and join forces with their favorite DC Comics characters such as Superman, Batman and The Joker to aid in saving - or destroying - the universe.

DC Universe Online is rated T for Teen by the ESRB with the following content descriptors: Mild Blood, Mild Language, Mild Suggestive Themes and Violence. For more information about DC Universe Online, visit www.DCUniverseOnline.com.

I am glad that they are coming out with this game but I have to agree with SHHH; I wish there was an option for you to create your own or be one of the traditional heroes. DC has in the past created a game where you had limited options e.g. Justice League Heroes. I personally love Comic RPG games. Hence why I wonder, when will DC produce a game similar to Ultimate Alliance without those pesky limited options.

Anyone else feel the same way?

why cant you guys create a character with the attributes of batman or superman. i am on side of the fence where i dont mind creating my own unique character. and just think of how many players would flood the game with batman and superman and well known characters

As a beta player of DCUO and a long-time player of World Of WarCraft (since closed beta, so before WoW was actually released, I was playing it) and of various other MMOs (EQ, AC, AoC, I've tried a few others too), I encourage everyone to give this game a try.

I genuinely like this game. It has a completely new approach to combat vs. your standard MMO, the 3 different movement types (flying, speed, acrobatics) are all awesome and unique, and it doesn't feel like it's trying to compete with WoW, which is the failure of so many other similar games. This game just feels like a good, fun, super-hero MMO, and currently, I feel like it's the best super-hero MMO on the market.

This game has your basic new-MMO-flaws and will be touched up and improved on over time, so don't expect to go into this game imagining it's in perfect shape. What this game does have it something I don't use lightly with MMOs: Potential. The only thing this game needs to get itself up and running is a strong community who are committed to the game.

Hey fellow beta players. Anyone else think Supergirl's costume is crazy skimpy in the game?

Anyway, I am having a ball with it. And you can create a charactor very similar to the big three. I play mainly with my Superman (actually Mon-El) rip off.

Supersteveprime18, a beta is more or less like a really long, detailed demo. It's for people to see what the game will be like. That's all. It's usually for computer games, or games that are really long. You wouldn't launch a beta for a game like Tekken. You would launch it for something like World of Warcraft.
Matowar
Matowar - 12/21/2010, 4:11 PM
A beta is a test phase for the game. It gives the creators a chance to load up the servers and check for mistakes that can be fixed before the majority of people play. Also the reason you cant play as Superman, Batman, etc is because there will be thousands of people playing and who would choose the Blue Beetle over Superman? There would be thousands of Superman's running around, that is just dumb. You can create a character based on Superman. Ive been in the Beta since the beginning and it is awesome. If you are a comic fan and a game fan you need to play this game. 14 bucks a month is nothing considering the replay value of this game.

I'm in the Beta. Beta testing is not there to be a demo, Majick. You're there to offer feedback on what works or doesn't, and find bugs in the game.

After seeing the gameplay get progressively less interesting and more restrictive with each patch, with PC controls that are still subpar, I'll pass on this one. When PC players have complained about the controls, the replies we usually get start something along the lines of "Well if you use a PS3 or XBox controller...." Yeah, if I wanted to do that, I'd play a console game, not a PC game.

Once I got past the novelty of finding my favorite DC icons in Gotham or Metropolis or the Watchtower, it got old, to be honest.

The level cap is 30, which I did in less than two weeks of casual play. After that you get to grind through the same Raids and Alerts over and over in hopes of getting better gear. Despite having six different mentors (3 hero, 3 villain) making alts just means repeating most of the same content over and over for each one, regardless of where you start or whose path you're following.

It's essentially the bastard child of WoW and the DCU, where you have limited appearance options at the start because they want you to accumulate your costume and gear as you level up. Because nothing says "I'm a superhero!" more than hoping you get a different pair of boots from beating one of Bane's flunkies.

I wrote a full review this afternoon for my CoH SG's forum. It wasn't pretty.

The game has a ton of potential, but SOE's shooting itself in the foot in too many places.

@ Supersteve

Playstation plus users can download the beta. I think its on pc too, but idk for sure

The Beta is pretty much a huge demo of the game. We wont have the characters that we have made on the beta though. when the game comes out we will have to start fresh too

another quick question, can you make your hero have all the powers of say superman or do you only get 1 like superstrength, superspeed, flight ect?

@Tittie
I have talked to Chris Cao at SOE Fan Faire about that. Thier first expansion plans is Space and the "Light Powers". This means more than just the GL Corp to be added. It has to wait for the first expansion so they can do justice to be a Green Lanturn. That said, I think they are wanting to do all the ring colors plus explore the other Space groups as well.

