This May, eternal darkness washes over the Marvel Universe in Jed MacKay and Pepe Larraz's Blood Hunt. The upcoming event kicks off when various vampire factions, united for the first time in millennia, engineer a global attack using Darkforce energy to block out the sun.
Having lurked in the shadows of the Marvel Universe since its very beginning, vampires are now unleashed on humanity as heroes and villains alike fall prey to their overwhelming bloodlust. That leaves us to ask one very important question: Who will bite it?
Today, you can take a first look at special "Fangs Variant Covers" that adorn each issue of the main Blood Hunt series.
Illustrated by David Baldeón, these eye-catching covers spotlight the ferocity of some of the saga's major players including Dracula, Tigra, and pop culture's premier vampire hunter, Blade.
"I think that there's something interesting in the idea that Blade can never win," MacKay recently said of the Daywalker's role in the event. "He's out there every night, going after the vampires, and even when he gets a big win, it never seems to last long. But that doesn't stop him, and he doesn't age, so he'll just keep doing what he does until it kills him. There's a drive to Blade that sets him apart.”
Blood Hunt is described as "a grand-scale epic that's been seeded in Marvel comics for decades." MacKay has laid the groundwork for the story in the pages of Moon Knight, while comics such as Miles Morales: Spider-Man and Bloodline: The Daughter of Blade have also set the stage for the crossover.
However, while this looks set to be a rewarding read for longtime fans, Marvel Comics has said repeatedly that Blood Hunt also serves as an entry point for newer readers. With a Blade movie somewhere on the horizon, we won't be surprised if elements of the story eventually find their way into theaters.
