James Gunn On Including Taserface And Revealing The Identity Of Peter Quill's Father

Following the Marvel Studios panel last night, we have tons of backstage interviews to sort through and pick apart for additional intel besides what was unveiled on stage.  Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gun spoke with Comicbook.com about why now was the right time to reveal that Ego the Living Planet is Peter Quill's father in the MCU.  "Quite frankly, we knew people were going to figure it out eventually.  We were going to have to eventually test the movie and release trailers and I thought it was better to take the reigns into our own hands and reveal Ego to the public.  I also think it sends a message that this movie isn't about the tease of, 'Oh my god, you have to go find out who Peter Quill's dad is.'  It really is about the story of the relationship these characters have.  You learn that Ego is his father pretty close to the beginning of the film.  So we're not giving some big spoiler away."

As far as why Taserface was in the film, Gun explained, "When I first got Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 [backin 2012], I posted a picture of Taserface [to Facebook], the dumbest character of all time.  I posted a picture of him and I said, 'This is gonna be the star of Guardians of the Galaxy!' and people were laughing and making fun of him and I made this big joke ,but some people took it seriously so I had to come clean and say 'No, no, I'm not really gonna do that.' However, I think in this movie, we needed the head of the Ravagers to be a real dumbass [but at the same time] a very powerful guy. So I decided he named himself and called himself Taserface."

I think it would have been better/funnier if Ego was just some random thing they find out in space rather than Peter's father. It'd be like, "Yep, there's just a giant talking planet out in space. Why does it exist? [frick] you, it just does!"

I hope there is a good reason he didn't just come and get Quill himself but hire the ravagers to.

Ego prime hasn't been in the comics since 1990, so with this news that's about to change.
