DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE Secures Crucial Chinese Release Date - But There Will Likely Be Some Big Cuts

The Hollywood Reporter (and Marvel's Chinese social media accounts) have confirmed that Deadpool & Wolverine will get a day-and-date release in China on July 26.

This thumbs up from Beijing's film regulators marks the first time one of the Merc with the Mouth's movies will premiere in China at the same time as the U.S. and the rest of the world. When it comes to box office takings, this is going to be huge for the Marvel Studios threequel.

The days of superhero movies - or Hollywood fare in general - making hundreds of millions in the Middle Kingdom are largely over. However, this should still help Deadpool & Wolverine make serious bank.

2016's Deadpool was denied a release in China due to its graphic, R-Rated content. As for Deadpool 2, that only arrived in Chinese theaters after it had been reworked into the PG-13 version titled Once Upon a Deadpool

The sequel earned $42 million, the vast majority of the re-release's $51 million haul.

According to the trade, "Disney hasn’t said publicly whether censorship changes will be made to Deadpool & Wolverine as part of a release agreement with China’s Film Bureau. But anyone familiar with both the Deadpool franchise and Chinese regulators’ usual M.O. will know that at least some tweaks can be expected to the movie’s graphic violence and maximally colorful language."

"Sources close to the film say no cuts will be made that alter 'the integrity of the storytelling' or the 'Deadpool spirit.'"

It was recently reported that the movie is eyeing a North American debut of $200 million - $239 million, a potentially record-breaking debut for an R-Rated movie.

Check out two Chinese posters for Deadpool & Wolverine below and stay tuned as we'd bet on a new trailer soon following.

Shawn Levy directs Deadpool & Wolverine, which stars Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, Rob Delaney, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, and Matthew Macfadyen. The movie is written by Ryan Reynolds & Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick & Zeb Wells & Shawn Levy.

The trades have confirmed that Jennifer Garner will reprise her role as Elektra, with Wesley Snipes, James Marsden, Famke Janssen, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Dafne Keen, Channing Tatum, Blake Lively and even singer Taylor Swift among those rumoured to make an appearance.

Kevin Feige, Reynolds, Levy and Lauren Shuler Donner produce with Louis D’Esposito, Wendy Jacobson, Mary McLaglen, Josh McLaglen, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, George Dewey, Simon Kinberg and Jonathon Komack Martin serving as executive producers.

Deadpool & Wolverine arrives in theaters on July 26.

All of Deadpool's homoerotic innuendos will be gone, so, a solid portion of cut content then.

That 200M domestic on first week tracking is crazy and stupid. Even family friendly films cant do that now.

@vectorsigma - It’s not, it’s very accurate. July is the biggest month of the year for blockbusters and it’s the start of the summer holidays. Families, groups, everyone flocks to the cinema. Barbie killed the box office when it opened last July. Oppenheimer and mission impossible stood no chance. Deadpool & wolverine is a well known brand respectively. This movie will have no problem drawing in the numbers. People who go to the movies regularly, who watch superhero content, etc will want to see this. This movie has already grossed a billion. It’s a done deal. You got the Chinese market (easily 500 mil) you got IMAX & 3D showings, plus the movie has great replay value. People will want to see it twice. Im going to watch it three times in IMAX, Dolby and in super screen. Most importantly there’s no competition.
No barbie, no Oppenheimer, no DCU stuff, nothing other than despicable me 3.

@vectorsigma - You're gonna be saying it's crazy and stupid when the movie actually makes that money. When it crosses a billion you'll be saying it's a fake milestone because other movies have already crossed a billion, including the r-rated cbm Joker.

I hope the film actually does make 2 billion because I'm not sure you could find a retort for that. You'd have to shrug and say "Okay, it did pretty well... but it's overrated!" lol

@ObserverIO @TheMetaMan - i dont think this will reach Barbenheimer levels of FOMO.

What i really dont like about the marketing is how they try to mislead people to promote fomo. Highest this, highest that, which most are a stretch.

I have been saying since last year that everything about this movie is inorganic and shows the desperation by the disney bosses for it to succeed.

As for the China release, either this will be cut badly ruining the coherence of the film or they already have a prepared pg version that will be later shown everywhere else - for that extra box office juice. But 500M is still a stretch for me but let's see

Dont get me wrong, i have my 2 tickets ready on july 24th. Im hoping this is a good movie and gets good BO results. But cant they just market this properly and avoid "fooling" people to promote fomo?

And if this gets at least 1B, which i dont think it will, id be happy as well if it is a good movie.

But if it isnt and it gets that milestone due to having the swifties troop the cinemas, have multiple releases with different ratings, or those stretched out milestones to make the mindless folks feel fomo, id be really turned off. I dont like it if it is this inorganic.

@vectorsigma - I mean they want to make money. I think they're guilty as charged in that respect. Every studio wants their movies to make money and they choose the movies that are most likely to succeed to market the most.

@ShellHead - i like good cbms and movies in general.

@ObserverIO - i agree. But this particular style of marketing i dont like.

