DEADPOOL AND WOLVERINE: One X-MEN 3 Actor Declined Opportunity To Reprise Their Role

It's no secret that there are a lot of cameos lined up for Deadpool and Wolverine (some confirmed, others still rumored), but it sounds like Marvel Studios and director Shawn Levy are planning to bring more characters back from the now defunct X-Men franchise than we realized.

Hugh Jackman will return as Logan (obviously), but the recent trailer revealed that Aaron Stanford would also reprise his role as Pyro, and we've heard that Halle Berry (Storm), James Marsden (Cyclops), Famke Janssen (Jean Grey) and more may also show up.

One actor from a Fox-era movie will not be joining the reunion, however, and not because he wasn't asked!

While speaking to Yahoo! about his role in Netflix's The Gentlemen, Vinnie Jones revealed that Levy reached out to him about potentially suiting-up as the Juggernaut after debuting as the villain in X-Men: The Last Stand, but after chatting about what his role would entail - and what he was being offered - the former professional footballer declined the offer.

"I just got asked to do Deadpool, the new one that's coming out now," Jones said. "I spoke to the director, and I just said, 'It's such a drama putting that suit on, mentally and physically.' It had its mental toll as well, because you're in it, and you can't do anything all day. You can only drink from a straw. So, we couldn't strike a deal for Deadpool, but, I mean, Deadpool is my favorite movie of f*cking all time, more or less. I really wanted to do it, but they didn't have the budget to put me in the suit."

Jones has previously spoken about being cast in the third X-Men movie and how his original role was vastly cut down when Matthew Vaughn stepped away, and he elaborated on his experience working on the project.

"Well, Matthew was the director on that, Matthew Vaughn, and then he bailed on it," Jones explained. "He rang me, and he said, 'Have you signed your contract yet?' I said, 'No, why?' He said, 'I'm not going to do it. They're going to bring a new director on.' So, the new director came on, and it was not the same role as I signed on to do. They diluted the dialogue. It was a bigger role. I've actually come out and said that, you know. The director brought in so many other moving parts... and mine was the [only] one that got diluted, the Juggernaut. It didn't... you know, I lost all interest quite early, because I knew they were just ticking me along, you know what I mean? I was upset. I was very upset, because it was such a [big] movie, such a big stage, and [I] became an extra. That's what happened."

So, Jones' take on Cain Marko won't be putting in an appearance, but that doesn't mean the CGI version of the character we met in Deadpool 2 won't make his presence felt.

Morena Baccarin (Vanessa), Leslie Uggams (Blind Al), Rob Delaney (Peter), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead) And Shioli Kutsuna (Yukio) will all return as their respective characters, and they'll be joined by franchise newcomers Emma Corrin (The Crown) and Matthew Macfadyen (Succession), who will play a TV agent and Cassandra Nova (not confirmed).

A recent synopsis for the movie reads: "After facing some professional setbacks while going through a midlife crisis, Wade Wilson decides to officially retire Deadpool and becomes a used car salesman. But when his friends, family, and the whole world are at stake, Deadpool decides to bring his katanas out of retirement," the synopsis continues. "He recruits an unwilling and wary Wolverine to not only fight for their survival, but ultimately, their legacy."

Shawn Levy directs Deadpool and Wolverine from a script by Ryan Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wells.

The movie is set to open in U.S. & Canadian theaters on July 26, and will be available in IMAX, RealD 3D, Dolby Cinema, 4DX, Cinemark XD and premium screens everywhere.

What’s the point after Reynolds having a superior version in DP2?

Dude wanted more money than it was worth to join what will likely be the highest grossing film of the year. Cool.

@Gmoney84 - yeah , seemed like if they would have given him that then he would have found it worth it to put on the suit…

Oh well , no big loss since it likely would have been more or less akin to his role in Last Stand in terms of screentime.

Thought the one in DP2 was an upgrade anyway, with that being said, it would be cool to see him another role down the line as he's improved as an actor IMO.

