X-MEN: Marvel Comics Reportedly Tried To Poach DC's Jim Lee To Take Charge Of Upcoming Relaunch

With the X-Men's Krakoa era starting to wind down, Marvel Comics has plans to relaunch the mutant team. According to Rob Liefeld, that involved trying to bring DC Comics' Jim Lee back into the fold...

Jim Lee's X-Men run is rightly considered one of the most influential and iconic periods in the history of the mutant team's comic book series. In 1991, Lee, along with writer Chris Claremont, took over Uncanny X-Men starting with issue #248 and remained on the series until issue #280.

X-Men #1 later became the best-selling comic book of all time, though Lee eventually left Marvel Comics to help found Image. These days, he's DC Comics' Publisher and CCO, making him a pivotal part of what we see from those characters on the page and screen.

The X-Men are currently undergoing some major changes thanks to the end of the Krakoa Era and while we don't currently know what's next for the team, it sounds like Marvel was hoping Lee might take charge of the planned relaunch!

Talking on his Robservations With Rob Liefeld podcast, the Deadpool co-creator revealed that Marvel approached Lee about leaving DC last Spring and wanted him to illustrate the next X-Men series. He'd have also been enlisted to shape the franchise moving forward and we'd be shocked if he wasn't eyed for some sort of executive role to boot.

For any number of reasons, Lee chose to remain with DC. Still, we can't help thinking about how exciting the legendary artist's Marvel return would have been for both the X-Men and fans.

Marvel Comics has also shared the first official details about Free Comic Book Day 2024: Blood Hunt/X-Men #1, an upcoming one-shot which will offer our first glimpse at the team's post-Krakoa status quo. You can read more about that below.

I wonder why Lee really turned Marvel down....

OT: we had the latest echo trailer. They're pulling a "the marvels" now and having half the trailer be clips from other projects. Ffs, most of those clips are from specifically the Netflix shows.

@Origame - It's going to be bad, I have a feeling.

Releasing it in January
Releasing all episodes at once
Cutting the number of episodes down
Echo not being a popular character
Adding Daredevil and Kingpin
Reshoots and editing it so it's watchable
Marvel fatigue
Releasing a scene of Daredevil Vs Echo

@marvel72 - you forgot just how bad of a fight scene that was. This'll be a train wreck.

@Origame - It shocked me that some people said it was a good fight scene on par with the Netflix shows.

@mountainman - I don't remember Netflix having kicks stop mid air 🤣

Most people thought it had to be a rehearsal 🤣

@Origame - It looks like they are doing some weird dance as opposed to fighting. Truly awful.

@mountainman - I watched it slowed down, she reacts to punches too soon or they miss each other by miles, the shotgun bit is one of the worse.

The worst thing Marvel and DC did was have exclusivity contracts.

@Reeds2Much - It's pretty standard for most companies to not allow dual employment within a competing industry. Plus, it makes zero sense that the CCO of DC would work for Marvel at the same time.

@Himura - Yeah, in the financial industry I know it's pretty harsh when you go from company to another in the same field. For example I quit working for one insurance company to go work for another (I'm a Data Scientist) and you don't even get to put in 2 weeks notice, it's more like 2 hours. As soon as you tell your supervisor that you're leaving and where you're going you have to pack up your shit, hand over your laptop, and are escorted out of the building by Security. So definitely NO working for competing interests there. I'm pretty sure that I'm not allowed to free-lance as a consultant on the side and every time I give a presentation at my prior university on what I do it has to go through screening to make sure that I'm saying anything I shouldn't be. Pretty strict.

@Reeds2Much -

Happy birthday, fellow doctah-san.

Toei treated you good...

...really good!

@DrReedRichards - I was surprised to see this, since we just got a pair of new songs so recently. Then I watched the episode and wasn't expecting them to already be airing the new songs. Though I do especially like the new outro, since it kind of reminds me of Memories ... which is weird to see now that I wrote out the thought.

New episode's art style is all over the place so I'm not quite sure how I feel about it. I think it's the animation I need to get used to, it's kind of feels inconsistent. On that note I also thought we'd be in a filler arc, but nope. Straight into the main story.

Between this, Dungeon Meshi, my new Necronomnomnom cook book, and this message it's been a great start for this, the holiest of holy days. So thank you.

Liefeld is an absolute liar.

He's basically in charge of DC comics. Why would he downgrade to work on a singular property?