Barbie for example made money with good marketing with Oppenheimer. I havent seen any "highest this, highest that" milestones. It was a surprise hit and although too preachy for me, still good overall imo.

Every studio wants to make money but my preference is not at the expense of false/misleading (or boundary misleading) marketing. I guess that is why i am not on that industry.

Approx 1 month to go for us to see if these "milestones" will indeed translate to great BO numbers or will blow in their faces.

@vectorsigma - Being against false advertising I get...

...if there is solid statistical evidence of actual advance ticket sales being the highest ever for the franchise and indeed all prior R rated films then it isn't realy false to say so or misleading to predict it will make a lot on OW.

It will make what it makes end of the day but if predictions are being reported in the trades, actual sales numbers released and the tracking figures out there during the advance sales period there is going to be articles about it and be odd not to be when it is coming from a source like Deadline and/or Quorum.
vectorsigma
vectorsigma - 6/17/2024, 11:59 AM
@Apophis71 - my example of this misleading milestone is the "highest 24hr tickets sales in 2024" (or in that vein)

Back when this was new and you google "D&W tracking", this is all you will see in the top suggestions. Goes to show how Disney and their paid shill sites are painting the narrative.

It will earn good money for sure, i just dont like these kinds of stunts.

Like 200M ow domestic for an R rated film in a recently drying universe, in this year of anemic boxoffice and talk of superhero fatigue? Too optimistic imo.

That quorum article is also not explaining any methodology on their "interest" and "awareness" parameters. They just threw the 200m based on ow of nwh and mom. Looks unscientific to me.

But because the number looks good, all shill sites will publish it and these will be top suggestions again and round we go.

@vectorsigma - Even if you have a point the second anyone says something like 'Disney and their paid shill sites' you loose all credibility.

Quorum and Deadline report on all the big films from all studios, can question their methodolgy and all of that but little signs of bias as their accuracy margins tend to be the same regardless which studio they report numbers like these on.

The fact they also do so when projections for Disney films are terrible tends to go against the idea it is anything to do with Disney marketing ploys and being paid by Disney to publish such things.

@Apophis71 - an interesting to look at is the Quorum history of tracking, whether they made a good prediction of a movie tracking 6 weeks out. How consistent are they? Etc.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 6/17/2024, 12:55 PM
As to methodology, fairly easy to find out

Film Tracking

For the first time, pre-release film tracking is available to the general public. Each week, The Quorum surveys 2,000 members of the general public about upcoming films. Each respondent is asked a series of questions about Awareness and Interest in films awaiting release. Given that windows are shrinking, we also ask where each person whether they would prefer to watch the film at home or in a theater (Location) and if they would be willing to pay for it, or if they would only watch if it were available for free (Fee). You can see which films have recently been updated by looking at the poster carousel on the home page.

https://thequorum.com/

Getting to working out how that is likely translate into sales a site will look at the data using the same research method of all other films within the last couple years or more (esp focus on similar genres/franchises etc) and compare the tracking numbers to see if it likely to make more or less then take into account if actual advance ticket sales reflect that as it gets closer to release, all fairly easy math to get ballpark figures from.

@vectorsigma - You are underestimating many factors. Like I said in my previous comment - summer holidays. I’ve worked in a cinema I know how busy it gets in July. Deadpool is a popular franchise with impressive box office stats, wolverine is hugely popular, the MCU is not a dying studio. Disney is the biggest, most profitable studio in the world. If any studio can make a billion dollar movie it’s Disney. MCU have a track record of billion dollar movies under their belt. Deadpool 3 is no exception.

Barbie cleaned house at the theatres last year, a billion dollars. Deadpool will easily match Barbie’s performance. You don’t get it. If Barbie’s audience was largely female, meaning girls went to see it with their girlfriends, boyfriends, dates, families. Deadpool will do the same but for men.
Guys will take their mates, girlfriends, wives, etc. Deadpool is very much a “boys” film but more importantly like spiderman no way home, this movie will have universal appeal.

It’s a well known character within pop culture, however wolverine is the film’s biggest selling point. The most popular X-men character in a movie with the 2nd most popular X-men character that is R-rated and made by Disney? Yeah that’s a successful formula for a billion dollar movie.

Makes sense. People forget Chinese censorship doesn't just mean we can't have openly gay people.

This is the reason squibs have been replaced with digital blood. That way, it can be edited out for that market.

I think it's impossible to know what goes through the average Chinese person's mind when most of them are impoverished and grow up with so little knowledge of the outside world.

But on a happier note, I'm eating lunch at Pei Wei later.

Still never get the fuss over Chinese Box Office for Hollywood studios as they only get 25% of the ticket sold. Especially when you have to spend on marketing there too and the cost of producing a PG-13 version of your movie as well. It looks nice on Worldwide Box Office la-de-da, but really is it worth it.

It’s unreal that some people think showing a gay character on screen has any effect on a straight person. If you’re gay, you were born that way. Nothing wrong with it and it’s not going to “turn me gay” seeing iit on screen.
