SDCC '16: The 10 Biggest Reveals From Marvel And WB

Another San Diego Comic-Con has come and gone. After a rather tepid start earlier in the week, the annual fanboy convention kicked things into high gear with massive reveals from WB and Marvel Studios.

And just like that....SDCC 2016 is over.  Arguably the best time of the year to be a fanboy, this year's annual comic book convention brought us plenty of juicy new details on what's happening in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, DCEU and DCTV universe.  The only thing missing this year was news from 20th Century Fox on what's happening with the X-Men franchise and news from Lucasfilm on what they're planning for Episode VIII and the standalone anthology films.   But perhaps that would have been too much for our inner geeks to handle after receiving teaser trailers for Iron Fist, Luke Cage and The Defenders. Not to mention we also had a ton of information revealed on Doctor Strange, Thor: Ragnarok, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Black Panther and Captain Marvel.  However, many fans believe Warner Bros. "won SDCC"  by releasing trailers for Wonder Woman and Justice League online, immediately following their respective panels.  We also were treated to tons of intel on the direction of The CW's DCTV Universe, with new trailers for Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl.

Overall, this was definitely a better SDCC than last year, where Marvel decided not to attend in favor of Disney's  D23 Expo.   Last year, the focus was on Deadpool, X-Men: Apocalypse, Fantastic Four, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.  Not a bad line-up per se,   but it doesn't come close to the staggering amount of awesomeness unleashed during this year's convention.  But what was your favorite reveal this year? Was it the Justice League trailer? Or maybe it was the first Wonder Woman footage?
Did the Marvel Netflix series jump to the top of your Most Anticipated list following the teaser trailers?  Perhaps the reveal of Captain Marvel or the reveals for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 spoke the most to your inner fanboy or fangirl? If you haven't been keeping up with all the news announced this weekend, here are the Top 10 reveals from this year's SDCC.

10. Katie Cassidy Is Now A Regular Across All The CW DCTV Shows

There were quite a few Arrow fans who completely believed that Katie Cassidy's time on Arrow as Black Canary was over.  However, the audience in Ballroom 20 was absolutely stunned when it was announced that Cassidy had signed a deal similar to the contracts given to John Barrowman and Wentworth Miller to appear as a series regular on all of The CW's DCTV programs.   But will she appear as Black Canary or Black Siren?

If you're still holding out hope that Arrow can right the 'ship,' the return of Cassidy should come as very pleasing news.  Wth Arrow entering what could very well be its final season, perhaps Stephen Amell's Oliver Queen will find his way back to Laurel arms before the season wraps?

9. Daredevil Renewed For Season 3

Typically, the Netflix Marvel TV shows are renewed for another season just a few days after the new season drops.  In the case of Daredevil, we've had to wait a little bit for confirmation of a third season.  This led many fans to assume that Daredevil might not continue after The Defenders.  In fact, there were rumors that Marvel and Netflix might look to adapt the Marvel Knight line post Defenders, with 13-episode series for Ghost Rider, Blade, Moon Knight and Punisher.  However, with Ghost Rider now set to appear on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., it looks like those rumors can finally be put to rest.

What storyline do you want to see tackled in Daredevil season 3?  It looks as if The Hand (and possibly Elektra)  will be the primary antagonist for The Defenders series so if Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Daredevil and Jessica Jones prove victorious, Matt will need a new adversary to face in season 3.  Perhaps we'll get a return of The Kingpin?

8. First Luke Cage Trailer

If you weren't excited for Luke Cage before, chances are it quickly jumped up a few spots on your Most Anticipated list following that awesome trailer.   With Cage being bulletproof and virtually indestructible, it will be interesting to see how the gang and criminals of Harlem will pose a serious threat.

In a post panel interview, lead actor Mike Colter stated that the series will explore the fact that Cage uses his real name, doesn't wear a costume and is very visible in his community.  Perhaps  the angle  showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker will take with the series  is one where it's not Cage who's physically harmed but his family, friends and loved ones?

7. First Defenders Teaser Trailer

The Defenders teaser trailer didn't reveal a whole lot but it did inform us that it will likely be Stick who brings Luke Cage, Daredevil, Iron Fist and Jessica Jones together.  Given his involvement, it seems likely that it will be The Hand who poses a threat that brings the four "street-level" superheroes together.  What will be The Hand's connection to Cage, Rand and Jones?  Perhaps it will be revealed that it was The Hand funded the experiments that gave Cage and Jones their powers?   How they will connect to Iron Fist's origin and return to NYC is anyone's guess.

How fitting was the use of Nirvana's "Come As You Are?"  Each character will certainly bring a certain amount of emotional baggage to the team-up.  Will they be able to put their individual agendas aside for the good of the group?  And will they be willing to follow the (presumable) leader, Matt Murdock, someone who certainly has his fair share of personal demons.

6. Flashpoint Details

If you were looking for The Flash to mix things up in season 3 then you'll have your wish granted.  Barry Allen is no longer The Flash, Wally West is the protector of Central City in the Flashpoint timeline. And while he's still a Crime Scene Investigator, Barry's relationship with Joe, Iris, Cisco and Caitlin Snow isn't what it once was now that his mother and father are still alive and happily married.  Is this new timeline really what Barry wanted?

