Rocksteady boss Sefton Hill has revealed in a recent interview with PSM3 that the follow-up to the critically acclaimed Arkham Asylum (which is set to be released sometime next year) will be both open world AND linear.

When asked to define the game's genre, he said: "We don't want to define Arkham City as an open world or linear experience."

"While the backbone is still the strong main narrative, there'll also be many character-driven sub-plots to reward gamers who explore the streets," he added. "These optional side aspects will flesh out the story and show how many of Gotham's greatest villains have adapted to life inside a new facility."

"So overall, there are elements of both a linear story and more open world adventure. I believe this combination will give the game a completely unique feel while remaining unmistakably authentic to Batman."



Comic Book Resources have got their hands on a batch of new images from the upcoming video game which is set to be released on Playstation 3 and PC this coming November. Included is the press release they issued along with the screenshots.

This week's DC Universe Online screenshot batch features key landmarks from Metropolis and Gotham City, more "Play As Iconic" action, and killer PvP combat!

Locations:

Ace O' Clubs Bar - The Ace of Clubs is a pub located in the New Troy district of Metropolis. The pub is owned and operated by Superman's number one fan, Bibbo Bibbowski.

Steelworks - The Steelworks is the home and laboratory for one John Henry Irons, a.k.a. "Steel."

Amusement Mile - Located in Gotham City, Amusement Mile is the location for the Joker's Fun House.

Play As Iconic:

The Dark Knight, plus one, takes on Bane in the Burnley Freight Yards. Bane has the distinction of being the one man who broke Batman's back in the "Knightfall" storyline (May - October 1993).

Unfortunately, $15 a month is still too much for me to play DCUO. That's $180 for a year plus the $60 to buy the game in the first place. $240! You can buy 4 games for that!

Here in Brazil, a newly released videogame costs the equivalent of $ 120 to $ 150. Is half the average worker's monthly salary as a maid or housekeeper.

its a f*cking joke that they're charging players to play the game in the first place.

all ps3 games online play is normally free,if you start charging people to play this game.

whats stopping other game companies from charging us to play their games online.

But hang on a second...you've got to pay to play DC Universe Online on the PS3? [frick] that. It's looks great and all but why the hell should I pay them on a monthly basis to play that game? What exactly makes it worth spending that money? I'll save my cash for Batman: Arkham City thanks!

@telavizion: I went to GameTop and asked about it and they said it is monthly of $15. I also looked on the box and it said the 1st month you play the game is free after you buy it.

@.....well, almost everybody here: Monthly fees are the case with many big ticket MMOs (and a DC MMO is certainly big ticket), so why did you expect differently with this one? What stops other game companies from doing this is quite simple really: not all game companies are making MMOs. In fact, of the PS3's whole library, there are only 2 titles that require a monthly fee (with both not being out yet): DCUO and Final Fantasy 14. It's an MMO, monthly fees are the norm. Of course there are exceptions to that, but this game has too much blockbuster potential to be free-to-play. /hopefully helpful mini-rant

Both the PS3 and PC versions of DCUO will be Pay to play. Whomever assumes differently is wrong.

Why would the company making the game decide to charge a monthly fee for one system but not the other? That assumption is the most rediculous thing i've ever heard.

@BIGBMH, deadpool72, InTylerWeTrust, Since you guys (and I'm sure there's more I missed.) don't quite grasp the concept of why MMORPGs have a monthly fee, as someone that used to work in the field let me explain it to you.

You pay 15.00 a month for an ever evolving world that is constantly adding new content into it. Yes new content constantly being added. So while you can buy 4 games that will take you a few hours to beat with an MMORPG you get countless hours of game play with new content usually being added.

Now there are F2P MMO (Free to Play) but those games make their money by making you pay real world money for Items, abilities etc. You need to progress or be good at the game.

Now there is one anomaly to all of this and that's a little game called Guild Wars, it's one of the few MMO's you just purchase the game and that's it.. However the amount of added content between expansions is scarce compared to games such as World of Warcraft etc.

So before you QQ 15 dollars a month is to much, you should know what goes into it. In the long run you save more money playing MMO's than you do console games.

I'm not sure if I'm willing to pay to play online. After all, why should I? Because it's an open world game where I can create a character and play with other people? I can think of literally a dozen other games I can do the same sort of thing on. It'll really depend how much it is...I dont think I'd be willing to play any more than about £5 a week and it would have to be a really good game to justify that. As someone who doesnt play MMO's on PC (World of Warcraft for example) having to pay on my PS3 is something I dont like the sound of! :P

@Josh, you're not just paying to play. You're paying for server upkeep in game customer support, constantly added content, all these things you can NOT get from your standard PS3 game.

MMO's have tons of content that is added after release, whether it be new powers or new missions, that you don't have to pay for because it's part of your monthly subscription.

Also people harassing you? Got stuck somewhere and resetting not helping, then you contact in game customer support to look into your issues. That's also part of your subscription live in game support.

Server getting laggy, tired of waiting for the host to do maintenance, with most MMO's you get weekly to Bi Monthly server maintenance to make sure your game is running smoothly.

Or better yest server down? You have people working to get it up asap.

IMO all of this plus more is well worth 15.00 bucks a month.

Another awesome tidbit about MMO's there's always something to do, and there is no end to the game, so you can't beat it in one night.

Damn, 15 $ is TOO MUCH, especially after they told us last year that DCUO was going to be free. I won't buy this, but I've registered for beta from TWO ACCS and no one has been chosen to. Eeeeeh.

Skot888- While i do very much appreciate the information you've given us and agree with your points, i also have to say that for anyone that's not a recently graduated high school student, living with their parents with a part time job and no bills to pay, taking a sabatical year off before college, no kids to feed and no girlfriend to take out, 60$ + 15$/month is WAY too expensive for ANY game, regardless of what you get for it. A simple game such as Arkham City which such a student could finish in 24 straight gaming hours could actually last a good month and a half to anyone else that has... not necessarily a "life" per say but rather... "commitments", preventing them to go back to the good ol' days when MMO's were the best reason to wake up in the mornings (noon-ish).

Shaman, you honestly think that you are better than everybody don't you? The guy was merely giving us the good points about paying a subscription fee and you had to shit all over his life. You're a pretty judgmental person for someone who draws pictures of celebrities dressed up as superheroes.

That said, I'm not paying $15 a month for this game, maybe I'll but it and play for the free month, than sell it back to the store or something.
