FUNKO POP! Animated Movie In The Works At Warner Bros. From Pixar Artist/Director Teddy Newton

It was probably only a matter of time before a Funko movie was announced given the immense popularity of the POP! vinyl figures, and it's now being reported that an animated film is in the works at WB...

Warner Bros. are partnering with Funko for an animated movie based on the mega-popular line of POP! vinyls.

Deadline reports that Warner Animation Group has enlisted Oscar-nominated Pixar director and designer Teddy Newton (The Incredibles, The Iron Giant) to work on the story alongside Disney Animation director Mark Dindal (The Emperor's New Groove, Chicken Little).

Said Funko CEO Brian Mariotti: “We’re thrilled for this opportunity and are committed to make an amazing Funko movie that stands on its own merit. This isn’t about selling toys or building a brand. The team at Warner Animation Group have a unique vision of what the first film should be and we are extremely excited to take this journey alongside them.”

Funko POP!s are cute collectibles based on the likeness of characters across a multitude of movies, games, comics, cartoons... you name it. From Marvel, DC, and Star Wars to far more obscure properties, if it has a fandom, chances are there's a POP! for it out there.

Of course, this being a WB project we shouldn't expect to see The Avengers or The Millennium Falcon flying around, but the studio did manage to cram a few unexpected surprises into The LEGO Movies, so you never know.

What do you guys make of this news? Are you a Funko fan, or have you never understood what all the fuss was about? Drop us a comment down below.

Well I mean they ran Legos into the ground so I guess they do need something “new”.

So WB spending assets to make a Funko Pop move and we still can't get a real Man of Steel sequel?

@HeavyMetal4Life - Because this is a studio where the CEO is more concerned with banging young actresses than competing with Disney.

If they can make Emojis a movie... then this was bound to happen sooner or later

"This isn't about selling toys"

May be the biggest piece of a crap I've ever heard. Even Pixar knew they'd make bank with Toy Story 4, solely on the merchandise.

This is no different.

@KWilly - There is literally a Forky action figure in my house right now. My 6 year old loves the character for reasons I don't understand lol

@Ha1frican - WB didn't make the Emoji movie, unless by "they" you mean Hollywood in general.

I know I saw something about this a long time ago... I thought it was here. There were storyboards and lists of characters to they were considering having appear... 4 original characters were the leads (a fantasy type, a cartoon type, etc...) and they were navigating an office after closing, Toy Story style.

I remember there being something about a council of Queens, with all sorts of famous queen characters from Game of Thrones, Disney, Aliens, Freddie Mercury, etc...

And while they’re at, why not make it a cinematic universe?

Jeez...
