There's a lot of buzz surrounding Deadpool 2 as the release of the sequel draws near and early estimates are pointing to the movie debuting with a whopping $150 million in the US. So, taking that into account, we're definitely getting a third instalment of the franchise, right? Well, while its future is in doubt because of the Fox/Disney deal, that may not be what leads to a sequel not happening.
Instead, Ryan Reynolds has made it clear in a new interview that while he's anxious to see the Merc with the Mouth in X-Force, he doesn't know where exactly the character could go in Deadpool 3.
"I don’t know that there would be a Deadpool 3. I really don’t,” says Reynolds. “I feel like the character, in order for him to function properly within his own universe, you need to take everything away from him. I don’t think that you can keep doing that. I do see him as being a part of X-Force, obviously. I would love to see him in a team-up sort of thing, like a mano a mano or a great female character from the X-Men universe. I just think if you’re going to do another Deadpool solo film, you’ve got to really, like, get that budget down to nothing and just swing for the fences, and break all kinds of weird barriers, and do stuff that no one else can do."
So, if Deadpool 3 does happen, Reynolds clearly wants to go back to basics. The second chapter looks considerably bigger than the first instalment and throws in so many new characters, it might as well be an X-Men movie! Then again, it is having to set the stage for Drew Goddard's X-Force and the actor is confident that when the Merc does return to solo action, it can easily be a more personal tale.
"Why do they all have to be big comic book movies?" he asks. "It could be anything. Deadpool could be a Sundance film." Well, that would certainly take the Sundance jury by surprise, don't you think?
