ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #1 Reveals How Peter Parker Got His Powers And Delivers A Huge Twist - SPOILERS

Ultimate Spider-Man #1 went on sale today and it sets up a bold new status quo for Peter Parker as he finally becomes Spider-Man...at the ripe old age of 35! That's far from the only surprise, though!

Marvel Comics launched a new Ultimate Spider-Man #1 today and the series offers a very different take on the wall-crawler than what we've seen on both Earth-616 and Earth-1610 (the original Ultimate Universe).

A duplicate of Earth-616, this reality was corrupted by The Maker when he set out to stop the world's superheroes from ever being created. He later formed a secret council to rule the world from the shadows and when Tony Stark became Iron Lad and decided to bring the heroes back, The Maker's Council blew his headquarters up and framed the time-traveller for the death of thousands.

Among them were Aunt May, Norman Osborn, and Emily Osborn. However, in this reality, the 35-year-old Peter was never bitten by a radioactive spider and works at The Daily Bugle...alongside his Uncle Ben!

Yes, Ben Parker never died in this reality and is, in fact, good friends with J. Jonah Jameson. They both quit their jobs when The Kingpin takes over the board and decides to shift the spotlight away from what really happened during the attack (it's likely Fisk is also part of The Maker's Council).

That's not the only big change; Matt Murdock is now a Priest and Peter and Harry Osborn have only met a couple of times and aren't even friends.

Growing increasingly dissatisfied with his life, Peter talks to Mary Jane - who he's married to and has two children, Richard and May, with - and decides it's time to make a change.

We return to the previous night and learn Peter received a message and package from Iron Lad which were sent to him from six months in the future. Tony tell Peter he was supposed to be one of the world's greatest superheroes and reveals that, in six months, he will return and hopes to see Spider-Man and more restored heroes alongside him to "free the world."

Peter opens the orb sent to him; inside is the spider that was meant to bite him and a "picotech stealth suit" which looks an awful lot like a Symbiote. He realises he wants the life he lost, lets the spider bite him, and then suits up; with that, the world has regained Spider-Man!

It's one heck of a cliffhanger and we'll have to wait until next month's Ultimate Spider-Man #2 to see where this story goes next. It's a bold new take on the web-slinger, that's for sure, and one which promises an exciting new status quo for Peter Parker on the page moving forward.

um....what's the point of this change-up? Shouldn't this at the very least be an elseworlds story?
cyclopsprime
cyclopsprime - 1/10/2024, 10:05 AM
@lazlodaytona - it is an elseworlds story
Jackraow21
Jackraow21 - 1/10/2024, 10:07 AM
@lazlodaytona - It is. The Ultimate line is an alternate timeline. The old one was, and this new version of it is as well.

@lazlodaytona -

That's the point of the Ultimate Universe. To change it up. It is an "elseworlds"
Conquistador
Conquistador - 1/10/2024, 10:33 AM
@lazlodaytona - I don't think they should have called it "Ultimate.." though. As it's a whole new universe. Surely they could have come up with something more original instead of taking whatever steam was left over there.
lazlodaytona
lazlodaytona - 1/10/2024, 11:18 AM
@cyclopsprime - yeah, I actually should have figured that out. sorry.
I guess I was so floored with all the changes. I'm all for elseworlds but this is way too many changes for me.

@UniqNo - Did you read the comic. It very much seems like this IS the Ultimate universe. Someone has tampered with things, causing heroes not to exist.
Someone has tampered with the Ultimate universe.
Conquistador
Conquistador - 1/11/2024, 1:19 AM
@kazuma - Peter Parker already died in the ultimate universe. And I liked the fact that death in that ultimate universe meant something.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 1/11/2024, 9:41 AM
@UniqNo - It's a new Ultimate Universe. Like if they rebooted the Marvel Universe it would still be the Marvel Universe.

Or if they reboot the MCU with Secret Wars, It'll still be the MCU, but it will be the new MCU.

The new ultimate universe does have a different reality number though' It's 6160 instead of 1610.
Conquistador
Conquistador - 1/11/2024, 9:49 AM
@ObserverIO - Yeah but the reboot always then ends up being an alternate reality...think new 52.

With there being all the multiverse stuff judt make it its own thing...like i said i liked it that Peter Parker stayed dead in the last ultimate universe.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 1/11/2024, 11:17 AM
@UniqNo - But the New 52 was still called the DC Universe. In fact the DC Universe has rebooted several times and is always called the DC Universe.
And yet you're right, they do always become alternate realities, but the old Ultimate universe is already it's own alternate reality (Earth 1610) so it won't be effected by this new Ultimate universe (Earth 6160).

