X-FACTOR: Marvel Comics Shares First Look And Roster Of Government-Funded Mutant Team

Described as a "celebrity propaganda machine," the new X-Factor will launch this summer and features a government-backed team of mutants led by Angel and Havok. You can find more details after the jump...

While the X-Men's mission forces them to work outside the law, certain teams have found ways to fight for mutant rights within the system as officially sanctioned strike forces.

In the upcoming "From the Ashes" era, that tradition continues in a new volume of X-Factor from Eisner-winning writer Mark Russell (Fantastic Four: Life Story) and acclaimed X-Men artist Bob Quinn (Captain America).

Formed by the government in response to a post-Krakoa outbreak of mutant paramilitary, ops squads, and mercenary teams, X-Factor will be co-led by Angel and Havok and include recruits like Pyro, Frenzy, Feral, and more.

Part special agents for missions that require an arsenal of superpowers and part celebrity propaganda machine, X-Factor will wage war against emerging factions like the Mutant Underground and X-Term. Whether they believe in their actions or are just doing it for a check, the members of X-Factor are no fools when it comes to shady politics.

However, as hidden agendas rear their ugly head, they'll fight against the dark consequences and disastrous public opinion from the inside.

"The thing I've always loved about the X-Men is that they're characters first, superheroes second," Russell shared today. "So being able to write characters like Havok and Angel and Frenzy in a post-Krakoa reality is an opportunity to write about what I really care about, which is how do we help each other survive the apathy of the world we live in?"

Quinn adds, "It’s so exciting to be back and drawing mutants in the X-Men universe again, and doubly exciting to work with Mark again. To my mind, Mark’s mix of humor and ability to shine a light on the peculiarities of modern society make him the perfect writer to tackle the relaunch of X-Factor. Drawing this team and every unexpected twist and turn of the story has been a blast so far."

Are they mutant sell-outs or mutant role models? You can be the judge when the series launches this August...for now, check out Greg Land's cover for X-Factor #1 below.

X-factor was quite good when it came out, some important characters were introduced in that title Apocalypse and his Four Horsemen plus Archangel.

@marvel72 - X-Factor was the last of the "X-books" that I dropped. It was always something special.

@marvel72 - I actually have a mint "X-Factor #1" from the 80s ('89 if I recall correctly). I have it sealed in one of those hyperbaricc chambers that the dude from "Zoolander" has for his hand. FWIW You can get them on Etsy.com.

@clintthahamster - I thought it was a good way of keeping the original five members going in the comics, also I love Walt Simonson art.

@StSteven - It was a great title man, I need to pick up a copy of X-factor #1 graded.

@marvel72 - Yeah, my comics collection is relatively small but I tended to focus on "#1"s, so like I have X-Factor #1, X-Men #1, Spawn #1, etc. Dig this: I even have a #1 version of a comic called "The Prez" about a high school kid who becomes the President of the US. My favorite though has to be the X-Men run with Claremont and Lee on art. To me at the time (and still now) it just doesn't get any better. I think that I have like 5 or 6 copies of "X-Men" #1 with all the different covers and such. Good times. 😊

@StSteven - Sounds like a pretty cool collection,yeah can't beat 90s X-Men,well the 80s was great but it didn't have Jim Lee.

@marvel72 - Yeah, it cold be better but I think that one of these days when I have the time and the means I'd like to go back and collect some of the most famous #1s, like for Spidey, Uncanny X-Men, FF, etc. Same with my Transformers collection. I have a HUGE collection of Transformers ('84 - present) but I think that ultimately I'd like to just have all the OG G1 figures MISB. I recently found a vintage toy shop in my area where I was able to get the OG Technobots carded (not quite MISB but good enough), and there are others where I can get the larger figures like OG Prowl and such but they're like $1500 so I'm not exactly jumping on that right now.

Either way, yeah I'm a sucker for collecting MISB versions of stuff that I had as a kid, as naturally I didn't realize their potential value at the time and just wanted to play with/read them. I told my wife that when I die I want to be buried with all of it. ALL OF IT. If she has to buy 2 or 3 plots, so be it. ALL OF IT. 😉

The premise reminds me of "the boys"
Good way to differentiate this team in the modern era from other X-teams and this can be a good mold for their eventual MCU debut

I'm liking the idea of Marvel transitioning away from everyone fearing mutants and robots trying to wipe them out. Being going on for decades now. Natural transition for mutants to be part of a global arms race for powers.

Down for it! I tend to enjoy X-Factor runs and am always down for more Havok

Someone explain to me the appeal of Pyro, especially since there are many other mutants with heat/fire powers. I was perplexed that of all possible characters, Pyro made the jump to live action in the Fox/Singer movies before so many other epic characters (not a dig against the actor, just the choice). What aspect of keeps him relevant?

So a government sponsored team with 3 known (reformed?) villians on it. Hope they have a good PR team.
