POLL: Do You Think DC Studios' DCU Reboot Plans Actually Make Sense?

POLL: Do You Think DC Studios' DCU Reboot Plans Actually Make Sense?

There's once again a great deal of confusion surrounding Warner Bros. and DC Studios' plans to reboot the DCU, so we want you to chime in and let us know whether you think this approach makes sense...

James Gunn's role in the superhero movie genre has done nothing but produce great results. The Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy (and that Holiday Special) is destined to be remembered as a classic, while The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker are both up there with Wonder Woman as the DCEU's best offerings.

Now, the filmmaker has taken on the role of executive as DC Studios co-CEO alongside Peter Safran. As the creative driving force of the new DCU, it seems fair to say the franchise is in safe hands with the Superman: Legacy director.

Unfortunately, since that exciting "Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters" slate was announced back in January, these reboot plans have become increasingly confusing.

The vast majority of characters will be recast, but a handful are set to return. So, while Superman and Batman will be completely different, Peacemaker and Amanda Waller will not and Wonder Woman...well, we still don't know what's happening there.

The Flash was supposed to "reset" the DCEU, but all it really did was leave Barry Allen stranded in a reality where George Clooney is Batman. Blue Beetle was neither a DCEU nor DCU movie but that iteration of the character is going to be part of the latter franchise. As far as we're aware, there will be no explanation for why the DC Universe is being rebooted and, for regular moviegoers, the risk is this slate will, on the surface, look like more of the same.

That's an issue DC Studios will need to figure out but Gunn's recent attempts to clear up the confusion have only further muddied the waters. On the surface, the DCU keeping certain actors and referencing key moments from the past while telling new stories isn't a hard idea to grasp; however, it's an approach which has still led to a lot of head-scratching.

Hardcore comic book fans might get it, but will your mom or brother be able to decipher the fact that, while the events of Peacemaker took place, the Justice League the title character encountered in the finale is no more?

With all this in mind, we're curious to hear whether you, ComicBookMovie.com's readers, are struggling to figure out what DC Studios is going for here. It's a simple question: do you believe these DCU reboot plans actually make sense?

It's possible we'll learn more down the line, though Creature Commandos and Superman: Legacy don't exactly feel like the place to explain why the DCEU is now the DCU. Perhaps an explanation will never be provided (which wouldn't be the worst thing in the world as we're sick to death of the Multiverse) but this mashup of two franchises still feels like a perplexing way to kick off a supposedly fresh start.

It makes no sense that this poll is in the News section. It should be a feature. Please don’t distract us with this meaningless drivel

Not a lick of sense

People voting 'Yes' must be related to Pinocchio Gunn.

@MaxPaint - Or maybe they aren't as simple as the people voting no like yourself.

@Amaru - Was Blue Beetle the first character in the DCU? Or was Waller? Is Blue Beetle canon? Or not? Canon doesn't start until Creature Commandos right? So Peacemaker season 1 is not canon to Peacemaker season 2? You don't have any definitive answers to any of these questions do you?

And yet you "Understand what they are doing".

@Amaru - Oh trust me, I'm pretty simple, straightforward and don't like lies, that's why the opposite of all this confuses me.

If you’re still confused now. I don’t think you will ever understand the direction. Gunn made it clear that creature Commando and Superman Legacy would kick off the new DC universe. Obviously kept some of the actors because they were “good enough” to have a second shot at the character. Stupid bait article.

@Murderisbadong - I think for me the most confusing part is...WHY kick off this new universe with something obscure like Creature Commandos? 99% of the population has never heard of this property. I know it's a cartoon or whatever and Superman Legacy is technically the FIRST movie in the DCU...well wait, Blue Beetle was...right? Maybe?

@TheFinestSmack - Some of the actors are returning. The previous films aren't canon. It's really very easy to understand.

Just let Matt Reeves cook with his Batverse.

@Smoothcat - He needs to cook up another cowl and lose the collar in the sequel. And Pattison at the very least should consider picking up a weight.

Eh, I don't think it's that complicated. They still vaguely include some of the recent DCEU stuff in their DCU plans, probably for PR reasons. MAYBE the Squad and Peacemaker transition from one franchise to the other, which is kinda whatever imo.

I genuinely don’t get how people think this is so [frick]ing hard to grasp lol he literally just said exactly what’s going on ffs
RedFury
RedFury - 9/28/2023, 4:35 PM
@Asterisk - I feel like they don't want to understand. It's pretty simple what he's saying, but people are playing mental gymnastics because what they want isn't happening. So they kick up a fit to try and destabilize Gunns approach.

It's a common thread with a lot of these people. They'll say that the DCU is going to fail right away, they don't know what's going on and are sooooo confused, then say something like "Gunn said this but then he said this!", and then they'll explain their fan-fic version of how they'd make the new DCU as if they're a proven filmmaker/writer. They'll do this over and over and over again in every comment section that even mentions the DCU.

Oh and I forgot they can also see into the future and make statements using nothing but conjecture to prove their point.

It's both hilarious, and frustrating to watch.

@Asterisk - literal imbeciles

@Asterisk @RedFury @McMurdo - You geniuses wanna fill the rest of us in on how this universe makes sense? There's a lot of questions we need answering and apparently you already know the answers.

So Question 1: Who is the first DCU character?

Is it Viola Davis' Waller? Or is it Xolo Maridiena's Blue Beetle? Or someone else?
Clintthahamster
Clintthahamster - 9/29/2023, 7:01 AM
@ObserverIO - "Who is the first DCU character?"

In what other context has this ever been meaningful? He's rebooting canon, and keeping some of the same actors around. That's it. The first DCU character will be the first character shown onscreen in the first DCU movie, which will either be Legacy or Creature Commandos.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 9/29/2023, 7:13 AM
@ClintThaHamster - So you disagree with James Gunn when he said "I mean the first DCU character, for sure, is Blue Beetle". Or do you think that Blue Beetle will be the first DCU character we see in episode 1 of the Creature Commandos.

I'm sure you have the answer to this.
Clintthahamster
Clintthahamster - 9/29/2023, 7:34 AM
@ObserverIO - My answer is that y'all sure do love to take something someone said off the cuff and act like it's some kind of official proclamation. I truly don't understand why it matters to you who the "first DCU character" is.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 9/29/2023, 7:35 AM
@ClintThaHamster - It doesn't. But unless you can answer that, then you don't truly understand.
Clintthahamster
Clintthahamster - 9/29/2023, 7:37 AM
@ObserverIO - I suppose you are correct. It's less that I fully understand the plan, more that I don't give a shit that I don't, and I look forward to finding out what it is.
