Since launching in January, Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto's Ultimate Spider-Man has become one of Marvel Comics' biggest hits. The first couple of issues have received multiple printings as new and old readers alike dive into the wall-crawler's bold new origin story.

The comic has introduced devoted family man Peter Parker, his wife Mary Jane Watson-Parker, their two precocious kids, and Peter's beloved Uncle Ben. Now, in April, Ultimate Spider-Man #4 will debut another iconic member of the Spidey family: Gwen Stacy.

With a twist, of course.

In this new universe, Gwen never met a tragic fate. Instead, she married Harry Osborn and now co-runs Oscorp Industries. We'll learn more about this ambitious power couple when the Parkers and Osborns go on a double date.

Amidst cocktails, small talk is quickly dispersed as this fearless foursome discusses and exposes the dark corruption that shaped their world. Little do they all know that the two men at the table have already taken matters into their own hands by suiting up as the vigilantes Spider-Man and Green Goblin.

You can check out the new Ultimate Universe's take on Marvel's "It Girl" on a new Ultimate Spider-Man #4 variant cover by Mateus Manhanini as well as never-before-seen interior artwork from guest artist David Messina.

Messina will bring his acclaimed style to the title for two issues before series artist Checchetto returns with June's Ultimate Spider-Man #6.

In the regular Marvel Universe, Gwen Stacy was introduced by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in 1965's Amazing Spider-Man #31. Later becoming Peter's girlfriend, she was the teenager's first love; unfortunately, their relationship ended in tragedy when the Green Goblin threw Gwen off a bridge. Despite Spider-Man's effort to save her, she dies when his attempt to catch her with webbing inadvertently snaps her neck.

In recent years, the character has been reinvented, with an alternate reality version suiting up as the spectacular Spider-Gwen (a.k.a. Ghost Spider or Spider-Woman). She's since made the leap to Earth-616 but is depicted as being in her late teens/early 20s, meaning there's no chance of romance between her and Peter. The hero was played by Hailee Steinfeld in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

So the twist is she's a different character wearing a Gwen Stacy skin. Ok.

@Origame - Nothing issue. Gwen wasn't much of a character before she died either way.

@Origame - What you said is also according to you.

@dagenspear - ...no its not, because you're justification acknowledged that she isn't the same character. You're more than welcome to like the change, but it's undeniable this isn't the same character she was before.

@Origame - The character who is now married to Harry Osborn and the CEO of his company is not the same character as Harry's Osborn's girlfriend in the original comics?

We know very little about this new version of Gwen. So far the only difference seems to be What If she didn't die.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 3/20/2024, 5:24 AM
*co-CEO with Harry
Origame
Origame - 3/20/2024, 5:29 AM
@ObserverIO - ...Gwen Stacy was Peter's girlfriend. Literally his first love interest, and was basically his lois lane until her death.

Plus, she's always been portrayed as a regular everyday student. So yes, making her a ceo is a massive change.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 3/20/2024, 5:40 AM
@Origame - She was also Harry's girlfriend. He was also a regular everyday student. Him becoming co-CEO is not a massive change because he's the son of Norman Osborn. Her being co-CEO is also not a massive change because she's his wife. She's not with Peter, because Peter is with MJ. It all makes perfect sense.

This is completely in keeping with those original comics.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 3/20/2024, 5:40 AM
@Origame - Also, Gwen Stacy was not his first love interest. He was goo goo for Liz and then started a relationship with Betty Brant.
Origame
Origame - 3/20/2024, 6:38 AM
@ObserverIO - wives of ceos don't normally become co ceos.
Origame
Origame - 3/20/2024, 6:39 AM
@ObserverIO - no, Gwen was before both of them.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 3/20/2024, 6:58 AM
@Origame - Do sons of CEOs normally become CEOs? This is his father's business. It's a family business. And in family businesses, sons and daughters and son-in-laws and daughter-in-laws do become CEOs.

Also, they may have retconned Gwen to have been his first love, I don't know, but in the original comics he had a crush on Liz and then was very much in love with Betty.
Origame
Origame - 3/20/2024, 7:55 AM
@ObserverIO - ...it's called the family business.

And crush being the keyword.
dagenspear
dagenspear - 3/21/2024, 1:18 AM
@Origame - Yes, it is. I think my reasoning was that it's irrelevant because you can't really change a character when there barely was one. I think that's just introducing new elements for another version of the character, rather the more overblown, to me, perspective that she's a new character entirely. There may be room to find out how much they may have changed with Gwen, just from this article, as far as I remember reading. If a character has a job and a different love interest, are they suddenly not the character they were? I don't necessarily think that, for this type of character. In a different universe, Gwen can still be Gwen, and have some different or new characteristics.
Origame
Origame - 3/21/2024, 4:55 AM
@dagenspear - and I'm saying she barely had a character according to you. Plenty of people did see a character with her.

And you can't even say this is the same character when you can't even comprehend the character she originally was.
dagenspear
dagenspear - 3/21/2024, 3:18 PM
@Origame - And that would be according to them and you.
Origame
Origame - 3/21/2024, 3:24 PM
@dagenspear - well considering this is a character that's lived on for decades, I'd say this is more factual than you just saying there's nothing to her.

Cool. I'm still down with seeing more alternate takes on Gwen from other worlds. Still digging the vibes of this new Ultimate relaunch too. OG Ultimate Spider-man is still one of my favorite runs, so if this manages to recapture even a fraction of that magic, I'll be more than happy.

@KaptainKhaos - Since you brought it up: People with 'woke' beliefs experience higher anxiety and periods of depression according to a new study published in the Scandinavian Journal of Psychology. The study involved nearly 6,000 participants in Finland, including university faculty, students and the general public. 🧐

@SuperiorHeckler - And yet Finland, a completely socialist and woke nation by american standards, was just elected the happiest country in the world seventh year in a row. (https://edition.cnn.com/travel/worlds-happiest-countries-2024-wellness/index.html)
Also, looking at the study you mentioned, some of the questions were rather vague. Like wouldn't be comfortable answering to them without the opportunity to further explaining the meaning behind my answers.
