ZATANNA Movie Writer Emerald Fennell Confirms Project Is Officially "Not Happening"

News broke that Emerald Fennell (Saltburn, Promising Young Woman) had been hired to pen the script for a Zattana movie back in 2021, but with so few updates since and the more recent announcement that the current "DCEU" is being rebooted, it was generally assumed that the project had been shelved.

Now, Fennell has confirmed that the version of the movie she was involved with has indeed fallen by the wayside, although she did manage to complete her "reasonably demented" script.

“No, no, it’s not happening. I loved it [though],” Fennell told the Happy Sad Confused podcast. "This was something I was working on before [Promising Young Woman]. It was when J.J. Abrams had just arrived at Warner Bros. and was going to reboot the Dark Universe, and they were going to make this kind of dark villain universe or sort of hero/villain universe.”

“I thought he was the coolest, and his team at Robot was so cool and interesting and because I love genre of all kinds. I was definitely interested,” she continued. “I was like, ‘I don’t know a huge about the whole superhero genre; it’s not a genre I naturally gravitate towards, so I’d love to know how does one make [a superhero film] like that, for someone like me who doesn’t know so much and wouldn’t necessarily buy a ticket for that first time around. So it was that kinda thing, and Zatanna was a really, really cool character.”

Interestingly, Fennell revealed that the project was actually scrapped before James Gunn and Peter Safran came on board to revamp the franchise.

"I did write it, but it was complicated; you know, the regimes changed; it’s the classic studio stuff. J.J. is incredible, his team is incredible, and I wrote in the end a script that was reasonably demented — in a good way, I think. But in the end, the whole universe got changed. And that’s fine; It was really fun to do in the end. Whether it would have been remotely makeable… that’s the thing, I was only ever slated to write it.”

Zatanna is a character with a lot of potential, so it's a shame things didn't work out. There's a decent chance the magic-wielder will still be introduced in the DCU at some point, however.

Who would you most like to see play Zatanna? Do you have a writer/director in mind if the movie ever does enter development? Woleb nwod tnemmoc a su pord.

Not every character needs a solo film

@Urubrodi - But isn't that why we are getting 4 tv shows and 4 movies a year?

@harryba11zack - I believe one fan artist put it thusly—‘some characters are better served as a ‘spice’ instead of the main dish’. (They were referring to Wolverine in this case.)

@harryba11zack -

Jesus.

Yeah, what the world NEEDS is a reboot of a reboot of a reboot etc.

That, and a team-up film about an eccentric group of outsiders that learn to become a family.

God forbid we get a (remotely) distinct and fun concept.

First DCU L(ish). I mean Gunn is probably saving her for a full on JLD team-up film or to join the Justice League.

@VamP5659 - That and JJ has had this for years, but good work if you can get it. Guess it's going backbin the (mystery) box for now.

"For years"

You mean the era when WB was being sold (again) and they were scaling back most projects?

@LSHF - I'd imagine he did since he did work on them unless the contract stipulates that they have to reach a certain point in development. Certainly seems like a waste of money though.

The deal was three regimes ago.

It's no one's fault but WB for constantly scrapping projects, installing new executives, scrapping more projects and then firing those executives.

Ah, yes, the fabled Zatanna movie, from the days of DC-as-a-Hobby. So glad Zaslav ended the chaos that Hamada unleashed, and that James Gunn is in charge of the DCU. Better days ahead.

@GeneralZod -

James Gunn has been in charge for over a year and;

- Failed to do a hard reboot which has led to such confusion that no one knows what's canon and what's not.
- Failed to get Reeves on board so that we have three different universes (at least) - four if you count remnants of the DCEU.
- Announced fresh projects like a reboot of a reboot of a reboot as well as variations of team-up films in which PLUCKY OUTSIDERS learn to be a family. Fresh.
- Has been caught out perpetually lying to and about talent.
- Called "The Flash" one of the greatest superhero films of all time.
- Hired Andy Muschietti for some "Batman" film prior to the opening weekend of out of some misguided idea that would affect the box office for "The Flash".

Zazlav has been around for years and;
- Royally angered talent all across the industry.
- Had ZERO successes that he can count as his own. "House of the Dragon", "White Lotus", "Barbie" all preceded his reign. Ditto "Joker 2", which will sell itself.
- Called "The Flash" the greatest ever superhero film, defended Ezra Miller and kept pushing back the release date out of some misguided idea that the media would forget about his freak show behavior. They didn't.
- Managed the release of four box off bombs in a row.

So much winning!

Good, although not really news. Pretty much any deals made with JJ Abrams were canceled once James and Peter took the spot. Which means the black superman project wont see the light of day for possibly another 10 years

TheUnworthyThor - 12/21/2023, 11:51 AM
They should still make a Zatanna movie even if not specifically this one. She does have a fandom that has the potential to grow exponentially if DC ever decides to fully push the character.

@TheUnworthyThor -

Yeah!

Let's not get an Oscar-winning filmmaker who was passionate about the character!

Let's hire one of Gunn's hacks to make it a team-up film about an eccentric group of outsiders that learn to become a family!

You can’t come out of the gate with a Zatanna. Great character but not enough gravitas to carry her own movie… at least not yet. With the right actress and performance in a JLD movie, I’d say yes. It could be magical.

I would assume Gunn is not looking at making any missteps. Let’s not throw spaghetti at the wall right away

Loved Saltburn but she’s too interesting a writer to be working in the DCEU. The DCU so far has only enlisted one interesting director, and he’s the CEO of the whole thing, so we’ll see. Hoping the Katanna film rumors were true.

@tmp3 - thoughts on Saltburn's Talented Mr Ripley knockoff comparisons?
tmp3
tmp3 - 12/21/2023, 12:37 PM
@GhostDog - I knew it was inspired by Ripley before I even saw it, so for me it felt more like an homage. I loved how so much of it felt like a commentary on aestheticism; half of what pike says about things just needing to look pretty but have no meaning could have been plucked from an Oscar Wilde quote book lol. The pace, tempo, VISUALS (insanely gorgeous movie) and acting all made up for the somewhat derivative nature of certain elements. Also feel like the response to this film’s nudity felt so puritan - i don’t think all of it was purely to provoke (some of it definitely was), but the unwillingness some people have to even engage with the text for pushing the envelope a bit feels so bizarre. Feels similar to how dismissive some people were to Triangle of Sadness last year because of its envelope-pushing big scene, a movie I would consider the absolute peak of that whole year’s crop of films
