Launching in March, Ultimate X-Men is heading our way from Peach Momoko and will see the visionary writer and artist introduce a new generation of X-Men for the bold new Ultimate Universe created by Jonathan Hickman.

In Ultimate Universe #1, we got a glimpse of Momoko's take on mutantkind in a special two-page Ultimate X-Men prelude story. Since then, we've learned this series will kick things off with fan-favourite X-Man Hisako Ichiki, a.k.a. Armor, along with Maystorm, the Storm-inspired character the famed artist created for last year's popular "New Champions Variant Cover" program.

In the series, Hisako Ichiki is a teenage girl who just wants to live a normal life - go to school, hang out with her friends, ignore the political strife broiling over after the events of Ultimate Invasion - but life has other plans for her.

Ultimate X-Men will take us to Japan where urban legends have sprung to life and brought some unusual new powers with them. We'll then meet Armor, Maystorm, and a group of new Ultimate X-Men the likes of which we've never seen before,

"At first, I was worried about being chosen for such an important project, but the more I draw and write the series, the more confident I am with my own vision of Ultimate X-Men," Momoko recently revealed. "Ultimate X-Men isn't directly influenced by classic X-Men stories. I like to believe C.B. [Cebulski] and Jonathan Hickman chose me because they wanted something completely new and different."

"I was very surprised, excited and happy that Marvel allowed me to introduce Maystorm in Ultimate X-Men," she added. "She was made only for the New Champions variant cover program. I really liked her design and wanted to tell her story...but didn’t think I would get the opportunity this fast!"

Marvel Comics will be taking mutants in a very different direction with this series. It not being a simple retread of the classic X-Men story we all know and love is no bad thing, though, especially as the original Ultimate X-Men series already retold their story with a modern spin.

Maystorm's wearing X-Men, Avengers and Captain America buttons. Are the Avengers a thing in this universe? If anything it should be the Ultimates.
