DC Studios Rumored To Be Developing A Project Based On Tom King's STRANGE ADVENTURES Comic Book Run

With the WGA strike at an end, the hope now is that DC Studios' DCU can begin taking shape. According to a new rumour, one idea is to put the focus on Mr. Terrific in an adaptation of Strange Adventures...

The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes couldn't have come at a worse time for DC Studios as work on the "Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters" slate has come to a halt. Writers are able to return to work now, of course, so that bodes well but we're not expecting any casting news for a while yet.

We've previously heard about there potentially being big plans for Edi Gathegi's Mr. Terrific in the DCU after his Superman: Legacy debut, and the moderators on r/DCEULeaks claim an adaptation of Tom King's Strange Adventures is in the works.

It's supposedly in early development, and an adaptation makes sense considering the fact King is part of the writers' room James Gunn has assembled for the DCU.

In the Strange Adventures comic book, writers Tom King and artist Mitch Gerads were joined by artist Evan "Doc" Shaner for a story of blood, war and love.

"Adam Strange is the hero of Rann, a man famous throughout the galaxy for his bravery and honour," reads the synopsis. "After leading his adopted home to victory in a great planetary war, Adam and his wife Alanna retire to Earth, where they are greeted by cheers, awards and parades. But not all is as happy and nice as it seems, as the decisions Adam made during battles on Rann come back to haunt his family and threaten the entire DC Universe."

"From there, his fate rests in the hands of one of his fellow heroes, Mr. Terrific, who must choose between saving Adam or the world."

The critically acclaimed series was essentially an analogy for the Iraq War, with Adam Strange attempting to convince his fellow heroes to get involved with a faraway conflict after he's fooled by bad intelligence and a highly curated view of Rann's history. As a result, the hero is left convinced the invading Pykkts should be crushed.

Tasked with investigating Adam Strange's claims, Mr. Terrific uncovers the truth but a Black man investigating someone perceived as a war hero sends the American public into a frenzy. It's a hard-hitting tale and one that would makr for a great TV series or movie.

Only time will tell whether this project actually takes shape, of course, but stories like this will go a long way in differentiating the DCU from what we see from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Let us know your thoughts on a possible Strange Adventures movie or TV series in the comments section below.

That could be interesting , I can see Gunn using this as the basis for a project given how he is using other specific runs the same way for various movies & shows.

How about Jonathan Groff or Dan Stevens as Adam Strange?

This would be an odd choice. The exact kind of ‘running before you can walk’ mentality that killed the DCEU. This comic worked to an extent because of the history all the main players have over the many years they’ve existed. To randomly do this storyline would be a mistake in my opinion

@CerealKiller1 - That’s the same mentality Gunn’s got though. He’s already made it clear he’s not building his universe up like that, and that’s it’s a pre-established universe full of superheroes. Like Snyder before him, he believes that DC’s pantheon is “iconic” enough to carry a universe without any development. And his universe will fail for the same reasons.

@CerealKiller1 - that’s true but given that the DCU seems to have atleast some established heroes to an extent already , I can see them doing this later in “Chapter 1”.

@PlusUltra - I don’t disagree. But there’s a difference between not needing to have Superman’s origin done for the 100th time and not having any context for the Rann - Thanagar war, Adam Stranges whole history etc. Not saying those things can’t be filled in beforehand and have this movie/show eventually, but to be thinking about it now just seems like a weird choice

@CerealKiller1 - kinda like that failure guardians of the galaxy with a bunch of unknowns and none established.....
CerealKiller1
CerealKiller1 - 10/2/2023, 12:43 PM
@supermanrex - ..huh? That was an origin story in comparison to this story which is set nearly a decade into their established crime fighting history….not really sure what point you were trying to make, but you didn’t make it
supermanrex
supermanrex - 10/2/2023, 2:20 PM
@CerealKiller1 - taking obscure characters i.e. mister terrific and turning them into household names. i.e. everyone knows who rocket racoon is now. he has a proven track record of making it work. weather they have in story established history or its an origin. no one knew who the [frick] peacemaker was unless you were a die hard comic geek even those geeks were like who? now peacemaker is everywhere, [frick]ing character in a mortal kombat game soon.
CerealKiller1
CerealKiller1 - 10/2/2023, 2:51 PM
@supermanrex - ..okay? Didn’t say anything about making characters household names or not. So again, not sure what point you’re trying to make in the context of my comment. Guardians was six years into a universe. And the story being told did not require the history of the characters to be known. Strange Adventures specifically piggybacks off the rich history of every character in the story. So nothing like the example you keep mentioning

Tom King is a terrible writer. Even the subpar later works of Geoff Johns(that was the inspiration of a big chunk of dc films) is better. Would be neat if they would actually look at stuff from the 80s and 90s, and even some stuff from the 70s instead. Most modern comics are really awfull.

OmegaBlack13 - 10/2/2023, 8:41 AM
@Beer85 - Saying they should look at 90s DC books (Flash, some of GL, and Aquaman aside) instead of Tom King books is crazy

@OmegaBlack13 - in my honest opinion , Tom Kings Batman run is absolutely awful. Mister Miracle was honestly just ok, highly [frick]ing overrated. I just read it last month and was thinking “that’s it?” by the end.

Tom King is overrated as [frick]. Like to an insane degree. I really don’t get it. Mister Miracle had something to say about suicide but he made his point in one page , he didn’t need to beat it to death over and over.

Not a fan at all and don’t get the love for him. He’s so overrated. There are tons of 90s comics I’d rather read than Tom Kings work

@RichardGrayson - since the guy keeps getting work that means tons of people love his work and his style. the money must be raking in to going to the same well right? spock said it best.. the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few..or the one.
OmegaBlack13
OmegaBlack13 - 10/3/2023, 12:36 AM
@RichardGrayson - I think if you read Mister Miracle and all you came out with was “he had something to say about suicide on the first page” then you weren’t really trying to engage with the text in a real way, and that’s fine.

@DudeGuy - it's really not spoiling to just talk about what you're planning.

Do you think Gunn spoiled anything by talking about superman legacy?

@Origame - spilling, not spoiling.
Origame
Origame - 10/2/2023, 11:28 AM
@DudeGuy - yeah. Got to agree.

Even on paper the approach to the first "phase" of the dceu wasn't all too bad, considering we already knew batman's origin. Really it set things up for justice league in about the same amount of movies as the mcu set up avengers. And considering we got cyborg's origin as part of bvs and justice league, really all they needed was to include aquaman in there since the Atlantis stuff was still important to justice league.

Granted the execution was bad, but they were saying they "rushed" to catch up with marvel.

I honestly think a big chunk of these movies that WB/Gunn said would be made, wont happen. Like I read "The Authority" 20 years ago and it was pretty cool, but who gives a sh*t these days when they have made movies and shows like "The Watchmen" "The Boys" "Brightburn" etc ?
RichardGrayson
RichardGrayson - 10/2/2023, 9:42 AM
@Beer85 - making the authority is a mistake. Gunn’s slate is [frick]ing weird as hell and so far from what I would like to see. I’m very nervous and think this slate is going to fail. But let’s hope it doesn’t

I really enjoyed the story but IDK about where this would fit in the early days of the DCU. The story jumps to a rather large scale but isn't really served by that scale
