In this period piece by J.M. Thakar, Jonathan Blitstein, with art by Jackie Diaz “Bar Code”gives the appearance of a classic 50’s Sci-Fi film. After a brief history lesson about the state of the world during WW2, we find ourselves on the island of “Drake” at the PJI military base where we meet LT. General Martin. What was believed to be a Japanese attack was actually an asteroid. After a near death accident with LT. Martin and Jones. The’ve finally made it to the home of a man named Dr. Verma, who may hold the key to the answer of what’s taking place. What’s great about this first issue is the character foreshadowing. Dr. Verma is just beginning to embark on a journey that will forever change him, Im actually more interested to see if he will go from a naive doctor with good intentions, to someone jaded by there experiences.
What’s more interesting about this story is actually the art work. The mix of photo realistic elements and primed coloring give the story a very old world feeling. It resembles the experimental art style Marvel did in the early 2000‘s. Over all, it’s a works well with the story.
What I also really enjoyed about this first issue is, it also feels like a prelude to a Indiana Jones type of adventure story particularly the temple of doom. The reason being is because of the mysterious effects of the asteroids. If you like period pieces, with HG Wells style of Sci-Fi then this is the story for you. I will like to see what comes next, as far as Im concerned there off to a good start.