Beta is not a demo. Gamers are invited to help submit bug reports and test the early (or beta) version of the game before release. Go to the DCUO web site to register for beta testing.

You CAN create a hero inspired by Superman, Wonder Woman, etc....Or custom.....They don't start off or end up an exact replica but you def. feel like a Krytonian, Amazon etc.....
TheDemonHunter
TheDemonHunter - 12/21/2010, 8:42 PM
@JYCowboy -- That whole bit about waiting to do justice to being a Lantern is code for "we're waiting to release it alongside the movie so we can draw those people in at the same time." The movie is like a two-hour ad for the game that way. I'll be shocked if they don't have some kind of ad for the game either in the previews or in theater lobbies.

And for all of you still excited about this game, the last game I remember doing the Lifetime Subscription announcement before it was released was Champions Online, another much-hyped superhero MMO that eventually went Free-to-Play because it was so bad it couldn't keep players. I'm not sayin' DCUO is as bad as Champions, but precedent has been set already, and SOE doesn't have the best reputation for supporting their MMO stable as it is.

Just a cautionary tale for all of you to think about.

Good luck to them if it's as buggy in three weeks as it is now.

I'd love to play this if it wasn't for the needless $15.00 a month. We already have City of Heroes and Champions online, why on earth do we need a DC Online?!

They should have made it an offline game only, for that reason alone. Instead, we get yet "another" online super-hero game.

And it's probably going to be nothing more than a mindless hack'n'slash just like City of Heroes, Ultimate Alliance 1 & 2 and JLA: Heroes with very little RPG elements.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

I'm amazed at how little the people on here actually know about the game.

I'm in the PS beta right now and honestly, having played a lot of MMO's this is easily the best; witch is a truly amazing thing because it doesn't even have .05% of the content it will soon. That really speaks volumes, because they’re already hundreds of hours of game here.

If your confused; a open beta is basically this massive play test done by consumers to help add polish and to help perfect a games game play before its release.

I've made 8 completely unique characters so far and I love it.

The combat in this game is insanely satisfying, it’s what pounding the piss out of enemies like a super hero/villain would and should feel like.

So far as the action combat, this is true, physics based, I hit square and my guy punches you in the face, you go flying down the street type of game play. It’s epic to say the least. No other MMO has that, quite literally, every other MMO that isn't a crappy space ship game. Theirs none of that just plain lame, click a power/ability box and watch your character do a boring animation as you aimlessly trot around a world with no physics, couldn't feel more dull.

If you've been waiting for an MMO that delivers beat em’ up, epic scale combat. This is indeed, what you've been waiting for. Even the movement is an integral part of the combat.

@Knight

"And it's probably going to be nothing more than a mindless hack'n'slash just like City of Heroes, Ultimate Alliance 1 & 2 and JLA: Heroes with very little RPG elements."

Way off. Play it and it'll change your mind.

@Tittie

Because 600, 000 Green Lanterns flying around Gotham and Metropolis makes a lot of sense right? ...Right? (Big Honkin' Sarcasm Alert!)

The movement in this game also feels as epic as it should; running, scaling buildings like spider-man, flying about at super sonic speeds or braking the sound barrier as you run up the side of a building... Just moving around in the game is more fun and epic than any other MMO on the market today.

I think the mind blowing scale of these city's deserve a mention as well, however big you imagine them being; they're bigger, a lot bigger.

Some of the places I've visited aside from the gargantuan Metropolis and Gotham are Small Ville (Kent farm), Arkham Asylum, Sinestro Corps VS the Green Lantern Corps at Ace Chemical, Star Labs, The Watch Tower, The Hall Of Doom, Black Adams eastern desert country and much, much more.

Smashing a bus on someone’s head is pretty fun as well.

Give this game a try, you won’t regret it.

Powers rumored to be in the games first few expansions:

Stretchy Powers ala Plastic-Man/Mr. Fantastic

Hard Light, Sharp Beam/Laser Powers (What Green Lanterns do more or less)

More shape-shifting options for the nature class.

Two new weapon choices.

Two new combat role choices.

Monthly end game content. (via updates, not expansion)

New Character Create Costume pieces.

New Body Types.

Themyscira, Paradise Island, mystical home of Wonder Woman.

The Green Lantern home world, Oa. Likely for instances and raids.

Apocalypse, DarkSieds slave planet and home world. Likely for instances and raids.
