Salt Lake City Comic Con

Last Friday, July 25th, the organizers of the Salt Lake Comic Con (saltlakecomiccon.com) received a cease and desist order from the San Diego Comic-Con International asserting that Salt Lake Comic Con cannot use the term "Comic Con" for any event, logo, trademark or website and claiming ownership of all variations of the term "Comic Con."

Salt Lake Comic Con organizers have released a the following response regarding the issue:

On Friday, July 25, 2014 Salt Lake Comic Con (http://saltlakecomiccon.com/) organizers received a cease and desist order from San Diego Comic-Con International asserting that Salt Lake Comic Con cannot use the term “Comic Con” for any event, logo, trademark or website moving forward, further claiming ownership of all variations of the generic term “Comic Con.”

San Diego Comic-Con International is asserting intellectual property infringement for use of the name “Comic Con”, challenging hundreds of comic conventions around the country and the world already using the words comic con for their show.

To view a copy of the cease and desist order or to join Salt Lake Comic Con’s effort to protect Comic Con, click here.

Dan Farr Productions produces the Salt Lake Comic Con events. The next Salt Lake Comic Con is scheduled for September 4-6, 2014 at the Salt Palace Convention Center in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah.

“This cease and desist order is baseless and has been attempted before by this organization and has failed. Our primary concern is our fans and making sure we provide them with an event that allows them to meet, greet and get up close and personal with their favorite celebrities and pop culture icons,” said Dan Farr, Salt Lake Comic Con Founder and Show Producer. “We’re puzzled why Salt Lake Comic Con was apparently singled out amongst the hundreds of Comic Cons around the country and the world. We intend to vigorously defend ourselves from this frivolous action.”

In one year, Salt Lake Comic Con has achieved record setting success. The first Salt Lake Comic Con surpassed more than 72,000 fans. In its second event called Salt Lake Comic Con FanXperience (FanX) attendance exceeded more than 100,000 people making it the third largest Comic Con in the country. For Salt Lake Comic Con 2014 show organizers anticipate an even larger outpouring of fan support with expectations of more than 120,000 fans.

“San Diego Comic-Con International is threatening not only us, but all the other Comic Cons by trying to prohibit them from using the term for their events, “said Bryan Brandenburg, Salt Lake Comic Con Co-Founder and Chief Marketing Officer. “San Diego Comic-Con attempted to trademark ‘Comic Con’ in 1995 and the application failed. Furthermore, precedence for the mark ‘Comic Con’ was set when Denver Comic Con received a trademark for their convention on November 26, 2013. Nobody owns the words ‘Comic Con’ (short for comic convention) and the United States Patent and Trademark Office has already ruled on this.”

@NickNaylor2Face

I don't know what you meant to imply with your capitalism picture, but I don't think this current situation is the result of capitalism. It is the opposite. It is the result of the government preventing a free market from existing. The very nature of trademarks and intellectual property flies in the face capitalism. It is the government giving a monopoly to hand picked individuals in the market place and forcibly stopping anyone else from doing similar things. Personally, I am not against intellectual property (to a certain degree), it is in the U.S. constitution, but it is definitely not capitalism as I know it. I think a more accurate picture would have been this:

The official name for the convention in San Diego is "Comic Con International". So by saying comic con is more of a generic branding to all comic con's. Look at the list of conventions that use the word "comic con" and you see that its more of a d**k move on there part. What gives them the right to coin the words "comic" and "con".....remember when Lucas tryed to sue the government for using the word "Star Wars" and lost.

"When politicians, newspapers, and the public generally use the phrase "comic con" for their convenience, in parody or descriptively to further a communication of their views of the plaintiff has no rights as owner of the mark to prevent this use of "Comic Con". ... Since Jonathan Swift's time, creators of fictional worlds have seen their vocabulary for fantasy appropriated to describe reality. Trademark laws regulate unfair competition, not the parallel development of new dictionary meanings in the everyday give and take of human discourse."

San Diego Comic-con is too big of an event to be held in San Diego. I really want Salt Lake to get all the publicity they can and then the main comic con for nerds and movie lovers will be SLCC. [frick] these corporation type SDCC. [frick]ing blue suits need to shut the [frick] up.

Interesting. Comic Book Classroom Corporation holds the trademark for Denver Comic Con. Mark Schmidt/Stratum Comics holds the trademark for Capital City Comic Con. Comic Con on its own is a dead trademark. San Diego Comic Convention holds the San Diego Comic Con, San Diego Comic Con International, Anaheim Comic-Con, Los Angeles Comic-Con and San Francisco Comic-Con trademarks. Chicago trademarks theirs as Chicago Comicon.

The SLCC has been getting crazy attendance numbers. Last September they sold over 72,000 tickets and in April over 100,000. According to the SLCC website, with those numbers, they're the number 3 con in the country (behind SDCC and NYCC). It's no wonder they're going after Salt lake -- SDCC feels threatened by the new kid in town.

San Diego should consider not using the term Comic-Con. From everything I have read and heard from people, it is less and less a comic con and more of a media con.

Never heard of salt lake comic con before.

It's my new favorite.

I remember when New York comic con was about it.
Chicago comic con was a big big [frick]in deal and "wizard " bought it and changed it to wizard comic con.
Now the "big dog " seems to be San Diego.
[frick] them.