So it's all good. Everybody gets an Earth, but the title of Ultimate Universe has been passed down to this new version for a new generation.

@UniqNo - The Maker is trying to delete all heroes. Made sure Peter never got bit. SO this is a twisted version of the ultimate universe.
TheManWithoutFear
TheManWithoutFear - 1/10/2024, 10:01 AM
Josh you call The Maker 'The Marker' in the second sentence.

I kind of lost steam when i read that Matt Murdock is a priest in this reality. I'm not sure i can care about new realities but that's just me.

Having said that, i always get chills when they use the "go get 'em tiger" callback.

The original Ultimate universe was created to simplify and create something without years of continuity

I personally don't understand Johnathan Hickman's or Grant Morrison's writing
AvalonX
AvalonX - 1/10/2024, 10:25 AM
@0bstreperous - Hickman is a good writer but his stories have gotten more ..ambitious each time. I think every run he does gets worse. His FF run was legendary. He Avengers run was good, not great. He bailed on his over abitious X-men run which I didn't like at all and I think this Ultimate run is very average. He only writes epics but it doesnt leave a lot for character development. the FF was good because he had a smaller character base. His Avengers were already kind of defined. In X-men, he introduced way too many characters while bringing every dead mutant back. Then he changed their personalities so they weren't like they were before even implying Jean, Scott and Logan were in a 3 way relationship (and at one point implying Logan was gay for scott). This Ultimates run just isnt as interesting because it doesn't matter. He'll leave in a year and it will die.

@AvalonX - still don't understand anything he writes I've tried to read his new avengers
MartianManHuntr
MartianManHuntr - 1/10/2024, 10:46 AM
@AvalonX - This is most important thing: he will leave it in middle. This is why all of his stories end with a whimper.
AvalonX
AvalonX - 1/10/2024, 1:37 PM
@0bstreperous - Yeah he is overly complex and he struggles with execution. I think thats why he has a habit of quitting. He left the X-men in shambles. They are trying to course correct it not but I dont expect him to stick around with this one. I get that they have him an entire universe to work with but I'm not invested enough in an elseworlds story to really keep track. I dont like this version of Avengers at all. Reed is Doom, Stark (becomes Kang). Its like changing things to change it.
AvalonX
AvalonX - 1/10/2024, 1:39 PM
@MartianManHuntr - Right. He great at large complex concepts, less great on executing them. Especially when he has to juggle a lot of balls. They are about to wipe away the Krakoa era. Its hard to even know who the hell anyone is because they introduces so many new characters. The entire Mars plot is just too out there for me to follow and everytime you pick up a book, it seems like its new characters.

Title: Spider-Man 1 reveals how Peter Parker got his powers and delivers a huge twist

Me: he gets bitten by a radioactive spider?

Article: he gets bitten by a radioactive spider. From the future!

Anyway, I actually quite like the idea of an older Peter Parker having to figure out his powers. Not a huge twist, but it changes it up from the usual teenager or young adult having to do so.

Also, I wouldn't mind seeing a young Tony Stark as Iron Lad in the MCU.
RedFury
RedFury - 1/10/2024, 10:46 AM
@bkmeijer1 - it seems like a fresh enough take to garner some interest that's for sure. It'll be interesting to see how it all evolves.

BTW your "from the future!" Reminds me of Jon Stewart in Half Baked when he's like "yeah, but have you ever seen Scent of a Woman - On Weeeed?" Lol
MartianManHuntr
MartianManHuntr - 1/10/2024, 10:48 AM
@bkmeijer1 - That's actually great but if this Spider-Man also starts cracking jokes then nothing else had changed other than his age. So we will see.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 1/10/2024, 11:23 AM
@MartianManHuntr - true. If he's all the same but older, nothing's changed. Do hope this version is different though
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 1/11/2024, 9:47 AM
@MartianManHuntr - If nothing has changed except he's older, married to MJ and has children, then it's exactly what people have been wanting from 616 since at least OMD.
MartianManHuntr
MartianManHuntr - 1/11/2024, 10:43 AM
@ObserverIO - Absolutely. Let him mature, at least I don't think there is any future keeping him in high school.

I thought he was going to get impregnated by the spider to get his powers.

Interesting premise, and sounds like it could be cool if it leads to something when iron lad returns in six months, and could be cool to see iron lad or peter recruit Murdock and others, giving them their missing powers etc

Maybe the twist will be that he identifies as Spider-woman?
