DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE: We Finally Know Which Variant Curtis Small Was Playing (And It's Not The CW's Blade)

Deadpool & Wolverine featured a lot of unidentified Variants, and one of them has now been identified (contrary to popular belief, he wasn't The CW's Blade). Check out a new revealed BTS photo here...

Marvel Studios was careful not to give too much away about Deadpool & Wolverine before it arrived in theaters, though we did catch a glimpse of some familiar Variants in the trailers and officially released images.

Well, we thought they were familiar.

While the threequel did bring back plenty of iconic characters from the past, outside of Pyro, Cassandra Nova's army of villains was made up of recognisable characters played by unknown actors. There's a precedent for Variants looking different in the MCU, but for many fans, they'd have preferred to either see the originals or no one at all.

Vinnie Jones' Juggernaut, for example, was replaced by Free Guy's Aaron W Reed, a shame given how pivotal that villain was to the final battle (Jones is thought to have declined an offer to return over money).

Regardless, when an actor was spotted in the background of a scene wearing a black trenchcoat and wielding several weapons, it was widely theorised that it might be Kirk "Sticky Fingaz" Jones, the star of Spike's/The CW's short-lived Blade TV series.

Thanks to a newly surfaced behind-the-scenes photo from Deadpool & Wolverine, we can now confirm that actor Curtis Small was playing a Bullseye Variant. He has the same bullseye scar as the version portrayed by Colin Farrell in 2005's poorly-received Daredevil movie.

He's joined by Danny Ramos, the actor who suited up as Toad in place of X-Men star Ray Park. We've yet to identify the actors who suited up as the likes of Lady Deathstrike and Azazel as they didn't have speaking parts and weren't identified in Deadpool & Wolverine's credits.

In our review Deadpool & Wolverine last month - which you can read by clicking here - we concluded by saying, "A contender for the best superhero movie ever, Deadpool & Wolverine is two hours of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman proving they were born to play these roles and, crucially, be part of the MCU. It’s a f***ing masterpiece."

Shawn Levy directs Deadpool & Wolverine, which stars Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, Rob Delaney, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, Matthew Macfadyen, and Dafne Keen. The movie is written by Ryan Reynolds & Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick & Zeb Wells & Shawn Levy.

Kevin Feige, Reynolds, Levy and Lauren Shuler Donner produce with Louis D’Esposito, Wendy Jacobson, Mary McLaglen, Josh McLaglen, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, George Dewey, Simon Kinberg and Jonathon Komack Martin serving as executive producers.

Deadpool & Wolverine is now playing in theaters.

The mutant variants were disappointing.

@McMurdo - What I hope is that these underwhelming cameos in these last 2 phases are due to they saving the big deals for SW.

@McMurdo - Agreed. The only ones played by the original actors were Sabertooth and Pyro, and neither of them were even that good.

@Fogs - that's a good point. I hope the cameos in that film are more significant and have a role that has threads throughout the entire film rather than existing just for some emotionally vacant fight

@Ryguy88 - and I'm not sure that it makes sense for X23 to be able to slice through his ankles. Is he not supposed to be indestructible ? I could be wrong

@McMurdo - So's adamantium.
Besides big jugs' powers come from magic, so I guess those musta been his achilles tendons that she sliced. His only weakness.

@ObserverIO - Fox Juggernaut was a mutant though, there was no Crimson Gem of Cytterack (sp?) and all that, so it stands to reason that he could be weaker.

@web3d - Good point.

@McMurdo - maybe they were intentionally short-changing him because he was the lame X-3 version.

That Blade show was not on the CW but Spike…

Anyway , makes sense given he’s wearing a similar coat aswell to Colin Farrell’s version from the 2003 film so he’s definitely modeled after that.

While it would have been nice to have gotten the original actors back , the variant concept and no one besides Juggernaut having any speaking lines probably made them think better otherwise which I get.

It was so disgracefully cheap and hollow to not use the proper actors for their respective roles and then have the unmitigated gall to play a touching montage to the Fox universe at the end. Even if you couldn't get those actors, then at least use different characters you could get the actors for. All the secondary roles were cut and paste anyway.

@IronDean2099 - why don’t you try and make a big budget blockbuster movie and see if you will get everything in the film that you planned to have. If it was easy we would all be making these movies. The filmmaking process is incredibly complex it’s not as easy as - “get this actor to play this role, or get those actors to fill in these roles.” Ignorance is bliss.

@MarvelousMarty - a WHOLE LOT of pointless cameos.

Spoiler for anyone who hasn’t seen this yet.

That Deadpool Corps seen was pointless too. They all got back up and didn’t do anything. That part didn’t push the movie forward at all, it was literally pointless.
TheMetaMan
TheMetaMan - 8/4/2024, 3:25 PM
@WruceBayne Its called an action sequence. In action sequences you’ll often find many extras performing choreography and stunts. These extras who serve as disposable characters often don’t have any dialogue or narrative, they are there to push the story forward to it’s inevitable conclusion which is the climax.

The sequence featuring the Deadpool corps was to show off wolverine’s mask. It wasn’t about them it was about Logan donning the mask. Also each act has both main leads fighting different enemies.

The first act wade fights the TVA henchman. 2nd act they fight Cassandra and the exiles and the third act, you guessed it… they fight the Deadpool corpse. You lack a basic understanding of how storytelling and screenwriting works. Cry harder.
WruceBayne
WruceBayne - 8/4/2024, 3:50 PM
@TheMetaMan - wow, you’re really bent out of shape because I said something was pointless about a movie you popped your cherry on.
You literally said that the Deadpool Corps scene was to show off Wolverine’s mask and then you say I don’t know anything about storytelling. You could’ve put Wolverine in his mask at any point in the movie and it wouldn’t have changed anything, INCLUDING THE NARRATIVE OF THE MOVIE.
This is really about to piss you off:
Why didn’t Casandra Nova just end the heroes the same way she did Johnny Storm?
How does Apophis eat everything but the bad guys fortress is shielded by a dead Antmans hands?
How were the good guys all of a sudden able to take on the bad guys with just the addition of two hero’s who aren’t overly powered up?
Why didn’t Cassandra Nova destroy Juggernaut’s helmet if that was the only thing to stop her in the void?
There’s a host of other things that plagued this movie, now tell me how Deadpool & Wolverine was the Moby Dick of storytelling?
