AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #31 To Feature Mary Jane's Superhero Debut As She Suits Up As The New Jackpot

Marvel Comics has announced that next month's Amazing Spider-Man #31 will be an oversized issue packed with surprises.

It's said that a host of all-star talent will join Zeb Wells and John Romita Jr. to set up their exciting second year on the title with story preludes, glimpses of some of the biggest upcoming Spider-projects, and awesome extra bonus stories including a tale by writer Celeste Bronfman and artist Alba Glez.

In that, we'll see the launch of Mary Jane Watson's exciting new era as Jackpot!

A superhero with that moniker - and MJ's striking red hair - debuted during Amazing Spider-Man's "Brand New Day" era but was later revealed to be someone else entirely. Now, Mary Jane is finally going to suit up.

Her new "jackpot" powers were recently explored in the pages of Jed MacKay and Vincenzo Carratu's Mary Jane & Black Cat limited series and now, she’s ready to show off her exciting abilities to the Marvel Universe at large as a bona fide superhero.

Bronfman and Glez's touching story will see MJ come to terms with the heartbreaking tragedy that occurred to her family in recent issues before taking to the streets to help others in need. Mary Jane’s journey as Jackpot will continue in upcoming issues of Amazing Spider-Man as well as a yet-to-be-announced new limited series.

This is definitely an interesting direction to take the character in, even if it isn't the reunion with Peter Parker we know many of you have been hoping for. Needless to say, we can't help but wonder whether Zendaya's MJ might one day also suit up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a move which would be fun to explore on screen.

You can see Humberto Ramos' Jackpot design below. As for Amazing Spider-Man #31, it will arrive in comic book stores on August 9.

Eh, I don't mind it. It's a nice little change to the status quo.

I never liked the idea of a superhero MJ. Especially in her younger years, one of the things that made her dynamic with Peter interesting is that she had a rough home life, and her public image was in a way her outlet like Spider-Man was Peter's outlet. They both lived a bit of a double life.

I suppose once she's older, the dynamic changes. But it always felt to me like she still put on this ultra charismatic mask.

Admittedly, I haven't read this new run of hers, but adding a superhero layer feels a bit like overcomplicating a reasonably deep character. But I get that they're trying something new.

I just never really liked the idea that everyone has to one day either be a superhero or a super villain.

Who still reads comics now? Best time for comics was 70-90s. Stories from 2000 til now are trash.
