Marvel Comics Executive Editor Tom Brevoort Announces Move From AVENGERS To The X-MEN

There's a big shake-up set to happen behind the scenes at Marvel Comics as Tom Brevoort announced that he's poised to jump ship from the Avengers titles to the publisher's X-Men line.

For 25 years, Tom Brevoort has been the guiding hand behind Marvel Comics' Avengers books and has shaped the modern version of the team, but at some point in the future, he'll be making the jump to the publisher's other powerhouse superhero team, as he'll be taking over the X-Men line of books.

A few days ago, Bevoort hinted at the big change on his Substack and how the change was at the behest of Marvel Entertainment President Dan Buckley.

"He told me he was going to ask me to do something that I wasn't going to want to do, and then proceeded through a combination of need, flattery, genuine admiration, duty and responsibility to get me to agree to take on the specific mission that he was hoping to entice me into… So August 1, 2023 was the day it all changed. We're not ready yet to say anything more about what this is or what's coming next, but it's all pretty exciting."

Due to a ton of speculation, Brevoort felt the need to make the announcement earlier than he planned- confirming the switch on his Facebook, hinting that it will be quite some time before the change is official and he replaces the current main X-Men editor, Jordan White.

"No, the big story is that, after a quarter of a century editing AVENGERS and its associated titles, I am going to be moving away from those characters and titles and instead stepping into the world of mutants. Yes, that’s right, I’m afraid that it’s true—I’m the X...This isn’t going to happen for a good long while yet—I still have a ton of stuff cooking in AVENGERS (including next year’s big crossover event series) that needs to be seen to completion."

What are the odds that the switch will happen when the X-Men make their Marvel Cinematic Universe debut? If Brevoort's run in the Avengers line aimed to synergize Earth's Mightiest Heroes with their big-screen counterparts, it stands to reason that the same will happen with the X-Men.

Stay tuned for future updates, as the switch likely won't occur before the current X-Men storyline centered around the Fall of Krakoa runs its course.

@AvalonX - He also helped shape the Bendis and Hickman eras. Your mileage may very on those, but both are generally seen as wins.

Wait, so this goof let Aaron make that mess? Or did he demand Aaron make that mess? Either way, this doesn't equal excitement. What becomes of Jordan? I assume more money and a better gig? (What's better than X-Men right now at marvel???)

@Crtdacct2say - The X-Men books right now are indecipherable unless you've been following along from the beginning of the Krakoa era.

@Crtdacct2say - He's been in that post for 25 years, he's bound to have some stinkers in there, but there's some good like Hickman's run.

Jordan D White isn't exactly flawless. He gets credit for the Krakoa Era AFTER Hickman left( which has been terrible since). I think people forget it was Hickman who created the Krakoa Era and was responsible for the good times in Krakoa.

If Marvel were smart, they'd let Hickman oversee all of Marvel Comics.

@Mother[frick]erJon - Yup. And to be fair to Breevort, he is the guy who put Hickman on both Fantastic Four and Avengers.

Guessing he's taking over once the Krakoa Era finishes next year and the X-books reset to the age old status-quo. I'd imagine the same is true for whoever takes over for him in Avengers next year, they'll get a reset to help them ease into the role. Marvel might go ahead and make it a "Marvel Now!" style event.
