Marvel Studios' Deadpool and Wolverine is now in theaters, and it looks like the first ever R-rated MCU movie is already set to break a box office record.

According to Deadline, the outrageous superhero comedy took in around $40 million (possibly more) from Thursday night previews, smashing the previous record held by 2018's Deadpool 2. Full weekend estimates are still pending, but some analysts believe the movie could climb as high as $200 million domestic - though most feel between $170M - $180M is more realistic.

Either way, the Merc With a Mouth's MCU debut is off to a great start, and if it proves to be as big an audience-pleaser as predicted, repeat viewings and positive word-of-mouth could very well propel it to $1 billion worldwide by the end of its theatrical run.

UPDATE: It looks like it might even surpass $200 million!

Deadpool and Wolverine currently sits at 80% on Rotten Tomatoes with 247 reviews counted, but it has a near-perfect audience score of 97%.

The MPAA recently gave the movie an official R-rating for: "Strong bloody violence and language throughout, gore, and sexual references."

“Marvel Studios presents their most significant mistake to date - Deadpool & Wolverine," reads the new synopsis. "A listless Wade Wilson toils away in civilian life. His days as the morally flexible mercenary, Deadpool, behind him. When his homeworld faces an existential threat, Wade must reluctantly suit-up again with an even more reluctantlier... reluctanter? Reluctantest? He must convince a reluctant Wolverine to - F*ck. Synopses are so f*cking stupid.”

In addition to Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in the title roles, Deadpool and Wolverine will see Morena Baccarin (Vanessa), Leslie Uggams (Blind Al), Rob Delaney (Peter), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead) And Shioli Kutsuna (Yukio) return as their respective characters, and they'll be joined by franchise newcomers Emma Corrin (The Crown) and Matthew Macfadyen (Succession), who will play a TV agent and Charles Xavier's evil counterpart, Cassandra Nova.

Shawn Levy directs Deadpool and Wolverine from a script by Ryan Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wells.

The movie is set to open in U.S. & Canadian theaters on July 26, and will be available in IMAX, RealD 3D, Dolby Cinema, 4DX, Cinemark XD and premium screens everywhere. Will you be checking out Deadpool and Wolverine opening weekend? Let us know in the comments section.

I think 97% audience score sounds about right. This movie rocked. Going to see it again today in IMAX.

@Jackraow21 - all those people who said they'd wait for the audience score when it was certified fresh a few days ago just shat their pants and whimpered

I had a blast. Was shocked by the 57 on Metacritic. Glad I didn’t see it until I’d got back. I don’t put much stock in Rotten Tomatoes but it’s closer to the mark for me here.

@Cass - RT rating is a 60 or higher and marked fresh, that shit is rigged but I still think metacritic was a little harsh. This movie had one purpose and it worked, coming from someone who has hyper critical since Endgame I'd say they did alright lol

@Cass - I could see why critics wouldn’t like it. The story wasn’t the strongest and the cameos/references won’t mean as much to them. It has a ton of fan service and was a lot of fun, but all the multiverse/variants/time travel stuff doesn’t play as good with critics.

@mountainman - I enjoyed it. It will probably age better that MoM, but I do still predict that once the hype is settled we'll see a few changes in opinions. There's a ton of flaws for sure, especially with the writing and history, but Deadpool has always played loosely with it.

I definitely want to go back and watch it in theatres! Even if it's just those first few minutes!

@UniqNo - To me some of the Wolverine battles were the highlight. The cameos and variants were fun but not quite as exciting as they could have been.

Regarding the story, a lot of us have been saying for a while now that the multiverse isn’t a very compelling storyline. And even in a movie like this that was overall entertaining, the multiverse related plot points were the weakest part (besides the Wolverine variant montage which was great).

@mountainman - without going into spoilers, i havent read any articles or see anything on TV or the interwebs... I'm seeing it in 1hr... but... how does it compare to the great MCU movies. The top of the food chain like Cap TWS, Cap CW, Avengers, Infinity War, Endgame,...? is it as good as all the writers here are saying? or are they blowing it up making it out to be better than it its?
mountainman
mountainman - 7/26/2024, 1:39 PM
@MotherGooseUPus - From a sheer joy of seeing some of the stuff that happens, it is an all time great. But it doesn’t stand up to the real GOATs in the story department.
MotherGooseUPus

@mountainman - Just got home. I really liked it. Cameo, nostalgia, laughs... comic accurate costumes... it had it ALL. I loved all that. It was pure fun and a joy ride... but your right, story wise was wicked weak and doesnt mean a whole lot to the wider MCU besides Deadpool coming into the MCU even though he's from a different Earth than our MCU heroes... but yea... i enjoyed the hell out of it for what it was. The mid credits scene almost had me in tears, not guna lie

mountainman - 7/26/2024, 6:14 PM
@MotherGooseUPus - Yeah the fan service was through the roof. Funniest part to me was the 5’3” Wolverine.
MotherGooseUPus
MotherGooseUPus - 7/26/2024, 7:40 PM
@mountainman - fan service was absurd and i enjoyed it. that was funny... i think i laughed the hardest when he looked at the camera and told Fox, [frick] you im leaving... i also laughed alot at the DC jokes.

Did NOT see Blade, Human Torch and Gambit coming... and Cavill as Wolvie was phenomenal.

Solid popcorn flick. Pure joy. Great MCU movie... ehhhhhh, debatable but i did enjoy it.

mountainman - 7/26/2024, 10:30 PM
@MotherGooseUPus - Yeah it was a great movie. I think most people will forgive some bad parts if the movie is enjoyable. Which this was.

I don’t go to the theaters twice to see a movie very often these days, but I will be for this.

I feel bad for Twisters, as anyone will be going to watch this movie for a few hours of fun instead. This movie better make a billion now.

ObserverIO

@bkmeijer1 - Twisters is overrated. Deadpool & Wolverine really needs to be seen theatrically, with an audience. It's an unmissable event.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 7/26/2024, 12:52 PM
@ObserverIO - I haven't seen Twisters yet or read any review or something, so I don't how it's rated (and thus if it is overrated).

From moment one that movie struck me as the kind of dumb fun I wanna see on the big screen though, so I will soon.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 7/26/2024, 1:06 PM
@bkmeijer1 - Audience score for Twisters is good at 92%, far higher than it was for the first (58%) thus far but early days and didn't have the verified viewer thing when the first was released which has resulted in all films skewing more positive for films in most cases (plus will include user reviews from those who only watched at home on TV).

Critic score is OK and better than for the first but not great being on 75% compared to 66% for the first but it has over double the numder of critic reviews due to RT opening up far more who is included amongst 'critics'.

Dolby Cinema was a blast like always, it was nice to hear people hooting and hollering in a Marvel movie once again. I'm also glad they addressed the elephant in the room, maybe the light bulb finally turned on for Feige

Loved the movie and the credits were...damn, way more emotional than anything that endgame did tbh.

I mean, I grew up with those 'forgotten non canon movies'. They suck yes. But still a big party of what made me fall in love with those characters.
bobevanz
bobevanz - 7/26/2024, 10:15 AM
@BabyLasagna - oh come on lol it was a nice montage but more emotional than the endgame return? [frick] outta here
BabyLasagna
BabyLasagna - 7/26/2024, 10:18 AM
@bobevanz - hey, it made me cry, endgame was just...there.

I feel it had more heart than the funeral scene in Endgame lol

Way more campy and way cheaper? Yes. But it felt more like a closure.

I think it's very personal tho

Montages I can remember.
