As We Wait For DCU News Next Month, Here's A Look Back At The DCEU Slate Announced Way Back In 2014

DC Studios boss James Gunn has promised the first DCU projects will be revealed next month, and as we wait for news, we're taking a look back at the 2014 DCEU slate that never fully materialised...

With James Gunn and Peter Safran now calling the shots at the newly formed DC Studios, we're anticipating the first additions to the new DCU slate being revealed next month.

The Suicide Squad director is currently hard at work writing a new Superman movie, while Jason Momoa is expected to swap the Aquaman franchise for a Lobo movie. Beyond that, we can only speculate about what's on the way, though it's recently been reported that Wonder Woman 3 and Black Adam 2 are among the projects not happening.

Despite some controversial decisions in DC Studios' early days, we can't wait to see what Gunn and Safran have planned.

However, this won't be the first DC slate announced by Warner Bros.!

Way back in 2014 - the same year movies like Guardians of the Galaxy and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 were released - the studio announced a total of 10 confirmed projects during a call with investors. It was the most underwhelming way possible to share that news with fans, and Warner Bros. received an appropriate amount of ridicule in response.

Now, with a DCU slate heading our way, what did plans for the DCEU once look like? Surprisingly, most of the movies below did become a reality, though The Flash still hasn't raced into theaters and won't do so until next summer.

Justice League never got its planned sequel from Zack Snyder, while the Cyborg movie also failed to take off after Ray Fisher's frequent clashes with the studio following Joss Whedon's Justice League reshoots. As for Green Lantern, we're still waiting for Hal Jordan to return to the screen, especially after the planned HBO Max series was shelved.

That was set to revolve around Alan Scott and Guy Gardner, though we recently learned the spotlight will shift to John Stewart instead. However, that was pre-DC Studios, so we're guessing Gunn and Safran have a very different idea for the cosmic franchise.

Looking at the DCEU slate below, it's a real shame it never became a reality. Rather than stick to a plan, Warner Bros. started trying to add more movies to the list, with the vast majority coming to nought (Nightwing and Deathstroke, for example). It's also worth noting that the studio promised fans a Man of Steel 2 and The Batman during this event, albeit in vague terms.

Negative reviews for the first couple of DCEU movies saw studio execs change course, with their panic over a couple of "Rotten" scores resulting in the franchise falling apart after Justice League's release. From there, stories became increasingly standalone, and until Black Adam's post-credits scene this October, even Superman was benched for half a decade!

Do you guys wish this slate had become a reality as it was originally mapped out?

Snyder’s vision was dumb. Cavil deserved much better. Glad it’s getting totally rebooted

@ObserverIO - although I'd say doing a Justice League movie so early on is dumb, it did work for the DCAMU in my opinion. Justice League War, despite being the first movie, did a solid job establishing a team

I remember when that slate was originally published. I believe my comment at the time (left on another website I no longer frequent) was something along the lines of “dear future Internet historians: how many of these *actually* come out? ‘Cus I doubt it’s many.” I should start guessing lotto numbers… 😂

@EarlChai - to be fair, it will be most of them. Unfortunately.
