5 Announcements Which Would Make The 2016 San Diego Comic-Con The Best Ever

We're just a couple of weeks away from this year's SDCC, and should these five Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Films/TV announcements happen, it would without a doubt be the best one ever...

The past couple of Comic-Cons have been somewhat underwhelming, especially with Marvel Studios deciding to sit them out. They've also been fairly light on huge announcements since that big Batman v Superman reveal a while back, but the signs are pointing to this year's effort being a little different especially with Marvel and DC Films both looking to try and steal the show and emerge the victor.

Forget trailers and B-Roll footage though; what will really make this year's Comic-Con one to remember (and arguably the best yet) would be the announcements listed below. Some of these stand a greater chance of happening than others, but chances are that at least a couple will become a reality in San Diego later this months. Which ones? Time will tell, but keep your fingers crossed for them all...

5. Green Lantern Will Be Played By...

loading

By now, it's become apparent that Green Lantern won't appear in Justice League...hasn't it? Three actresses are currently being considered for the role of Iris West, and whoever is chosen will end up making a cameo there, so there's definitely still time for Hal Jordan to find his way into next November's superhero ensemble (bear in mind that rumours initially pointed to him arriving on Earth near the end of the movie to warn the League of an incoming threat).

We know that Green Lantern Corps will revolve around two or three human members of the outer space police force, so one or all of them being brought out in Hall H after the room is bathed in a green glow would be nothing short of incredible. This character hasn't been treated well by the studio as they seem reluctant to do anything with him after that 2011 disaster, but new DC Films boss Geoff Johns is a huge fan and spent years working on the hero, so don't be surprised if this actually happens in San Diego.

4. Spider-Man: Homecoming Characters Revealed

loading

The cast of Spider-Man: Homecoming seemingly adds at least two or three new actors a week, and despite the fact that production is well under way in Atlanta, Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures still haven't revealed an official cast list with the characters and a vague plot synopsis (which the former did for Thor: Ragnarok ages ago despite shooting only starting this past week). As a result, it's now become hard not to imagine some light being shed on this one in Hall H later this month.

Waiting until Comic-Con could backfire as the news of who is who in this movie could very well be buried by bigger stories, but a piece of concept art depicting the wall-crawler taking on The Vulture along with some major new casting additions - like who is playing the beloved J. Jonah Jameson for example - would go a very long way in ensuring that everyone ends the weekend talking about Spider-Man: Homecoming and nothing else. As a result, 2016 could very well be Spidey's year at the event.

3. The Flash Will Face Gorilla Grodd In Season 3

loading

Marvel TV may be bringing Luke Cage to Comic-Con, but Warner Bros. TV has Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Gotham, Supergirl, iZombie, and almost countless others to show off over the weekend. A surprising number of details about Arrow have been revealed in recent weeks as the series has added new cast members, so it's hard to imagine too many big shockers there, but other than one or two notable additions, things have been quite on The Flash front.

These panels often spill the beans on the status quo and big bads (Zoom was revealed in a teaser for seaosn two last year), so I would expect that to also be the case later this month, and who better than to take on the Fastest Man Alive than Gorilla Grodd? The show has done him justice on a number of occasions, and after two years of speedsters trying to steal Barry's powers to get faster, we desperately need a villain who is drastically different. A psychic CGI gorilla hell bent on taking over Central City fits the bill then!

2. Captain Marvel Gets A Star And Director

loading

Looking over Marvel's Phase 3 slate, Captain Marvel stands out as the movie we're in desperate need of an announcement for. Sure, there are plenty of other roles to be filled in the MCU, but it's about damn this highly anticipated release gets a leading lady and director. Oscar winning actress Brie Larson (Room) has emerged as the frontrunner, so her briefly showing up in Hall H to confirm that would be great.

If we just so happen to get some concept art to go along with it, then all the better, especially as that's more than feasible seeing as whoever plays Captain Marvel will actually be needed as soon as this Fall for Avengers: Infinity War. Marvel Studios has been looking for a director for a while now too, so it really doesn't feel like a stretch for her identity to also be revealed during their Hall H panel after footage from Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 and Doctor Strange is shown off. We'll have to wait and see, but if they make just one big announcement, this should definitely be it.

1. The Batman (And Man Of Steel 2) Is Made Official

loading

I'm pretty sure that big news on The Batman has been rumoured for the past two Comic-Cons, but 2016 being the year we finally get a release date (and possibly even some vague story details) would be amazing. We obviously already know that the movie is happening as it's been made official - or as "official" as any announcement can be without a press release - by everyone from Warner Bros. studios execs to Ben Affleck and Geoff Johns.

However, there's a big difference between that and Affleck coming out to a thunderous applaus in Hall H to reveal the release date and perhaps even who the villain will be. Hell, send Jared Leto out there and have them do a UFC style stare down if that's what it takes, because while Suicide Squad may look great, the studio still desperately needs the sort of positive buzz an announcement like this would generate for them. Throw in some Justice League concept art, and the DC Films Universe could very well end up winning Comic-Con.

Which of these announcements would you most like to see made during this year's San Diego Comic-Con? Do you have any suggestions of your own? As always, weigh in on that below.
