THE LORD OF THE RINGS Director Peter Jackson Reveals Whether He's Actually In Talks To Direct A DC Movie

It would be no bad thing for the DC Films Universe to land a director like Peter Jackson (The Hobbit) but are those rumours about the filmmaker being in talks with Warner Bros. legit? Find out right here.

Things may be looking up for the DC Films Universe with the upcoming release of movies like Aquaman, Shazam!, and Wonder Woman 1984 but there's obviously still a lot of work to do before Warner Bros. is able to rival the success found by Marvel Studios. Someone who could help with that is Peter Jackson, a filmmaker who found success with The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies.

There have been rumours for a quite some time now that Jackson could end up taking the helm of a DC Comics adaptation but are those accurate? Well, he was asked about that during a recent interview and, well, his answer may disappoint you because it turns out that he's not even a fan of comic books!

"That’s not true," he confirmed. "I had no discussions about that. I’m not a fan of comics, I’ve never read any, so I’m not particularly interested in
adapting one for cinema. That’s not true at all." Ouch. That shuts down the rumour once and for all and makes it clear that the filmmaker won't be signing up for a Man of Steel sequel any time soon (which still isn't happening even though Warner Bros. is developing two separate movies revolving around The Joker). Are you disappointed by these remarks?

Why can't you post articles without snarky remarks or taking jabs at DC/WB?

Would it kill you to simply write an unbiased article?

@bigdannymac - Because this seems to be Josh's typical M.O. He hates on anything that isn't Disney.

It would have been interesting to see his take on a comicbook property. Kind of surprised he's never read a comic, maybe his stance will change one day if given a graphic novel to read.

I've never seen a single LOTR movie though .. but I've seen some of his other work and know he'd be an asset to any comic franchise

Weird that he's not a fan of comics but writes fantasy type driven movies

@blitzburgh - Fantasy tales have been around for thousands of years. If you think about it, comics are kind of modern version of the same anyway.

@TheOtherOn - that's why I'm surprised

Good. He should be the one making Warcraft films.

Why would anyone be surprised by this news? I think someone is just throwing out these big director names and rumors to distract from the fact that Warner Brothers is not doing anything to improve its brand and DC film products. There is simply NO OTHER WAY for this franchise to be successful without rebooting. And the fastest and most promising way to reboot is to correct the original sin and build their film universe around the Dark Knight Trilogy and Man of Steel. There has been nothing but flailing around for the past six months. This is pathetic! People need to face the facts that a successful formula was created with the Nolan films and Snyder’s Man of Steel . Instead of doing the logical and intelligent thing like EVERY OTHER STUDIO would do and currently does - going back to the things that made them successful - this studio continues down a path that is almost guaranteed to fail trying to copy Marvel.

@Forthas - The Dark Knight trilogy is dead bury it

@blitzburgh - If it is dead, I guess that will be the last successful DC franchise we will be seeing.

...and Christian Bale led two back to back critically acclaimed billion dollar films ...enough said!

I could see him doing

But part of me is unsure of him because of the Hobbit movies

@dracula - Those weren't passion projects. LOTR was
dracula
dracula - 6/7/2018, 1:22 PM
@TheSoulEater - He still could have made them better. Also its not like he didnt want to do The Hobbit, back in the early development stages of the Lord Of The Rings Trilogy he was planning on doing the Hobbit first then adapt Lord Of The Rings into 2 movies

@dracula - You aren't wrong. They were still atrociously made, just i could see the effort in one, and the lack of it in the other.

Peter Jackson's like "Nah Bro, I don't find comics interesting, I'm just gonna spend nearly 20 years on Middle-Earth shite"
Not gonna lie, kinda hoping he does "Tintin" next, but It's not a great loss for the DC

Almost every director or actor involved in a comic book film has denied being involved at first, so I'd take quotes from them with a pinch of salt, besides he's not being honest in this interview, he has stated on many occasions he likes comic books, he even produced one and is planning to direct another.

Established directors who disparage comic-book related films are a litmus test for me these days. Even people whom I admire, David Cronenberg etc. They're so removed from the medium that they're not even aware that many best-selling, critically acclaimed comics contain NO superheroes, metahumans or crazy costumes. A great story is a great story is a great story - regardless of its source. THEY are the ones who are missing out.

@BillyBatson1000 - he isn’t being condescending.

I love comics, but I totally understand how they could turn someone off

@BloodyBed - Perhaps I'm just picking that up from studio politicking - the way things are cautiously phrased these days to protect careers. And, definitely agree with you on the 2nd part. In the early days, it seemed as if every published comic had an option placed on it - the idea being that the 'product' was already established and less money would need to be spent on advertising. Then the studios realized how difficult they are to translate successfully to screen.

Wait, the title says "Peter Jackson reveals", and there's an actual reveal in the article? Did Josh Wilding truly write this, or did @Nebula ghost for him?

To people taking issue with the accuracy of what he said in regards to him being involved in TinTin and such, there might be some nuance lost in translation as the Source article is entirely in French. I’m not sure if the quote above is his original words, or his words translated to French and then translated again back to English.

Either way, he clearly was shooting down the idea that he was considering doing a DC movie, saying he has plenty of other projects that take up his time.

@Chewtoy - Good point. I don't know about French, but in Japanese there is a distinction between "American manga" and just manga that you would probably translate the former to "comics" and leave the Japanese equivalent untranslated.

And honestly, "comics" is so frequently associated with superheroes that most of the time casual conversation treats them equivalently (and most non-pedants know that). One of my frustrations with my comic-reading brethren is how we've turned what are essentially an outgrowth of children's cartoons printed on the lowest-grade wood pulp into some snooty maze of language to hide our insecurity at being adults who care about blatantly silly things like men in tights.

It's okay to care about silly things, and it's okay if creative people we otherwise like (Tim Burton or Peter Jackson or whoever) don't care about it.
