James Gunn Explains DC Studios' Approach To Casting; "What Matters Most Is The Actor [Is] Easy To Work With"

Part of the DC Studios slate is still expected to be revealed this month, and James Gunn has now shared some very interesting insights into how he and Peter Safran are approaching casting in the DCU...

January is winding down, but a partial DCU slate reveal is still heading our way before the month ends. We don't know what that will look like or how much clarity DC Studios will provide about this shared world's future, but a recent Tweet from co-CEO James Gunn could be very telling.

Following recent comments from Gunn in which he strongly hinted that he'll eventually bring his Guardians of the Galaxy cast into the DCU, one "fan" decided to implore the filmmaker to not use them in future DC Studios projects.

To that, he responded: "We have hundreds of roles to cast. As I’ve always done, some will be brand new faces, some will be actors I’ve worked with before, [and] some will be actors you know who I’ve never worked with. What matters most is the actor fits the role [and] they’re easy to work with."

Gunn saying that "some will be actors you know who I’ve never worked with" has left many fans wondering whether that's a reference to actors who were part of the DCEU. While we've bid farewell to Henry Cavill's Superman, for example, it's possible Gal Gadot could stick around as Wonder Woman.

If so, that will need to be explained somehow! After all, a combination of new and returning actors could prove confusing for regular movies...while also bringing back memories of critically panned releases Warner Bros. would like them to forget!

Regardless, the DC Studio Co-CEO pointing out that the DCU's actors need to be "easy to work with" is very interesting given what we've learned about Dwayne Johnson's actions during his stint as Black Adam. That's a role he's already said goodbye to, but Gunn may well just be talking in general terms here.

With any luck, we'll have that slate reveal to share with you in the next few days...

Gunn's quote: "What matters most is the actor fits the role & they’re easy to work with."

Wilding's title: "What Matters Most Is The Actor Is Easy To Work With"

Pretending that this site's opinion of you doesn't actually get under your skin will only get you so far, Josh. In the meantime, hope you won't mind when your inconsistencies keep getting pointed out.

@DrReedRichards @TheManWithoutFear - just so you know, any word being put between square brackets (like [is] in this case) should tell you enough that the qoute is altered
DrReedRichards
DrReedRichards - 1/22/2023, 7:49 AM
@bkmeijer1 -

I'm aware, but in this case it doesn't justify said alteration.

For example:

Actor: "I had ton of fun working on it, and Quentin is such a close friend!"

Title: "I Had A Ton Of Fun Working On [MOVIE NAME], And [Dierector] Quentin [Tarantino] Is Such A Close Friend!

Brackets are used to clarify details that are often implied. Not to ommit what seems to be about 50% of the statement in this article's instance.

@DrReedRichards - true. If a part is left out three dots are often used.

From ''I had ton of fun working on it, and Quentin is such a close friend!'', to ''I had ton of fun working on ... such a close friend!''.

Guess that doesn't look as good in a title though, but it doesn't really justify it either.

@bkmeijer1 - actually I was more referring to the Paul Rudd quote from the other day.

@TheManWithoutFear - that was a great one too. And not the first time a title completely misses what is said in the quote either.

@DrReedRichards - Well, at least it partially reflects what the person said.

@dagenspear -

Mathematically speaking, 50% can be defined as "partially".

In terms of accuracy, however, it is defined as "straight up bullshit".

@DrReedRichards - I noticed that. Seems like the quote was edited in the title probably to cause a bit of controversy for the comments section for those that don't read the whole article, and for the article just to get clicks.

I'm surprised that Josh hasn't picked up work at The Daily Mail yet.

Hey Quentin Tarantino, please don't work with Samuel L. Jackson ever again!

Hey Speilberg, please don't ever work with John Williams again!

Hey Marty! Stop working with DeNiro and DiCaprio!

Random director's response: "Duh, okay den, random stranger, I won't do dat no more, duhhh".

Lol, such clowns.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 1/22/2023, 7:44 AM
@ObserverIO - yeah, if one of Gunn's reasons is that actors are easy to work with then it only makes sense we're gonna see him work with the same actors again.
