Marvel Studios And Warner Bros.' DC Films Will Both Skip SDCC@Home For The Second Year In A Row

With just weeks to go until Comic-Con@Home takes place for the second year in a row, it's been confirmed that both Marvel Studios and Warner Bros.' DC Films division will give the virtual event a miss.

Warner Bros. skipped the San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, but Marvel Studios was there with a huge presentation that saw them reveal much of their Phase 4 slate. However, the pandemic meant neither studio participated in 2020's "Comic-Con@Home," deciding to hold their own virtual events instead.

Warner Bros. went with the well-received DC FanDome, while Marvel Studios' slate was highlighted during Disney's impressive Investor Day. As a result, you probably won't be surprised to learn that they're both planning to give this year's virtual Comic-Con a miss as well. Last year's event drew little attention from the media and featured very few talking points.

There's still no word on whether Sony Pictures will take the likes of Spider-Man: No Way Home and Venom: Let There Be Carnage to the event, but we wouldn't bank on it.

DC FanDome means Warner Bros. doesn't need to fork out a huge amount of money to attend Comic-Con either virtually or in person, and it really does feel like the days of massive Hall H panels are nearing an end. They could simply end up being a casualty of the pandemic, and if DC FanDome and Disney's Investor Day proved anything, it's that a Hall H panel isn't needed to build hype for a movie.

Given how hugely successful superhero movies have become in recent years, the days of having to create goodwill at events like Comic-Con with early sneak peeks do feel like a thing of the past, and a shift to online global events feels like a step in the right direction.

Comic-Con@Home takes place between July 23 - 25, while an in-person version takes place November 26 - 28. There's already been a lot of complaints about it taking that Thanksgiving weekend, with many journalists, studios, and talents said to be uninterested in spending the holidays at the event.

We'll let you know if Marvel Studios and Warner Bros. decide to attend.

Makes sense. Last year proved both studios could have successful shows on their own. I do wonder how this is going to impact SDCC going forward once it's safe to hold in person again.

Once upon a long time ago Comic Book conventions were strictly about (of all things, the horror) actual comic books and toy collectibles not so much movies or TV shows. Might be heading back in that direction again. Time will tell.

Eh, there's DC Fandome, so at least there's something.

Too bad it's around October and not August this year, meaning AFTER my summer siesta, but f*ck it, i'll take some days. :P

@Doomsday8888 - I was just about to say the same thing that WB and DC have said they will be doing Fandome this year as well

@Doomsday8888 - Is Fandome an in-person event? I thought it was virtual.

Maybe now SDCC will go back to being about comics and collectibles once again.

If the movies dissappear from SDCC, then I guess it will once more become just a convention out of the public eye and just for the actual comic book fans

As much as I enjoy (watching) SDCC, Disney’s Investor Day seemed to suit me better- it seemed so much more concise. So while I am disappointed about the former, I’m looking forward to the latter.

This makes sense. As a comic book lover, who admittedly has never been to SDCC, it seems that Hall H just takes up the entire weekend's publicity. No one is covering anything else that's happening that weekend except for what's happening in Hall H.

And ComicCon is supposed to be so much more than what's happening in that hall. It's supposed to be about comics. And the love of comics. And meeting the artists and writers who bring those beloved characters to life. And going to panels to get information about this that or the other or just to fanboy/girl (and all the blessed souls in between those binaries) out about an artist or writer or even an actor/actress from a movie or tv show you love when you meet them and get them to sign your lunchbox. And of spending your rent money and your Uber ride home and not giving a flip because you needed that first issue of that comic that you love. That's what comic cons are supposed to be about. Anything else is superfluous.

Seems to me SDCC has become all about the superfluous (it's their bread and butter, who can blame them?) and will need to readjust because Hall H is done.

Back in the day I would've loved to go to the US (I'm from the UK) and attend SDCC and experience some of that huge hype first hand rather than days later through dodgy YouTube footage but it seems like those days are behind us now between the Pandemic and both Marvel and DC being big enough to just do their own thing.

Back in the day (centuries ago...), attending SDCC was a dream of mine. As the event spiraled out-of-control, it began to seem more like a nightmare. Being one in a crowd of 130K was daunting enough pre-COVID, but now it seems incredibly reckless.

Nonetheless, the news that used to emerge from Hall H was always exciting, despite the frustration of never being allowed to see the trailers and footage. I'll miss the hype just a little. The announcements from Investors' Day were more than enough to tide me over.
