THE DARK KNIGHT TRILOGY And SnyderVerse Producer Charles Roven Seems Uncertain About James Gunn's DCU Plans

There's a lot of confusion surrounding DC Studios' approach to rebooting the DCEU and veteran producer Charles Rovan has now shared some of his own doubts over the way the DCU is currently taking shape.

Charles Roven is one of Hollywood's most prolific producers, though most of you will know him best for his ties to The Dark Knight Trilogy and DC Extended Universe.

Having produced everything from Man of Steel to Zack Snyder's Justice League and The Suicide Squad, it's understandable that he has some thoughts on James Gunn and DC Studios' plans to reboot the DCEU as the DCU. However, does he think it's a good idea?

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter about Oppenheimer, Roven seemed to choose his words carefully. However, he also echoed the concerns many fans have with Gunn's current approach to casting the new DCU.

"Right now, they’re really rebooting everything, and it’s a little bit unclear to me exactly how finite their desire is to use or not use any DCEU actors in the same roles," he admits. "So I’m not really sure, but at the moment, we’re not really having any discussions."

"James and I are good friends. My wife and I are very good friends with him and his wife, Jenn [Holland]. And so we see each other socially, but we’re not really talking about any business."

Following DC Studios' approach to casting has not been easy; while we're getting a new Batman and Superman, Gal Gadot seems adamant she'll return as Wonder Woman (despite that seemingly being "debunked" in recent reports from the trades).

Then, there's the fact Gunn is enlisting many of the actors he worked with in The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker for projects like Waller and Creature Commandos despite recasting two-thirds of the Trinity and characters like Lois Lane and Lex Luthor.

As reboots go, it's proving to be a little muddled, especially after The Flash failed to "reset" things as promised.

With any luck, we'll get some clarification when Superman: Legacy rolls around in 2025. That's expected to fully introduce the new status quo and might better explain DC Studios' approach to launching a new shared world.

To me it would be a mistake to use even one character from the DCEU. This should be a clean slate 100%.

That’s supposed to be the point of this reboot. Start fresh, new actors, new characters, new storyline, etc. Let people get a new perspective and judge the movies as a new beginning.

If he wants to use the same actors for other characters, I guess that’s fine. Aquaman’s actos does fit as lobo as rumored, and there are some other actors that would be great to still have them but on different roles.

Exactly.

Not even 1 actor should return to potray the same character, but they are more than welcome to act as some other character.

Half-ass "reboot".

The whole point of a reboot would be to wipe the slate clean because they [frick]ed up so hard with BvS, Suicide Squad, Justice League, etc.

But since Superman Legacy seems to be making the same mistakes as those films, who [frick]ing cares anymore. Cast a crappy CG Adam West as Batman if you must, the GA are gonna reject it either way.

"But since Superman Legacy seems to be making the same mistakes as those films,"

Lol this movie hasn't even begun filming. Suicide Squad and the theatrical Justice League are some of the worst CBMs of all time. What possibly could they be doing to [frick] the movie up as bad as those?

@regularmovieguy - Exist in a world where super-powered individuals have all had their origins off-screen and show up randomly with little to no explanation.
This is confirmed by Gunn.

So the level of explanation people will get will be similar to these films:

"Batman, there's a new villain in town, he's calling himself Mr. Freeze!"
(Batman & Robin)

"I would advise not getting killed by her. Her sword traps the souls of it's victims."
(Suicide Squad)

"Yes, the Metahuman Thesis! More likely than not, these exceptional beings live among us, the basis of our myths."
(Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice)

"So you were struck by lightning right?"
"That's the abridged version. You?"
"Explosion"
(Justice League)

"Is this thing a dog?"
"A dog?! What kind of a dog do you think it is, mate?"
(The Suicide Squad)

"TDK is The Detachable Kid?!"
(The Suicide Squad)

Lmao... no offense but that's probably that last thing anyone should be worried about.

@ObserverIO - so you think it’s a problem bc of shared universe did the same thing(especially the MCU). Lol

@JoJo1982 - The MCU was the opposite. It took the 'Ab Ovo' approach. They didn't skip any vital story elements up until Phase 4 at least. Only recently, in things like She-Hulk have we seen random superpowered individuals show up with no explanation.

@regularmovieguy - au contraire, it should be the first thing. It's the main reason the DCEU failed to retain an audience.
Quality is not a defining factor in a franchise's success. Hell, some people will tell you that Zack Snyder's trilogy is of a high quality.

It's no coincidence that the only DC films that have been successful recently have not had any random, unexplained concepts in them. They are mostly movies that introduce a character from the ground up such as Man of Steel, Wonder Woman, Aquaman (clearly quality is not a factor if Aquaman was successful), Joker and The Batman.

Lot of uncertainty with this thing. Hearing this from a guy like Roven too

I think keeping Gal Gadot is weird because it confuses things.

Suicide Squad and Peacemaker feel so far removed from the DCEU (outside of a weird cameo at the end of peacemaker) that I don't really think it matters that they stay. People just want to bitch about it because it was Gunn's project and it gives them something to moan about.

So in other words...DC fans are not being toxic (as will become the narrative in the not too distant future), they are just commenting on what they observe and this Hollywood producer is seeing it the exact same way.