Before reading his comments , I was like Vinnie Jones declining a role is odd because the dude does everything he can (he’s in his fair share of VOD/Direct to dvd films) so what could have caused him to turn it down?.

Well it’s that age old rub of money it seems but alas no big deal , could have been a fun cameo but I’ll live lol

Anyway i do enjoy Vinnie Jones in anything I see him in , dude has charisma (might be the accent) and I’m looking forward to the Gentlemen!!.

Wait, so what was the issue again? Was the plan to have him wear the same Juggernaut suit he wore in The Last Stand, give him a different suit, or do mo-cap? If they included him in the script, and he wanted to do it, I don't understand why they couldn't have made it work. Budget be damned.🤣
bobevanz
bobevanz - 3/6/2024, 6:31 PM
The budget is supposedly 250 million before advertising. Let's add 100 million as a minimum. So they need to make 850,000,001 to turn a profit. A billion dollars isn't enough, 2 billion is necessary just to break even haha this isn't sustainable
dancingmonkey08

haha because hes got so many other great roles coming his way...*looks at his career in last 20 years*...I liked him in Eurotrip, Lock Stock & Gone In 60 Seconds and he was a decent Juggernaut (I agree with the consensus that the Deadpool 2 version was FAR better) but he didnt exactly have the career of Jason Statham

@dancingmonkey08 - it's not like the dude ever needed the cash from acting in the first place. He was hired because of who he really is and as a fun cameo. He just happened to be pretty good at it.
valmic
valmic - 3/6/2024, 6:43 PM
That’s dumb. He knows it won’t be a big role why not just get paid and have fun being in a Deadpool movie. We all know they would have cgi’d the muscle on him. If he was an in demand actor I would totally understand, but his reasoning doesn’t sound fully thought through.

I think he just doesn’t want to be made to look like a fool again.

Marvel will figure out how to make the suit more practical and we will have Vinnie in a movie down the road. They did the same to RDJ with each movie being an iteration of comfort added to the suit until he was full CGI.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 3/6/2024, 7:20 PM
@JonC - they probably don’t think it’s worth it unless he has a big role in anything (which is doubtful).
JFerguson
JFerguson - 3/6/2024, 7:20 PM
What he mean? “I’m the juggernaut bitch” was pure cinematic dialogue. For that alone X-men 3 deserves a golden lion
Itwasme
Itwasme - 3/6/2024, 7:40 PM
What made him work so well in other roles is that he's the real life villain and bad guy. Doing a sci-finor fantasy film doesn't really fit with that so he might not feel as comfortable doing those.

This movie will be a big test for the brand.

I am not liking this nostalgia bait and cameo galore. The production looks cheap, typical of a green screen, the volume heavy mcu productions. The only thing i like so far is that the writers are back. The legacy characters are there for bait and most likely will be there for a few minutes. Levy has been known for family friendly films and not R.

Will be interesting to see how it fares.
braunermegda
braunermegda - 3/6/2024, 8:32 PM
@vectorsigma - it's not nostalgia bait, it's simply the best thing to draw people and still be true to the character. If there's a character that could use all these actors again and not make a mess, it's deadpool, primarily because he will make joke if it's a mess. Now, Levy has been doing good movies, and that's all that matters.
vectorsigma
vectorsigma - 3/6/2024, 10:07 PM
@braunermegda - "the best thing to draw people" is practically the bait.

They are trying to mimic the success of nwh without the subtleness in the marketing. I remember the nwh "leaks" close to the film opening and most are still saying they are fake. And i think that subtleness added to the excitement.

Here, the marketing is clear that it will be a cameo heavy film. There might still be surprises but i like the subtle approach from nwh better.

As i said, will be interesting how the audience responds.

Yeah, I could be wrong here (and it's only MY opinion) but I have a feeling that if even half of what we're speculating will happen in "DP&W" actually happens (including the cameos), the vast majority of the CinemaScore surveys for this movie are not going to look like "A- No Vinnie Jones Juggernaut (would have been an A)". Could be wrong there though.
