DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE Director On Which Wolverine Variant Was Cut And Why Shooting Cameo Made Henry Cavill Sick

In Deadpool & Wolverine, the Merc with the Mouth goes on the hunt for a Logan Variant who can become Earth-100005's new "Anchor."

Before encountering the Wolverine who takes centre stage in this movie, Wade Wilson gets his ass kicked by the likes of Patch, the Age of Apocalypse Logan, and the Cavillrine. Yes, Justice League star and former Superman Henry Cavill makes his MCU debut as a formidable Wolverine Variant who wastes no time in sending Deadpool packing.

Talking to Happy Sad Confused host Josh Horowitz, director Shawn Levy elaborated on how he and Ryan Reynolds made the cameo a reality (and the inspiration for that tongue-in-cheek shot at Warner Bros. and DC).

"That's another example where Ryan and I are sitting there writing and we literally pass the laptop back and forth between us," the filmmaker said. "I feel like all of that stuff had gone down with DC early on during the writing and we were like, 'We've got to do this. We want to see Cavill as the Cavillrine.' So, another text, another quick yes, boom, he was in."

"[Henry] did enjoy that day, though I remember he was so committed and jacked up...and he had that disgusting cigar in his mouth for hours. He was fully in it. I think he might have gotten sick to his stomach if memory serves," Levy later revealed. "It was a combination of oxygenated muscles and no actual oxygen going up into his nose. He was a trooper and he was fabulous."

That was some major commitment from Cavill and, for many fans, the idea of him playing the MCU's Wolverine when Jackman hangs up the claws for good is already generating excitement.

Whether that happens remains to be seen; however, the British actor managed to prove in just one scene that he'd be a good fit to bring the mutant to life alongside Marvel Studios' X-Men once that team finally debuts.

Levy also revealed that one Wolverine Variant was cut from the montage due to time constraints.

"[There] was an actual wolverine," he confirmed. "We really, really wanted an actual wolverine, the animal. He would maul Deadpool. We came up with that idea too late to do a convincing digital wolverine. That one is in my back pocket should I need one for any sequels."

Deadpool & Wolverine is now playing in theaters.

Wolverines facial hair never looked like a beard missing the mustache and chin.

The actual Wolverine cameo would have been hilarious (especially moreso if he was wearing the costume too lol)…

Him mauling Deadpool reminds me of the rabbit from Monty Python and The Holy Grail so I hope it was like that.

I dunno if i'm the only one who lowkey mentally keeps track of this shit (perhaps cause i'm a fan of Cavill?) but tell me WHY the f*ck does this man ALWAYS have to give 110% in everything he does and in this case, a simple ass cameo???

Everyone who works with him says the same shit, even for The Witcher i remember this bit behind the scenes where he probably wore the costume for HOURS just to make it loose or something, rolled in the mud or some shit to make it look worn out etc, ya know?

Crazy dedication but still...

All those generations of struggle what purpose did they ever achieve, all that effort and what did it ever lead to?

No more Superman.
No more Geralt.
Doubt he will play Wolverine ever again.

@Doomsday8888 - Well, if you never swing the bat, then you will never hit the ball. Maximize your opportunity, Treat every job likes its your first. You never know who's watching. All that jazz. I mean, yeah, crap hasn't worked out for him. But he could have a $hitty work ethic and never have a chance... Better than the work ethic of most people these days. I don't even see service with a smile at a McDonalds anymore.

@campblood - As someone who smokes cigars every week, I'll say they are awesome but not for everyone ;-)
That said, one can definitely get sick if smoking for long periods combined with not hydrating.

Admittedly I missed it was Cavill because I was too focused on trying to place which version of Wolverine it was. After Minirine and Apocarine I don't think I can really be blamed. Thought it was neat when I did find out, though. Definitely wouldn't have expected him. Well, definitely didn't expect him is more accurate, I guess.

I'm going with Claremont's run, by the way. Any other guesses?

If you don’t know how to smoke a cigar or haven’t done it for a long time that would make anyone sick.

Putting an actual Wolverine in would've shown why he's called Wolverine. Wolverine's aren't the size of bears, hence why Wolverine should be a short person.
