The announcement was made earlier today by Marvel's chief creative officer, Joe Quesada. A ten-year veteran of the company himself, Alonso got his start in comics at DC's Vertigo imprint. He joined Marvel in 2000 as a senior editor and helped oversee critically lauded runs of Amazing Spider-Man and the X-Men, along with revisioning western character Rawhide. During his ten year reign as E-i-C, Joe Quesada has overseen many critically acclaimed comic events and series such as Civil War, The Death of Captain America and The Ulitmates as well as more controversial moments like the erasing of Spider-Man's marriage to Mary Jane Watson in One More Day.

Here is the full press release which was released by Marvel earlier today:

Marvel Worldwide, Inc announced today that it has promoted Axel Alonso to Editor-in-Chief, Marvel Entertainment. In this new role, Mr. Alonso will report to Dan Buckley Publisher & President, Print, Animation & Digital Divisions, Marvel Worldwide Inc. Mr. Alonso will oversee all day to day aspects of Marvel’s Publishing division, including advising on the editorial creative direction, developing new storylines and brainstorming new initiatives. Additionally, Mr. Alonso will work on creative aspects of development of larger corporate initiatives involving Marvel’s popular library of characters. The announcement was made today by Joe Quesada, Chief Creative Officer of Marvel Entertainment.

Mr. Quesada stated, "It’s with tremendous pride that I announce Axel Alonso’s promotion to Editor-In-Chief. For over a decade, Axel’s been instrumental in bringing fresh new voices to Marvel and reinventing our biggest characters like Spider-Man, the X-Men, Wolverine and so many more. He’s fought to create unique imprints like Marvel MAX while also bringing fresh new voices to the Marvel family."

Working in comics for over 15 years, Mr. Alonso began working at Marvel in 2000 as a Senior Editor and was promoted to Vice President, Executive Editor in 2010. Overseeing acclaimed runs of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN and X-MEN, in addition to shepherding groundbreaking projects such as X-STATIX and RAWHIDE KID, Mr. Alonso developed a reputation for bringing readers the unexpected and the electrifying. He also oversaw cross-promotional projects such as the creative collaboration between Marvel Entertainment and ESPN The Magazine on their recent NBA Preview issue, which drew attention across the world from mainstream media for it’s innovation.

"Marvel has a great history of the most dynamic and memorable EiCs in comics history and I’m honored to step into this role," said Axel Alonso. "I’ve been blessed to work with some of the most creative men and women in the world, bringing to life some of the most compelling stories you’ll find in any medium. This new role provides me with exciting challenges and prospects I’ve never encountered before, but I know one thing—Marvel’s getting even bigger in 2011."

"Most of you know Axel from his high profile job as Vice President, Executive Editor and the man behind some of our very best and edgiest books," added Joe Quesada. "Time and time again, Axel has proven that he is one of the very best story editors in the history of our medium and one of the finest people I know. And, like everyone here at Marvel, he has one single focus, bringing you the best stories with the best characters in all of comicdom. That’s why I have no doubt that Axel will bring Marvel Comics to greater heights than it’s ever known!"

As part of this strategic initiative, Joe Quesada will focus on his duties as Chief Creative Officer, overseeing Marvel’s creative endeavors in film, television, publishing, digital and more. In his ten-year tenure as Editor-In-Chief, Mr. Quesada was instrumental in Marvel’s rise to prominence as a global entertainment juggernaut and the increased profile of the comic book medium. Mr. Quesada brings his expertise and experience to further strengthen the Marvel brand as a leader in worldwide entertainment.

What do you guys think of this news? A few of his decisions in recent years has made Joe Quesada unpopular with some fans, but there's no doubting that he's been responsible for a lot more good than bad, and his ten years as Editor-in-Chief has resulted in some of the greatest Marvel stories and moments in the companies history. Be sure to share your thoughts on this news in the usual place!

Nice, but my initial reaction was, "They fired Quesada?!?" Good to see he's staying on, he's a huge reason Marvel has been revitalized in the new millennium.

I became a Marvel fan while Quesada was on the job, so I can't really say if I was pleased with his performance. I probably should be.

But yeah, the OMD thing is a huge strike against.

Quesada is an artist and that's where he should've
stayed! He's not a good writer or administrator.
There may have been some innovations while he was
in there but more crap was done than good!

I don't know anything about Alonzo but it will
probably be more of the same crap as usual from
the NEW MARVEL! I hate Ultimates and OMD! My heroes
I grew up with are all screwed-up!

SPIDERNEIL@, don't hold your breath! They're most
probably keeping SPIDEY stuck in OMD hell!

@ kidzombie

I agree that comics need to be paired down.
I don't collect x-men because they have too many books.

Marvel didn't fire Joe Q, they promoted him to creative director. The only reason Alonso got the job is becuase he probably did a lot of butt kissing and/or screwing for Joe Q. For right now I'd give the new guy the benfeit of the doubt, but don't expect anything new.

I hope that Axel focuses on getting/keeping the old classics in print in a hardcover and sometimes over-sized format.

The one thing that killed me about Quesada was his rush to get EVERYTHING recent collected in tpb and hc almost immediately after finishing its run in comic book form! Yet we still have no HC Omnibus of the Kree-Skrull War after 40 years!! Unbelieveable!

Quesada's era of ruining the great Marvel characters that made me a fan of comics is over? PRAISE THE LORD! Only thing that would be better would be if they fired his worthless ass and shipped him to Image, where he belongs. Quesada may have done a handful of good things, but that is overshadowed by the many HORRIBLE things he did or oversaw that have managed to force me to quit buying their books. I also HATE the filth-infested ultimates, the unending barrage of "events" and other insipid crossovers and cheap shocks that are the only way Marvel can sell books now.

He did a lot of good for Marvel, but One More Day was an act that cannot go excused. I was all- NO ALL about ASM all the way to "The Other" storyline and after OMD my love for comics as a whole went down. They need to address it...

You guys are all idiots, I am sorry.

OMD was great. And Brand New Day has put out some of the best comic book stories ever written, the Rhino story in particular being my favorite of all time.

Do you guys even READ the comics or just jump on the crybaby wagon?
