ULTIMATE INVASION Trailer Sees The Illuminati Defeated As Marvel Comics Teases A Line-Wide Reboot

Writer Jonathan Hickman (Secret Wars) and artist Bryan Hitch (The Ultimates), will unveil a new vision of the Marvel Universe next month in Ultimate Invasion.

A four-part limited series, it's set to spark the beginning of a new age of Marvel Comics in the same vein as the groundbreaking Ultimate Comics line that defined the 2000s. This saga will see the Illuminati reunite to prevent the Maker, one of the few survivors of the fallen Ultimate Universe, from remaking his home universe.

Now, you can see that explosive confrontation for the first time in a trailer for June 14's Ultimate Invasion #1. Showing a twisted glimpse at the aftermath of the Illuminati’s dramatic failure, it appears we're getting a reality that combines both the traditional Earth-616 Marvel Universe and the Ultimate Universe which was dreamed up by Mark Millar, Brian Michael Bendis, Mark Bagley, Hitch, and more during the early 2000s.

"[Revisiting the idea of Ultimate Comics] couldn't be replicating or revisiting what Bryan did in the original Ultimates - creating a streamlined, modernized version that would eventually become the spine of the MCU," Hickman explains. "And it certainly couldn’t be what I did, which was a final chapter of a pre-existing universe."

"We also thought the very idea of Ultimate Comics needed to be inverted from what the original universe was - we wanted this to be something that could really only exist in the comic space: a new way of thinking about, and enjoying, a new version of the Marvel Universe. I’m pretty happy to say that it feels like we’ve accomplished those things and we’re very excited for everyone to get to read it."

Hitch adds, "It’s been more than 20 years since I started work on The Ultimates, a project that would have a big impact on my own career and beyond, so when Marvel came to me with the idea of revisiting the Ultimate Universe with the man who so brilliantly and spectacularly destroyed the last one, I was both feet in!"

Hickman is no stranger to creating alternate realities, and it's about time Marvel reveals what the heck The Maker (who was the Ultimate Reed Richards once upon a time) has been up to. As for Hitch, he established the tone of the Ultimate Universe alongside Miller and was the one who gave that world's Nick Fury the likeness of actor Samuel L. Jackson...which led to him being cast in the MCU!

Ultimate Invasion #1 goes on sale on June 14 (a week sooner than previously advertised!).

@TheBlueMorpho - He should take over Spider-Man from Wells.

Modernised version = More box ticking could end up losing loyal fans and they aren't exactly picking up new readers.

Wait, why bother with an event to reboot the ultimate universe? Why not just make a new modernized marvel universe and title it ultimate? That was the original premise of the ultimate line after all.

They should have rebooted the comics after Hickman's Secret Wars.

Marvel really does need a reboot.
Hear me out, put the pitchforks down LOL

YES, I know DC reboots their continuity frequently and that it can lead to disruptions regarding continuity…BUT it also compartmentalises certain events and certain storyline’s, providing hop on/hop off points for both readers and writers.

You have to admit how jarring and stupid it is that 30-something Spider-Man in present continuity has flashbacks to his teenage years…IN THE 1960’s 🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️

Heck they even referenced events in a 70’s comic in the recent Immortal Hulk storyline where he fought Captain America.

On that note, the current Ram V Hulk storyline just doesn’t make sense if it’s to be taken in continuity with Immortal Hulk. Regular reboots would free up characters and stories for creators too.

@GetsugaTensho22 -

Sliding time scale. There might be a reference to something that happened in the 70s but in the comic time it probably was only a couple of years ago,

@GetsugaTensho22 - Comics have always had a timeline that moves much slower than our real world.

If I remember correctly, when The Illuminati first appeared and they were collecting the Infinity Gems, they even mentioned how it had only been like 4 years since the original Infinity Gauntlet story's events. Which, for us had actually been decades.

A perfect way to look at how time moves in the comics is by using Kitty Pryde. When she first appeared she was 13 years old. But there was another milestone for her where it shows her 15th birthday. And if you look at all the events that happened between her first appearance at 13, and that 15th birthday, a bunch of major events had taken place, like the original Secret Wars, Infinity Gauntlet, and many others.

This series will suck if ultimate universe dies again

Didn't the Ultimate universe already get recreated by Al Ewing in Ultimates 2 vol. 2?

Why do we need an entire reboot? Why not just retcon what no longer works as per usual? I enjoy the MCU, but I don't want/need the comics resembling it AT ALL. Marvel really is its own enemy right now.

I am very afraid of why they are really doing this. Before the usual suspects jump all over me, its not like they havent tried multiple times to make a diverse MCU before. The problem, and why it always fails is because of the gender/race swapping. Now if they introduce new characters? Lets see some creativity here.
