DC Studios Bosses May Have Ruffled Some Feathers With Warner Bros. Execs Following DCU Slate Reveal

Comic book fans have had plenty to say about this week's DCU slate reveal from DC Studios, but comments from James Gunn and Peter Safran reportedly caused some problems behind the scenes at Warner Bros.

Neither James Gunn nor Peter Safran are studio executives, and that was evident from their DCU presentation to journalists earlier this week. Surprisingly candid about some topics (Henry Cavill being ousted as Superman) and toeing the company line on others (Ezra Miller's future as The Flash), it's clear DC Studios will be very different from Marvel Studios.

Fans have had plenty to say about the "Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters" slate reveal, though everyone seems to agree that there was a noticeable lack of fanfare surrounding the slate reveal.

Still, comments from Gunn have made it clear he's very confident in his abilities to lead the DCU into a brighter future. Some of his remarks, however, have ruffled the feathers of MCU fans given his apparent insinuations that he won't be doing things the Marvel Studios way and may actually have a better approach to shared world storytelling.

They're not the only ones with their noses out of joints, though, as The Hollywood Reporter has revealed, "Some of [Gunn and Safran's] comments were not exactly tactful (the 'previous regime' is actually some of the same people who are currently in charge of Warner Bros.!) and there’s been quite a few ruffled feathers, from what we’ve been told."

Oh, dear.

Gunn and Safran certainly don't appear worried about upsetting people, something that's evident from the way A-Lister Dwayne Johnson was dismissed from his role as Black Adam. The actor held a lot of sway at Warner Bros., though it was during this same presentation that Gunn made it clear DC Studios wouldn't accept people going over the heads of others to further their agendas.

Was that a shot at The Rock? We don't know, but the actor made no secret of the fact he went around former DC Films boss Walter Hamada to facilitate Henry Cavill's short-lived Superman return.

As for who else has ruffled feathers at Warner Bros. right now, we don't know. What we can say is that it's definitely going to be interesting to see where Gunn and Safran's unique DC Studios leadership leads...

@Nightmare - Yea, I don't think it matters what these so called execs think anymore. If Gunn and Safran report directly to Zaslav (which is how it should be a la Feige reporting to Iger). Then they have nothing to worry about because I'm pretty sure Zaslav is letting them have a 100% say in what goes.

If that's not the case...well then the DCU is not gonna fare any better than DCEU.

Personally I get the vibe it's all marketing, to try and pretend Gunn is going to change things when in reality his slate sounds pretty much like his own passion projects and nothing else. There's still no structure, majority of it is Suicide Squad + Guardians + Justice League knock-off/spin-off material.

The idea they want to display is that James Gunn is acknowledging the previous stuff sucked and will do better in a desperate attempt to win back the audience they lost with the DCEU - the trouble is that insults any fans of any aspect of the DCEU and that it's written off a lot of films so it's wasted a lot of the audiences time.

@GhostDog - There's still no structure

There is a structure. He already laid it out. We may not like his starter choices but to say he has absolutely no structural plan is untrue & complaining without relevance.

First: We don't know what over-arching story he plans to weave throughout the shows and movies but he stated there will be one.

Second: We still don't have enough details on the individual stories to even claim there are no connections.

What is Superman: Legacy about? Lanterns? The Authority?

If you don't know, then you need to wait before claiming there's no structure.

At some point we need to stop doing this kind of thing and relax. Fans are starting to come across as impossible to please and unreasonable. 🤷

That said, that's is a good poster

Good. Feathers should be ruffled. Those execs [frick]ed up. They should be called out for failing. Bring on Superman, Batman and Lanterns. The rest are meh but those 3 have my attention. That and the second season of Peacemaker.

like I said, I'm not a dc fan but I'm excited for the new dc with new characters !

supes is a nice addition, the cavill movies were Not that good, MoS, BvS and JL were ...

@itzayaboy - Peacemaker is exactly why I'm not as interested in Superman or Batman.

If you really think about it, DC doesn't need to have great Superman or Batman ideas to prioritize their films. These are a given. But if you are going to prioritize a character like Booster Gold (or whatever) it's going to be because you have an amazing idea behind it.

That's what happened with Peacemaker. The idea was so great that it lead the decision making. Those b/c level characters likely have an amazing idea behind them.

You know what would be really nice to see? A Kamandi HBO show. Movie would be nice but I think it’s better to leave the lesser known properties to TV to explore more of it.

More innovation and less imitation is the best way to make the DCU stand out and succeed.

🤡
NinnesMBC
NinnesMBC - 2/5/2023, 2:17 AM
@McMurdo - Everything so far in DC's history of live-action can logically be considered an Elseworlds and tbh it's where everything that is still in production before the DCU was presented, such as many TV projects, should go in order to keep telling it's stories to their audiences. Monopolizing it all is a huge mistake in the way Gunn and Safran want to do it.

The more Elseworlds content there is, the better there'll be a room for more breathing. DCU and Elseworlds productions, films and TVs, can co-exist perfectly.

So true. And one day the Gunn-Verse will also be a tenant. Is that clearer now ?

WB is such a joke. Gunn has always had a reputation of being extremely candid. Was that supposed to change all of a sudden? Did they even read those tweets?
LlamaLord
LlamaLord - 2/4/2023, 5:25 PM
@HAILHYDRA - Yea, who tf wrote this stupid report on THR anyway? An excerpt:

"Other execs either toe the company line, express generic and genial statements, or retweet praise. Gunn jumps in and lets his flag fly. He’s already conducted a fun Twitter poll on whether Superman should have trunks. Will their tenure see them smooth out those rough edges or will the inmates run the asylum?"

Does this clown realize this is exactly the kind of shot in the arm DC needed? Seems like he might be on those execs payroll himself.
