CAPTAIN AMERICA #1 Trailer Teases J. Michael Straczynski's Vision For Steve Rogers' Past, Present, And Future

Babylon 5 scribe J. Michael Straczynski is known by Marvel Comics fans for his critically acclaimed runs on titles like Amazing Spider-Man and Thor. This September, however, he makes his long-awaited return to the company to take the reins of one of its greatest icons in a new run of Captain America

Joined by artist Jesús Saiz and colourist Matt Hollingsworth, Straczynski is said to have bold plans for the Star Spangled Avenger with a saga that takes root in Steve Rogers' earliest days while threatening to throw his future into chaos.

Even before he became Marvel’s star-spangled hero, Steve Rogers was a fighter. Embark on a fascinating journey to never-before-seen days of Steve's youth where a powerful evil seeks to end Cap’s legacy before it begins. And back in the present, Captain America is giving back to the community in ways only he can by tackling crime on the local level.

All that changes when this existential threat from the past begins making moves towards Steve in the here and now, starting with recruiting some of his deadliest former foes. In addition to deepening Captain America's comic book mythos, Straczynski and Saiz will also delve into a largely unexplored chapter of Steve's life in the late 1930s, as the fascism swallowing Europe threatened to take root in New York City.

Today, our best look yet at the series has been revealed courtesy of an exciting new trailer for Captain America #1

Featuring never-before-seen artwork including an epic motorcycle battle, exciting team-ups with the Fantastic Four and Spider-Man, and a heartfelt memory of Steve with his mother, everything we see here points to Straczynski's run being one that delivers everything fans love about this character.

"Overall, the goal is to do some really challenging stories, some really fun stories, and get inside Steve’s head to see who he really is in ways that may not have been fully explored before," the writer says. "If folks like what I did with Peter in Amazing Spider-Man, and Thor in, well, Thor, then they should give this a shot, because I’m really swinging for the bleachers in this one!"

Captain America #1 arrives in comic book stores on September 20.

A time in Steve's life I have always wanted to see explored. Straczynski is great and his fun Spidey run I just re-read.

@ferf - If you're talking about the header image, yeah, that's some very 90s looking shit, but I think it's a variant cover. The interior art shown in the trailer is much better.

That face may be worse than Romita Jr, or even Frank Quietly.

Can we please give people under 30 a shot at these books? JMS is great, but having a 70 year old man on a Captain America run is not the way to keep the character on the cutting edge of culture.

@OmegaBlack13 - Obviously ageism is still the only socially-acceptable form of discrimination. They did let younger "cutting edge" writers take on Captain America and sales tanked. JMS is one of the best in the biz, this should be cause for optimism not boomer-bashing.

@soberchimera - dude. the people in the comments have some of the most asinine hot takes. give someone under 30 a shot? for [frick]s sake what the [frick] does that even mean?!!??

@OmegaBlack13 - Just curious, what Legacy Characters has the Under 30 Crowd been successful with in recent years?
For once, I'm not being a dick - I've glanced at almost every reboot in recent memory and can't think of anything that was noteworthy.

@soberchimera - Hey man, I just think that as much good new talent there is out there, it’s wild to go back to dudes who were writing these characters 20-30 years ago. We need fresh perspectives in cape comics, otherwise things just become echo chambers calling back to old stuff. Also I didn’t finish the Lanzing/Kelly Cap run but I really liked what I read of it.

@supermanrex - What’s even a little unclear about that?

OmegaBlack13 - 7/25/2023, 12:32 PM
@Batmangina - I think Donny Cates did cool things with Thanos, and I didn’t read it but he’s generally held to have revitalized Venom. I liked his Thor. Tbh with you, looking at people like Al Ewing, Rainbow Rowell, and NK Jemesin all being ~50 maybe it’s not even about age but just about new blood. We don’t need to be putting Peter David on Hulk books in 2023. Even if they’re older, let’s just try to hear from voices that have never wrote for big 2 cape books before.

That said, I do look at how Gerry Conway was 21 writing the Death of Gwen Stacy. Priest started writing at 22. Levitz, Wolfman, Moore, the list goes on. For awhile there the biggest innovations with these characters came from new guys with new ideas. It just feels silly to go back instead of forward.

@OmegaBlack13 - Both Captain America books can't even break into the top 70 in comic book sales anymore, you might like it, but the GA has checked out. It's time for someone who actually understands the character and knows how to write entertaining stories, their age is irrelevant.

@soberchimera - I get that, I’m just sure that someone with a fresher perspective than a septuagenarian whose comics we’ve already seen can be found. Also, let’s check back in with JMS’s numbers. I’m sure those first few issues will be good but I’m curious to see what it’ll look like on issues that can’t be returned.

@OmegaBlack13 - You automatically win by rattling off legit 70s greats like Conway, Levitz and Wolfman.

I tried the new Hawkgirl and it was awful - having an ACAB Hawkgirl doesn't make much sense since they were space cops from Thanagar. That's the kind of shit I fear will happen in most cases.
OmegaBlack13
OmegaBlack13 - 7/25/2023, 10:02 PM
@Batmangina - Haha, hey man I just hate that the comic industry will say “wow, this fresh young gun made everything do a paradigm shift, the obvious choice is to simply have that same guy keep doing stuff.”

Well technically Kendra was never a space cop, she in a past/parallel reincarnated life that she’s said to not feel much of a connection to was. So honestly I think her going in that direction to separate her from the sort of authoritative Hawks is an okay idea. But yeah, ACAB stuff will always fall a bit flat as long as cape books are what they are.

@soberchimera - And after his done with that he needs to do a new The Amazing Spider-Man run (without Marvel's interence!)

I liked Straczynski's run on Spider-Man and Thor, I still have those issues, so I'll keep my eye out for his Cap run.

Nice art too.
