Disney Want Marvel Movie Character Rights Back From Sony And Fox!

Disney want the rights back to Fantastic Four, X-Men, Daredevil and Spider-Man but it might not be that easy despite the fact that their lawyers are apparently looking through their agreements for some sort of loophole...

Here are the main excerpts from the report over at IESB:

There are four Marvel franchises that Disney does not control and word is they want them back. Three are controlled by 20th Century Fox and one by Sony.

Insiders are telling IESB Disney would love to get Fantastic Four back under their control and that this series, above all, fits the Disney mold the best being the first superhero family.

While Daredevil isn't considered a first tier character, the Mouse House wants Matt Murdock and his alter ego Daredevil back under the control of Marvel Entertainment.

Disney will never and I mean never, ever, not in a 100 years, get this property back under the control of Marvel Entertainment, just not going to happen. Fox owns all of these properties for perpetuity, in other words, for-ev-ver....for-ev-ver...

Word on the street is Fox has made it very clear that they will not let go of any of the properties under their control for any live action medium.

We've also been told that if it ever came to the point where they were going to lose any property they own because of failing to have a movie in production, they would simply produce a low budget, straight-to-DVD feature and stick it in any theater to fulfill their theatrical release clause.

So what about Sony's Spider-Man franchise? Same thing as the Fox deal, the contracts protect the studio 100% but they do have to continue to make movies with the Marvel characters on a regular basis. Spider-Man is not going anywhere, that also includes Venom.

Bottom line, the Sony and Fox contracts are rock solid. They will both keep their respective properties under their control. But you can be sure because they have plenty of money to spend, Disney will still have those Mickey Mouse lawyers looking for a loop hole....and to that I say, good luck!

As I'm sure you'll agree, it's a real pity that Fox and Sony have such a tight grip on these characters especially as the former are well known for making awful movies based on the Marvel superheroes they hold the rights to. I'd love to see Spider-Man teaming up with Daredevil or the Fantastic Four in a shared universe and find it hard to imagine just how amazing it would be to see characters like them given the big screen treatment they deserve from Marvel Studios! Be sure to share your thoughts on this in the usual place!

This really sucks for marvel. Smh. Fox totally screwed them. And spider man 3 was no masterpiece. Let's not even get on wolverine. Marvel has done an outstanding job in their own cinematic universe though. Somethings gotta give so that marvel can have their properties back.

@ joshw

this is a good news that disney want these charactors back.

disney & marvel studios vs sony & 20th century fox.

what a lawsuit this could be.

the thing i hate most about fox is the mistreatment of charactors i.e x-related,daredevil & the fantastic four.

for example fox own the rights to key charactors such as scarlett witch, quicksilver, namor & the original human torch.

all these charactors could come in handy for marvel with future products such as captain america & the avengers 2.

fox has no plans in using them but won't give them up for marvel to use in their movies.

this is why fox ceo's are a bunch of pricks.

& i hope their comic book movies fail.

Well at least Sony did make two great movies with Spider-man 1 & 2 and the remake is sounding like it could be really good hopefully. Fox on the other head is pretty much pimping the characters they have the rights to. They are doing an Ike Turner to their franchises lol

It would be epic to see these characters cross over into other Marvel movies! Sadly, I can't see it happening. I don't mind these other studios holding the rights as long as they make decent movies that are respectful to the source. Notice the word "respectful", I can handle liberties being taken and changes being made but when this hurts the original character and/or their universe it's gone too far.

X-Men is a prime example of consistant continuity screw ups! Characters were introduced in such a careless manner it literally destroyed not only their own but other characters backgrounds. This meant completely changing who the characters are!

That comment from FOX doesn't fill me with confidence either! If they were to pull themselves together, turn things around and make decent CBM's I'd have a lot of respect for them. But it's clear they don't give a rats ass about anything but money and control.

At best we can hope for respect for the source from these studios and maybe a little co-operation with Marvel in order for them to make the best possible movie. But even that looks like a far away dream.

Come on Disney, screw you Fox.. Id be happy with just getting Fantastic four back under somewhere sensible..

no point getting DD til ya get Spider-Man and lets face it the chances of ever getting X-Men or Spider-Man back is soo small.

Damn fox first they cancel firefly then they threaten to release dodge straight to DVD movies... ggrrr i hate you so much right now

You know how to get fox to give of up the rights to their characters? Do not go and see the movie, but people will still go. Im pretty sure people will be rushing to see Wolverine 2 and the new X-men movie so they will never give up those rights lol

want to give away a lot of characters

It's a great day in America when contracts are actually upheld. Marvel made these deals and Disney knew they existed when they bought marvel. Deal with it. All you people who keep saying give the rights back why the hell would they do that? Whether you think there bad movies or not they make a shitload of money and fox and Sony should do whatever it takes to keep them. I would expect nothing less

that's why i love disney and never bothered me they bought marvel. go disney! take the [frick]ing rights back! and sony controls 2, not 1 marvel property. ghost rider and spidey. [frick] fox! straight to dvd? x-men, daredevil and ff straight to dvd? ASSHOLES!!!!!!!!!! although, to tell the truth, if i was fox i wouldn't give the rights back. even if the movies are bad they make money. why give them back? would you? still, [frick] fox!

Fox didn't screw anyone, lol. Marvel sold them the rights fair and square. Its not Fox's fault. Its not like they stole them at gun point.

Marvel/Disney will likely never get rights to those characters back. The only way I could see it happen would be if they were purchased back and that multi-billion price tag is going to be higher than Disney will ever be willing to pay. Purchasing X-men or Spider-man rights back would easily cost more than they paid for Marvel.

You've pretty much summed up exactly what I was going to write here deadpool72! :) Marvel sold the rights because they were in financial difficulties and now we have to live with the consequences of having a studio happy to make dreadful movies as long as they make money. Apart from the last one, at least Sony are handling Spider-Man fairly decently...here's hoping Disney can at least claw back the rights to a few of the characters though!

Seriously, anyone thinking these characters will be treated better over at Disney is a little nuts. Fantastic 4 will turn into watered down family fun crap aimed at 8 year olds(Think No Ordinary Family). Do you really think Disney will let Daredevil go stomping around Hell's kitchen looking for a mass murderer name Bullseye? On top of that Disney is infamous for putting out high budget movies then following them up with less than amusing direct to video drivel that usually won't even budget the same actors to return.
The house of Mouse may look like a champion on paper but all of you will be whining when they go into full swing with some of your favorite darker characters

I agree, CorndogBurglar. They purchased the rights fair and square. Why would they even considering giving them back? They are extremely profitable.Of course they're going to hold on to the rights forever. It would be incredibly stupid not to.Especially because Disney wants them back so bad.

I'm not the biggest fan of Fox,I also don't share the ridiculous bias alot of other people do.But, I think it's a little underhanded for Disney to be attempting to find loopholes in the contracts when Fox clearly has a legal right to keep the properties for as long as they want.

fox and sony have failed with marvel movies in recent years, admitedly they had a good start but now there literally just puttin out garbage
personally i would be happy if sony and fox partnered with marvel studios and allowed them to have full creative control over the characters, whilst they still owned them; essentially allowing spiderman, and the x-men and daredevil and the fantastic four to be encorporated into the marvel studios movie universe and allowing the other studios to make money off them... admitedly its not an ideal situation, but hell if the fox and sony owned heroes get added into the avengers or something they'd be making a damn lot more money, and the films wouldn't suck
if that doesn't work out, heres hoping marvel studios get all the rights back quick time!
