Deadpool Co-Creator Rob Liefeld Hints At Issues With Disney Ahead Of DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE's Release

Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld has taken to social media to hint at issues with Disney, going so far as to say, "I didn’t have Warner Bros. treating me better than Disney on my bingo card." Check it out!

Many comic book writers and artists have clashed with Disney and Marvel Studios in recent years, specifically concerning how much they're compensated for their creations appearing in movies and TV shows.

For example, it was back in 2017 that we learned the legendary Jim Starlin had made more money from Anatoli Knyyazev's (KGBeast on the page) blink-and-you'd-miss-it appearance in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice than Thanos, Drax, and Gamora's lead roles in the MCU.

Now, it appears writer and artist Rob Liefeld is having similar issues with the House of Mouse.

"My reps were screamed at today 'We are NOT Fox!' Tell me about it. Also hung up on. More soon," he teased on X yesterday evening. Liefeld later added, "The big corps. seek to intimidate in all manner of ways, the little guys are always tasked with continuing to press forward despite the screaming."

Despite Liefeld remaining frustratingly vague, our biggest hint this might be Deadpool & Wolverine related (beyond his mention of Fox) came when he added, "I didn’t have Warner Bros. treating me better than Disney on my bingo card. But there it is."

That's likely a reference to his recent deal with Warner Bros. to adapt his Avengelyne comic book series.

We're surprised this sort of thing is being negotiated so close to Deadpool & Wolverine's release, but that Disney representative presumably became irate with Liefeld's team wanting him to receive the same level of compensation he got for Deadpool and Deadpool 2. Assuming this is in regards to that franchise, of course.

Captain America writer Ed Brubaker shared his own issues with the studio back in 2021. "It’s ridiculous that like being a co-creator of The Winter Soldier...I should not have to be worried about providing for my wife if I die."

"As the years went on, I started to just think, 'Well, why am I not getting anything for this really?' Like, how can we really get a 'Thanks to' or a credit, but like these movies are making billions and billions of dollars, and it feels like we just kind of got a bad deal."

Shortly after his comments went viral, Marvel Studios supposedly did something to make the situation right. Perhaps Liefeld is hoping for the same?

You don’t own the character, Rob. It’s just business.

@FireandBlood - the problem is these studios would rather keep rounding figures on their profits/budget than pay artists who contributed in the creation of the product thats making them billions. Business is business, but this is pretty cold business. I don't agree with it on principle.

@EgoEgor - Deadpool hasn’t made billions. Maybe after all is said and done , the two Deadpool films netted a combined 200 -250 mil.

What does Liefeld think his contribution is worth? 10k? That seems fair.

@Matchesz - Martin's right again.
If you're gonna buy something and make a movie out of it to capitalize on brand recognition, then please have the basic common sense required to realise why people want to see it in the first place; Because they love the source material. So make THAT. Not something that keeps the name and changes everything else.

@Matchesz - The irony of talking like this...

You want execs at a large studio to act a certain way yet here you are daily, talking like a pure asshole.

Maybe prioritize with yourself what you expect of others.

I LOVE it when companies pay respects to the original creators with credits and monetary compensation.

I HATE it when creators act like they're owed it when they signed a work-for-hire form.

For both the creators and the studios alike I have just one piece of advice on this matter: Don't be dicks.

Creators, don't be entitled little pricks. Studios, don't be greedy fat cats, have some respect for the guys that made this.

@ObserverIO - Dude, of course the creators are owed when their characters and stories are used to make billions of dollars. The comics industry was/is infamously predatory and screwed over of the creators. Artists and writers had no choice but to be work-for hire, because that was the only option available to them. Creators wanting to be paid for the things they created and studios being unwilling to pay them are not morally equivalent things.

I'll repeat it for the cheap seats as often as necessary; Joe Kelly is who made Deadpool popular.

@Reeds2Much - Also unsure how much credit for DP is deserved when it was initialy gonna be a Wolverine Clone and instead started out a rip-off of DC's Deathstroke and were lucky not to have been sued for being such a blatant copy of someone else's IP as DC had done many time previously such as with a far less obvious case with the original Captain Marvel at Fawcett.

I am not saying that there shouldn't be some form of credit given to creators...

...but when it comes to cash that shouldn't be expected when it wasn't an original concept in the first place, was morphed so much into a vastly differing character in other hands and this is a loose adaption not a story straight from the comics and was under work for hire. A company who voluntarily choose to give a cut to creatives deserves praise for doing so but attacking those who don't is always questionable.

I can see both sides on these things but when it is from back in the work for hire days and thus already paid for doing what they were tasked to do...

...what it isn't is anything like if a company takes a book written by an author independantly and adapts it so the GRR Martin line on things doesn't realy hold much water as if he or anyone else sells the rights to his/their books without retaining full creative control than that is on him/them for selling out, lol. This sort of thing isn't exactly new and why Walt created Mickey Mouse as he didn't own the rights to his prior creation Oswald the Lucky Rabbit as that was under work for hire with Universal so made something similar that he DID have full ownership/creative control of.

Just like Mark Millar & Ray Fisher. Instead of handling it professionally. Reaction time on social media.

I give a lot of credit to Gal Gadot on JW's JL. When JW acted out of line, she handled it.

There should be point incentives put in place for creators. This is how we get independent companies like Image Comics, and why we rarely see the ascension of new characters being successfully brought into the fold.

Of course he’s going to ask for more money, have you seen how much a dollar can buy these days, it’s called inflation. If I was him, I would be doing the same thing. The dollar isn’t what it used to be, and he’s letting Disney know that.