The first teaser trailer raised a ton of questions for the third season of The Flash.  It's been revealed that Dr. Alchemy will be the primary antagonist for this season but we saw appearances from Reverse-Flash and a mysterious black-clad Speedster as well.  And what of rumors that Aquaman aka Arthur Curry will be appearing in the Flashpoint timeline?  As The CW's most watched program, it seems The Flash is pulling out all the stops for what will surely be a wild and intriguing adventure.

5.Legion of Doom Coming To Legends of Tomorrow

Did anyone see this coming?  Not only is the Justice Society of America coming to Legends of Tomorrow, we're also getting the Legion of Doom!  Based on early teases from the executive producers, I was almost certain the villain for season 2 was Per Degaton but it turns out that guess was way off base.  As someone who's first introduction to DC superheroes was watching old reruns of the Suprefriends cartoon, this show just shot up to the top of my list for Most Anticipated superhero TV shows - as long as they have a Dark Vader-shaped base located deep in Slaughter Swamp.

With Legion of Doom members confirmed as Reverse-Flash, Captain Cold, The Dark Archer and Damien Darhk one has to wonder if the Legion has more members?  As it currently stands, they're vastly outnumbered by the heroes aboard the Waverider so perhaps they'll have foot soldiers or low-level villains for henchman?  One things for sure, The CW DCTV universe has no shortage of those.

4. Surtur Confirmed For Thor: Ragnarok

Many Marvel fans assumed Hela would be the primary antagonist of Thor: Ragnarok but it appears the fiery demon king of the Muspelheim will be making his presence felt as well. Indeed, one of the scenes among the sizzle reel shown in Hall H was a shot of a gladiator armor clad Hulk leaping to attack the colossal fire demon.

With the film including Hela, Surtur, Loki, Fenrir, the Grandmaster and perhaps even The Eternals, Thor: Ragnarok has quite the number of interesting characters and storylines to tackle.  Said Kevin Feige on the Taika Waititi directed film, "It's going to be, perhaps, as totally different from the two prior Thor movies as Winter Soldier was from the first Captain America. We want to take it to new places, we've got new characters that will show how big we're swinging on this. And we have a Hulk."

3. Wonder Woman Trailer

WB kicked off the biggest day of SDCC with quite the bang.  The first trailer for Wonder Woman showcased the powerful Amazon Princess in all her majestic glory.  It also confirmed that the film will be utilize the New 52 origin of Wonder Woman where Zeus is her father.  However, interesting enough, there was a shot of  a woman who appeared to have half a face made from clay.  Perhaps Diana has a big sister?

While the first trailer was exciting, we still don't know the identity of the film's "big bad?"  As seen in the trailer, the modern weapons of World War I soldier proved pretty useless against Wonder Woman's strength and magical armaments.  Is it Ares as has been long rumored?  We certainly didn't see any signs of him in the trailer.

2. Brie Larson Is Captain Marvel

After months and months of speculation ,it's finally official - Brie Larson is your Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  Given the timing of the announcement could she be appearing in one of the upcoming Phase Three films?  Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 or (former title) Avengers: Infinity War -  Part 1 would be a great spot for her debut. Sadly, Kevin Feige stated that Danvers will not be appearing in any of the MCU films prior to her debut in her standalone film.  However, that does leave room for her to appear in Avengers: Infinity War - Part 2.

How do you think the MCU will tackle the introduction of Carol Danvers and do you think she'll receive her powers from Mar-Vell?  The Kree have already appeared in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Guardians of the Galaxy, so the groundwork has already been laid.  As one of Earth's most powerful heroes it will be interesting to see just how she factors into the second half of Thanos' ploy to collect the Infinity Stones (that is, if he doesn't already have them by the end of Part 1).

1. The Justice League Trailer

The best trailer revealed at SDCC just might be the first look at Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Cyborg, Aquaman and (a suspiciously absent) Superman assembling to form the Justice League.  It's been a long wait but we're only a little over a year away from seeing DC's mightiest heroes assembled in live-action for the first time on the silver screen.

While we received a first look at six of the Justice League members assembled, what of the seventh?  When Zack Snyder debuted the first look at Jason Momoa's Aquaman, the tagline on the poster read "Unite the Seven."  When exactly will we receive our first look at Green Lantern?  As it currently stands, there are rumors that we'll be seeing several of Earth's lanterns in the Green Lantern Corps. so will they all be joining the JL or will it only be Hal Jordan?

The Justice League footage was great but I personally think that the Flash's suit needs changed because it looks too much like a toy...

@KillEmAll - Okay, WW/Justice League was trending more that day even after the news broke, views on the both trailers beat Dr Strange, which can be attributed to an earlier release, but as well a 5 million view difference is not just a head start

@KillEmAll - Yeah...no. Not even speaking with bias or anything, but the DC news is far out-trending Marvel. I was expecting the Strange trailer to pull away from that, but even Brie Larson is making more rounds than it.

All these lists with the JLA trailer at the top and I'm wondering...really? Are we back to just being appreciative that DC films exist, instead of judging the quality of the product?

@ShellHead - Is it hard to see people getting excited for JL news. Even if the clips were mashed together to give people an idea of the tone JL is heading? It wasn't meant to be a full trailer that will knock your Marvel panties off. Any news of JL will get people excited because it's new.
